Written By Unknown on Jumat, 30 November 2012 | 21.44

A statue of late Hindi cinema icon Dev Anand will be unveiled at the Bandra Bandstand Promenade here on the actor's first death anniversary Dec 3.

The statue will join the statues of Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor.

Remembered as Bollywood's evergreen hero, Dev Anand died of cardiac arrest last year in London. He was 88.

His life-size statue in brass will be unveiled by yesteryear actress Waheeda Rahman, who made her debut opposite Dev Anand in the 1956 film "C.I.D.". Together, they featured in seven movies.

Dev Anand started his career in the black-and-white era with 1946 film "Hum Ek Hain", and spent 65 years as an actor and filmmaker in Bollywood. He left an indelible mark in the minds of movie buffs with classics like "Baazi", "Paying Guest", "Guide", "Jewel Thief" and "Hare Rama Hare Krishna".

Lisa and Nargis are new best buddies in B-town

Guess who's on model-turned-actress Lisa Haydon's friend list — fellow model Nargis Fakhri.

Interestingly, the two girls have been bonding on a micro-blogging site. Lisa recently tweeted, "OMG, this is hilarious. Hey Nargis, morning woke up thinking about you and where you are in the world. Hugs and bugs."

Prod Lisa about the message, and she says, "I don't know what Nargis is going to think if I talk about her." The girls have known each other since their days in Australia and later the duo landed a deal for a calendar shoot in India. "She's a great friend and we have lots to talk about," says Lisa, who's busy shooting a film, where she will be seen in de-glam avatar. The role's definitely not the song and dance kind, informs Lisa who has already shot for the film in Paris and Amsterdam.

Does the long wait in B-town wear her out? "Not at all. If you are really passionate about something, you would definitely wait for the best," says Lisa, who was in Bangalore recently. Apparently, it's her older sister Mallika who ends up visiting the city for gigs often. "She really likes it here and she told me how the youth in the city is up to date when it comes to music and fashion," shares Lisa.

Friends, family rally around ailing Manisha

One of the most keenly followed stars in her hey days, Manisha Koirala's bond with the film fraternity may have grown tenuous in recent times, but the news of her sudden illness saw her old friends and family rally around the feisty star.

Manisha, who is recovering from a failed marriage, was admitted to Jaslok Hospital on Wednesday after she fell unconscious. Even as concerned friends and well-wishers kept waiting for an update on her condition, the spokesperson refused to divulge much on the exact nature of her ailment. However, according to sources at the hospital, Koirala is being treated by onco-surgeon Dr Suresh Advani.

"Manisha is responding well to the treatment and she has been referred for a few tests today. Unless we review the results, the exact nature of her illness cannot be known. And commenting about it till then will be mere speculation," said Krishnakant Dasyam, head of marketing and spokesperson for Jaslok hospital.

Dasyam said that Manisha has requested the details of her ailment to be kept confidential. "So, even if the test results arrive, we will have to seek her permission before we can communicate the nature of her ailment to the public," Dasyam added.

The secrecy around her ailment fuelled intense speculation about what is exactly wrong with the 42-year-old actress, who was once the favourite of A-list filmmakers and was one of the first heroines to work with all the three Khans.

Always seen as the quintessential independent woman, her health scare brought her family to her side. "Her brother was at the hospital all day. One of her family members will stay with her all night. She is weak but she is okay. She had four visitors today in her suite, all of them were her immediate family members," said a hospital source.

Manisha's friends are optimistic. "Woh manage kar legi biru," said one of her oldest pals, Jackie Shroff. "She is not a quitter. She has battled so much more in her life that a mere illness won't be able to defeat her." Ram Gopal Varma, one of Manisha's closest colleagues, spoke to TOI twice, just to enquire about her. "I have not been able to communicate with her... I've been getting these text messages about her health that got me very worried," said RGV.

Manisha's neighbour and family friend actor Gulshan Grover said he was with her family in spirit. "She is a strong girl and I hope she will be able to win this battle just as she had won the others," he said.

LiLo arrested for 'punching woman' in nightclub

Lindsay Lohan has been arrested after allegedly punching a blonde psychic at a New York nightclub in the early hours of Thursday morning, in a row over Max George from The Wanted.

The 26-year-old actress was at Avenue in Manhattan's trendy Meatpacking district, where she is believed to have punched Tiffany Eve Mitchell, 28, a blonde psychic card reader from Florida, the Daily Mail reported.

The flame-haired star is said to have a crush on George, 24, and attempted to get backstage to see the hunk after his chart-topping band supported Justin Bieber at Madison Square Garden.

Despite being banned, she met up with the boyband at the celebrity haunt, and the evening descended into chaos as the singer started chatting up another woman - not married Mitchell - riling Lohan, a source close to the band said.

Lohan and a friend joined the popstar and his bandmates Jay McGuiness and Tom Parker at the club.

Apparently a fight broke out near where a riled Lohan, a very drunk George and the Mitchells were partying - and it is not yet clear how it involved The Wanted singer.

Mitchell's husband Wayne Stevens said: "We didn't know it was Lindsay Lohan and it just kind of escalated because someone else had a brawl out in there."

"The bouncer was having a fight with someone else, and I grabbed my wife right next to me and my friends had their wives. Then there were girls behind us and after it was over, one of them went and pushed my wife pretty hard - I don't know why she pushed her.

"About five minutes later she comes round and tells my wife 'I need space' and then she just punched her. After that, the bouncer didn't want to help, nobody wanted to help, and they said 'there's nothing we can do,' so I went and called the police myself," he said.

He said that the bouncer were not throwing her out because she's Lindsay Lohan - "I said 'well my wife got punched by Lindsay Lohan'."

He added: "My wife is still very sore, she's very distressed, her cheekbone is aching. She's all mindboggled right now, I'm going to take her to the doctor."

When asked about the singer, Stevens said: "I could see there was something else going on, but we had nothing to do with it. We were just caught up in something that was nothing to do with us."

Lohan - still clad in her tight green mini-dress and black heels from her night out - left a Manhattan police station with a jacket over her head, while Mitchell, Stevens and a friend were also seen leaving another precinct.

Get well soon Manisha Koirala!

As reports of Manisha Koirala's ill-health filtered in, I pray they are not true. One of the loveliest women I've ever met, Manisha came home once with her boyfriend, a kind considerate cultured man named Cecil. We all could see the love in his eyes for her.

Who won't fall in love with Manisha? She carries a sense of cheerful bonhomie wherever she goes. I've heard stories of her moodiness and temper tantrums. But with me, Manisha is always a doll. A dreamily beautiful woman with a smile that can light up the darkest night.

She has so far been singularly unlucky in love. As an actress she was at one time way ahead of her colleagues and peers, regarded more resplendently than even the dazzling Tabu.

From the time she came to Mumbai from Nepal in 1991, every major filmmaker in Mumbai wanted to work with Manisha. Manisha had no idea how to tell a Mani Ratnam apart from an Indra Kumar. She just picked whatever came her way.

About her early-days in Bollywood Manisha once confided in me, "I was immature. I was so young when I came into the film industry. I had hardly watched a handful of Hindi films in my life. I had no choice but to do what other people said. A lot of people told me playing the role of a growing children's mother in Mani Ratnam's Bombay would be suicidal to my career. I wouldn't name them, but a lot of my colleagues criticized me playing a mother, and that too in a South Indian film, blah blah blah. They were happy doing teenybopper roles. I didn't mind playing 'anything' as long as I had something substantial to do in the plot. Fortunately I got the chance to work with the best directors in the country from Shekhar Kapur and Mansoor Khan to Mani Ratnam and Sanjay Bhansali. I learnt a lot from them."

Her career began to flounder and there were many failed relationships. But Manisha could actually laugh about her mistakes. "Experience is the best teacher. I feel I've evolved as a person. I've never followed the rules. I've made my own rules by trial and error. I'm not Ms Perfect. I do make mistakes. But I'm not ashamed of them.I got major bad-press even back then when I was just starting out. 5 -6 years back I was an outspoken girl. Today my beliefs haven't changed. But I've learnt to keep my mouth shut."

After her dream innings as an actress her career began to fall apart and so do did her personal relationships. If doing the game-show Sawaal Dus Crore Ka was a blunder, so were some of the men in her life. Manisha turned down films with Deepa Mehta, Mira Nair and Shyam Benegal for the flimsiest of reasons.

When stories of her drinking became unbearable, I boldly broached the subject bracing myself for a taste of the infamous Koirala temper. She took the accusation of alcoholism surprisingly well and said, "I do enjoy my drinks. But I'm not an alcoholic. I don't drink everyday. Most of my colleagues drink. Those who claim not to are the ones who probably drink the hardest."

A true realist she could stare unflinchingly at her own mistakes. Once when I lightly chided her about the wrong choices in matters of the heart, Manisha turned around and said, "I don't think I would have been the person that I am if I hadn't been honest. If I had to hide any aspect of my life, I would look back and feel terribly guilty. I want to achieve my goals in life and career without playing lying games. If I have to lie to be successful, then I'd rather not have success. I would rather die than be dishonest about my basic values. Yes, I've had some bad relationships. My family and friends saw it. But I didn't. Even my brother is far cleverer about such things than I am. See, I've to fall before picking myself up. Luckily for me now things are okay."

I haven't seen any woman make such an effort to make her marriage work. In spite of those failed relationships, she genuinely thought her marriage was for keeps because she wanted it to be. "I really want it to work. Pray for me," she had pleaded.

Failed marriage and a floundering career lately gravitated Manisha towards spiritualism. Manisha told me, "All my life I've been a seeker. I've been trying to find inner peace through travel and books. The Oneness course solved all the questions on life and existence. I wanted to focus on other aspects of life. The Oneness course has changed my life completely. I've become so much calmer and more focused."

Manisha also intends to direct a film soon. Two years ago, she went to New York University to learn editing and direction . "I know I have it in me. Some day soon I'll direct a film. But it has to be a natural process. I won't persuade myself to do anything I don't believe in. I never have. I've been approached by some responsible producers. And I just may take the plunge," she confided in me.

This beautiful creature of caprice has many moons to conquer. She must get well soon.

'Manisha Koirala is a beautiful fighter'

Directing a film not easy: Rajat Kapoor

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 29 November 2012 | 21.44

Rajat Kapoor believes it takes a lot of conviction and convincing power to become a successful director.

"It is a difficult task to make a film. It is certainly not an easy job because you have to not only believe in yourself, but convince a hundred other people to believe in you. First get a producer, then cameraman, production designer, star cast... you have to convince everyone and get them to your world," Rajat told IANS.

He is known for helming small budget entertainers like Mithya, Mixed Doubles and Fatso!. But he says while moviemaking is about joint efforts of a lot of people, a director has to string them all together.

"You make a film in collaboration (with lots of people). Unless they don't believe in your vision, you can't make a film. That is one of the reasons why a director's job is difficult. Many of them don't make a film, maybe because they don't believe in themselves," said Rajat.

He will next be seen in Sharat Katariya's unusually titled 10 ml Love, and says as an actor, he completely gave himself into the demands of his director.

Katariya started out as an assistant director to Rajat during the making of Raghu Romeo.

"When I act, I don't think about anything else. As an actor, I submit myself to the director because at that point, I am not making a film. I am just a part of it. The problem arises when an actor thinks that he is bigger than the film," said Rajat, who is overwhelmed how his protege Katariya has directing him for the big screen in 10 ml Love.

10 ml Love, which also features Tisca Chopra, is slated to release Dec 7.

No 'rubbish' roles for Tisca Chopra

Tisca Chopra, who has balanced her acting career with a mix of small budget entertainers as well as commercial films, says the audience will never find her doing any "rubbish" projects.

"There should be a balance of both commercial success and critically acclaimed (films). I want to do commercial, but sensible films. I can assure the you that audience will never find me doing rubbish roles. I will never do things which I can't relate to," Tisca told IANS.

All that she wants to do is something "different" all the time.

"I don't want to repeat myself. I would like to play roles of some great Indian women like Indira Gandhi amd Sarojini Naidu or if there is any role like that of a journalist like Barkha Dutt or an athlete like P.T.Usha, I would be more than happy to do those roles," said the 39-year-old, who has featured in movies like Taare Zameen Par, Firaaq, Mirch and Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji.

Tisca is glad that she is a part of showbiz at a "beautiful time" for Indian actors.

"I am doing a film called Anukur Arora Murder Case. It is an international film. I am doing very women-centric films these days. It is a beautiful time for Indian actors. "

"We have some different looking people like Nawazzuddin Siddiqui, Irrfan and Adir Hussain... people are loving them and loving their performance because they fit their roles," she said.

Tisca is currently busy promoting her next film 10 ml Love. Directed by Sharat Katariya, the movie, releasing Dec 7, also features Rajat Kapoor.

Rekha to play Sharman's Granny

Sharman Joshi, who was last seen in Vidhu Vinod Chopra's film 'Ferrari Ki Sawari', is gearing up for his next project, which also features Bollywood diva Rekha. The actress will play Sharman's grandmother in the movie.

The film, produced and directed by Indra Kumar, is slated to go on the floors in early January. It will be shot in Mumbai and Dubai. The story, a social drama laced with comic elements, revolves around the relationship between Rekha and Sharman. Informs a source, "The actor plays a US-returned guy, who is extremely fond of his naani (Rekha). He stands up for her when she is ill-treated by the family. Randhir Kapoor plays Sharman's grandfather."

We hear Sharman is quite excited about the prospect of working with two veterans — Rekha and Randhir. "I'm looking forward to working with her. She is extremely versatile and one of the finest actresses of Indian cinema," reacted Sharman when we met him in Lucknow on his recent visit, adding, " She is playing my grand mother in the movie and the story revolves around the relationship we both share."

And while talking of relationships, we asked him what his equation with his fatherin-law, the legendary Prem Chopra is like. To which he replied, "Well I share a very friendly relation with him. It is always an honour and a privilege to be with him. He has an absolute shining personality, the way he conducts himself both off and on screen is very inspiring. I don't get to meet him often but there is enough to learn from his experience in the film industry."

Filmmaking is a passion job for me: Karan Johar

He is passionate about his work and believes in the power of cinema, the reason why he mostly manages to hit box office bull's eye, says Karan Johar, the successful director and the man behind Dharma Productions.

"I am a great believer in cinema. I love films. I love the magic of the movies. And I think when you love the movies, you create the movies," Karan told IANS in an exclusive interview.

This is true of everyone who is involved with his production house Dharma Productions, said Karan.

"I think the reason why we do what we do is because all of us in the company are very passionate about cinema. It's not a day job for me; it's a passion job for me. So, when you have both passion and profession walking hand in hand, you can't really go wrong," he said.

Karan's passion was evident in his films "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai", "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham", "Kal Ho Naa Ho", "My Name Is Khan" and " Agneepath". Known for making glamorous and designer family dramas, he feels his films are able to find a perfect match between intelligence and commercial elements.

"It really depends upon the ethos of a filmmaker and what he or she wants to communicate. We produce what we believe in, but it could be of any type and be a part of any genre," he said.

"While we produce a 'Student Of The Year', we have also produced a 'My Name Is Khan', which had its own impact and relevance or a 'Kurbaan', which has some kind of social relevance as part of its plot. So while there is entertainment, there is also relevance and we balance it within the company," he said.

The latest yardstick to measure a film's success in B-town is whether or not it is part of the Rs.100-Rs.200 crore club, but Karan believes a film's success should be measured on the basis of its longevity.

"I think if a film doesn't last in longevity and in people's memories, it is not a film of importance or relevance. Box office numbers are eventually your report card in the business. But I think what's really important is that you must make a film, which is remembered. So, to leave the film behind in the minds of a cinegoer should be every filmmaker's objective," he said.

He is quite chilled out about the latest fad of remakes.

"I am ok with remakes. If you can give your own edge and slant, then why not? I think there is a dearth of writers, but I don't think that's why people make remakes....it's also your sense of creativity and what you want to do with it. Remaking it in exactly the same way is no fun. Revisiting it in a certain way and adjusting it to the modern times always makes it interesting," he said.

Discussing his own experience with "Agneepath", he said it was more of a tribute to his father Yash Johar.

"I wanted to pay a tribute to a film which my father had produced and Mukul (Mukul S. Anand) had directed fantastically. I wanted to make sure that we make it in a different way, which I believe in," he said.

Dispute is between my brother & Salim-Javed: Amit Mehra

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 28 November 2012 | 21.44

Producer Amit Mehra who is remaking his illustrious father Prakash Mehra's 1973 Amitabh Bachchan classic 'Zanjeer' is embroiled in a remake-compensation battle with his own brother Punit Mehra. Punit has apparently gone to court for the compensation amount due to him to relinquish remake rights to Amit. But Amit says he has already submitted the due money in the honourable court and that the dispute is not between the Mehra brothers but between Punit Mehra and Salim-Javed the scriptwriters of the original 'Zanjeer' who have legally staked a claim to compensation for the remake.

Says the harassed Amit, "The money is with the honourable court. Now it's up to the legal procedure to validate who's to get the compensation. Punit or Salim-Javed." On his part Amit is immensely embarrassed by the family dispute coming out into the open. "Among us three brothers only I seem to have inherited our father's passion for cinema. My brothers seem to have no interest in movies. It means every time I want to remake one of my father's films I've to get into a compensation conflict with them.I'm willing to bear the pain as long as our father's legacy is carried forward."

Amit who grew up fascinated by his father's films including Zanjeer is very happy with the results of the remake so far. "We've shot some exceptional sequences between Ramcharan Teja and Priyanka Chopra in Hyderabad. Now we move to Mumbai for action sequences between Mr Sanjay Dutt and Ramcharan Teja. I think Papa would have been proud of what we've done."

Akshay Kumar’s costume fetish

Many of our stars are known for their quirks and Akshay Kumar is no exception.

Recently, the actor demonstrated his unique style of dubbing during the filming of Khiladi 786. At the dubbing studio, he opted to wear the same kurta and denims that he had worn during the film's shooting.

He believes the uniformity of dress helps him get back into the character, given the gap between shooting and dubbing.

Add to it the fact he is usually working in multiple films, hopping from one studio to the other.

Incidentally, Akshay's costume in the film has been designed by director Ashish R Mohan's wife.

Abdul Hakim's murder saddens Aamir Khan

Aamir Khan is saddened by the murder of labourer Abdul Hakim, who spoke against khap panchayats on the superstar's show " Satyamev Jayate" earlier this year.

Hakim's wife Mahvish Monday alleged that her family was behind the murder of her husband, who was killed late Saturday in Bulandshahr. Hakim had married Mahvish despite resistance from their families.

Mahvish claimed that ever since the couple married in court two years ago, their families had been baying for the couple's blood. The couple had appeared Aamir's show "Satyamev Jayate" and spoke against "honour killings".

"I felt really sad when I got to know that Abdul has been attacked and killed. My whole team (of 'Satyamev Jayate') is feeling sad about it. Though their story was not shown in detail on our show, we had seen the fear that they lived with," Aamir told.

He said he has talked to police about the safety of Abdul's wife and daughter and that they have assured strict action against the culprits.

"I have met the SP of Meerut. When I went to Lucknow, I had a talk with their DIG. Both have assured me that strict action will be taken against people who are responsible for it," he added.

Vidya Balan opts for a homely wedding

The actress will marry Siddharth Roy Kapur at the latter's parental home in Cuffe Parade away from the fraternity's prying eyes

The actress who has always acknowledged her traditional roots, will remain loyal to them for her big day as well. TOI can now reveal: Vidya Balan will marry Siddharth Roy Kapur at a small, traditional ceremony on December 14 in the presence of family and only the closest friends.

The one-day affair will take place, not at any five-star destination, but at the sprawling Cuffe Parade apartment in Jolly Maker Towers, which belongs to SRK's parents. For the uninitiated, SRK is Vidya's affectionate moniker for the UTV honcho.

Like everything she does, there is a little story behind the wedding date as well. And this was revealed by one of Vidya's closest friends. "Vidya's sister Priya also got married on December 14. The close-knit family considers this date to be extremely auspicious," said the friend, adding, "From next year, this date will bring twice the happiness for the Balan family. Priya especially is on cloud nine."

Coming back to the venue of the wedding, we asked the friend why couple gave Siddharth's Bandra current a miss. After all, the Bandra pad is more accessible for their guests.

"The Jolly Maker apartment is much bigger. Besides the Bandra apartment is a rented one. And Siddharth is not sure if he wants to continue with it," said the friend.

As TOI had reported, Vidya's trousseau has been designed by Sabyasachi and she plans to wear sarees for the special day. The couple intend to take off on a Caribbean Cruise two days after the wedding.

This is the same cruise plan, which was earlier meant to be a family affair. Once back, the newly weds will walk straight into their Rs 14-crore Juhu apartment which Siddharth had bought last year.

As we had reported earlier, this was a gift for his fiancee. The house has already received his special, feminine touches thanks to the actress, who has been shopping for accessories and highlights for a while now.

The actress is busy wrapping up her Ghanchakkar schedule with Emraan Hashmi. She goes off on her wedding break in a couple of days.

Vidya shoots for maiden overs
November 27 was Vidya's penultimate day of shoot before she ties the knot. We spotted her a few minutes before the clock struck midnight on Sunday at Goregaon Station, shooting for Rajkumar Gupta's next Ghanchakkar, all aglow with pre-nuptial happiness.

Vidya was getting ready for a confrontation scene with her on-screen hubby Emraan Hashmi, who said he was feeling a tad nervous about the scuffle with a passenger that was supposed to follow.

A crowd had gathered to watch the shoot, which kicked off at 12.15am. We bet Vidya couldn't wait to reach home to be with her parents and indulge in all that remains to be done for her wedding preparations.

Karan's passion was evident in his films "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai", "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham", "Kal Ho Naa Ho", "My Name Is Khan" and "Agneepath".

Huma gives me acting tips: says brother Saqib

Saqib Saleem, 24, who is gearing up for his next release 'Mere Dad Ki Maruti', says his two-films-old sister gives him acting tips.

"Huma has made her mark in the industry with films like 'Gangs of Wasseypur' and 'Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana'. I am happy for what she has achieved today because we belong to a non-film background.

"In the industry also she is my senior. Whenever we are free from our shoots we discuss work. We stay together in Mumbai and are always ready to help each other," said Saqib .

For Delhi-born Saqib, choosing this profession was not a cakewalk as his restaurateur father wanted him to pursue a MBA degree.

"While I was in college, I was intrigued by modelling and also won the best model award in my college. I started getting modelling assignments and that's how I became interested in acting. But my father, who last watched Dilip Kumar's 'Devdas', wanted me to do MBA. I didn't listen to him and gave my audition for Yash Raj films' 'Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge' and got selected for it," he said.

As part of Yash Raj's three-film contract, Saqib will be seen next in debutante director Ashima Chibber's comedy 'Mere Dad Ki Maruti'. The film's trailer was released with 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan'.

Set in Chandigarh, the film is a quirky tale of a boy, who loses his father's car.

"The film is about a son whose father thinks he is good for nothing. I am playing the son's character, Sameer, in the film. It's a comedy flick and it was difficult to achieve the comic timing. We all attended workshops with Ashima (director) to preparing for our characters," he said.

The film stars TV actor Ram Kapoor as the strict father on-screen. But Saqib says off-screen he helped him learn his character better.

"He is phenomenal. As I am new, he was very helpful. He appreciated me when I did something correctly and always guided me when I did something wrong. He was like a father figure for me on the sets," he added.

Will Kareena's 'Fevicol' pip Malaika's 'Munni'?

Will 'Dabangg 2's most-awaited item number 'Mere photo ko seene se yaar chipka le saiyan Fevicol se' pip Akshay's 'Balma', down the charts and outrun last year's Malaika Arora Khan's sensational 'Munni Badnaam Hui'. The raunchy item number, picturized on Chulbul Pandey is sung by Sufi singer Shadab Faridi along with Wajid Ali and Mamta Sharma.

After Malaika's Munni stint, it is time for the much-married Kareena Kapoor to flash her curves and make hearts race with her voluptuous look. According to sources, Bebo will be seen flaunting a sexy choli and a gorgeous ghagra with her latkas and jhatkas in this song. " Fevicol se is a very interesting song of the movie which is beautifully picturised on Kareena. As a singer I feel very lucky that I got a chance to be a part of Salman Khan film. As a Sufi singer it's great to be work with Bollywood Khans," says the singer. This will be Kareena's first item number post her spectacular wedding early in October. The spouses went back to work after a brief honeymoon. And marriage still hasn't affected her numero uno status in the industry, despite rumours that a wedding could affect her career. Wonder what Sona has to say about that.

'Talaash' one of most sensitive performances: Kareena

Kareena Kapoor played a sex worker in "Chameli" and does so again for " Talaash", a role she describes as amongst her most sensitive and powerful.

"I play a prostitute, who is kind of an escort. It's a very deep character. I have hopefully achieved a sensitive performance. It's by far one of my most sensitive performances, I believe," Kareena told IANS ahead of the release of "Talaash" this Friday.

Her role in "Chameli" cannot be compared with what she has portrayed in "Talaash", says Kareena, who will be seen sharing the screen with Aamir Khan and Rani Mukerji in the thriller.

" 'Chameli' was totally different. It was very raw. The lingo and the language, body language and the outfit - everything was different. Here from head to toe, the performance, and everything is different," she said, adding that she signed on the dotted line for "Talaash" because it allowed her to work with Aamir again.

"I don't look at the project with commercial aspect. I wanted to work with Reema (Kagti) and wanted to work with Aamir again. I loved the role that was offered to me. This is one of the most powerful roles that I have done," she said.

"Reema comes across as a very strong director and a strong personality, but when you get to know her, she is a very sensitive girl and that is what she has brought about in her actors and in her film," Kareena said about her director.

My personal life consists of a beautiful girl: Sahil

The actor gets candid on his mantra to living well, says it also includes doing the things he loves, not taking work home and making time for sports.

To many people the good life means different things. To model and actor Sahil Shroff, it has a definite meaning. "The good life for me is the ability to strike a balance and make time for everything that matters to me. My family being most important, I have a get together every few weeks and we forget about our personal lives and enjoy being a part of something of course, along with lots of tasty food," he laughs.

"My personal life consists of a beautiful girl, both internally and externally, who enjoys being with me for who I am and vice versa. Catching up with friends every week is a must as it removes the seriousness that is sometimes a part of life. With good friends around its okay to be a fool, be emotional, laugh a lot it's okay to be anything with out being judged for example, doing crazy stuff.

Work - I love the work I do, it gives me a great feeling like nothing else has. Being able to do it almost everyday would be and is a blessing in disguise to create the balance." He has a recommendation. "Remember this 'don't take your work home'! And as for personal space - one hour a day every morning with myself for self-growth and meditation and one hour every evening for soccer, cricket, gym, running, or anything physical. This personal time assists me in taking on anything life has to offer," he ends.

Nobody has pointed out a flaw in my acting: Rani

Written By Unknown on Senin, 26 November 2012 | 21.44

Candid Rani Mukerji has confessed she has a soft corner for all three Khans of Bollywood-Salman, Shah Rukh and Aamir- with whom she worked at an impressionable age.

"I have a soft corner for Salman, Shah Rukh and Aamir because at an impressionable age, I worked with them. I was 17-18. At that age, you look up to some people and that always remains irrespective of whatever happens," the actress told IANS in a group interview.

"Your comfort level with them is such that you can't compare it with any other co-star. The kind of love and support they showed towards me when I was a newcomer will stay with me for life," said the 34-year-old who acted with Shah Rukh Khan in "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" and "Paheli".

With Salman, she featured in "Chori Chori" and "Baabul".

She worked with Aamir in "Ghulam" and "Mangal Pandey" and will now be seen with him in " Talaash" releasing Nov 30.

"I always treated myself as a youngster or as a learner in front of two people - Aamir and Shah Rukh- as I started my career with them. So I do look up to them in a different way. I may not be shy in front of them any more, but I learn a lot from them. When they suggest anything to me, it's important for me to take their suggestion," she said.

"Talaash" is her second release this year after Anurag Kashyap's "Aiyyaa", which failed to impress her fans.

"I would not want to be a part of any project that I feel would not work. An actor like me always wants to work to get appreciation of the audiences. And appreciation can only come if people will come to watch the film.

"In 'Aiyyaa', probably people didn't come. It is a very sad situation for me. We actors always crave for adulation," she said.

Moving on is the best way to tackle failure and success in life, she said.

"I don't really get stuck in a time warp where if my film is a success, I have to keep partying till the next one releases or if my film is a flop, I keep wallowing in sorrow until the next comes my way.

"My hard work in each film is always there. Till date, nobody has pointed out a flaw in my acting. At least they say Rani's film didn't work, but she was fabulous. I work towards maintaining that," she said.

A film's box office performance cannot be predicted, she said.

"We are not saints, gods, spiritual human beings that we can sit and decide whether a film will do well or not. It is not in our hands," she said and added that nothing was frustrating.

"You are a worker. How can your work give you frustration? From childhood, we're taught that there will be good days; there will be bad days; you will win some and lose some. But because of that you don't become negative, frustrated and depressed," she said.

Variety is important for Rani and she makes sure each assignment adds something to her body of work.

"It could get saturated or monotonous if I would do the same characters again and again. That is why to save myself from that feeling, I take time out to choose roles that excite me," she said.

For variety, Rani has collaborated with new directors Rajkumar Gupta and Sachin Kundalkar in "No One Killed Jessica" and "Aiyyaa".

She says working with seasoned directors and with new ones have their own advantages and disadvantages.

"With experienced directors, you gain experience and with new ones, you get energy and spirit," she said.

Acting tough, but enjoyable: Saqib Saleem

Saqib Saleem started as a model and turned to acting with "Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge". He agrees that modelling is an easier job but says he enjoys facing the camera for movies more.

The 24-year-old made his Bollywood debut in 2011 and says the variety of different characters that one can play is what excites him most about acting.

"When I was a model, I used to enjoy it. But now, I feel acting has given me so much to do... there is so much more to perform. As an actor, I get to do so many characters in various films. It is, of course, tougher but much more enjoyable," Saqib told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

He did TV commercials for brands like Pepsi, KFC, Tata Docomo and Bar One before he stepped into filmdom through Yash Raj Films. Saqib says it was his visibility in these advertisements that helped him get noticed.

"The ads I did helped people to start noticing me and I got calls for audition. To audition with big production houses, you have to have a good background with commercials. I think I got noticed through television," he said.

Asked if he has any dream role in mind, the actor said: "If a script comes to me, I read it and I see what I can do to it. Everybody does a role differently and I give my touch to each role. I can't say that something is my dream role."

Saqib is now ready with his second movie - debutante director Ashima Chibber's " Mere Dad Ki Maruti". The movie surrounds the life of a Chandigarh-based Punjabi family. Saqib plays Raj, who loses his father's (Ram Kapoor) car.

The promo of the movie looks fun and it seems the movie is loaded with great comedy.

Saqib says a good equation with the director and preparation helped him for "Mere Dad Ki Maruti".

"I just feel that if you and your director are on the same page, then things become a lot easier. The other actors of the film had a lot of extensive readings. So, once we started shooting, everything got into pace. I did not feel any pressure," Saqib said.

The young actor is all praise for his on-screen father Ram Kapoor, who is a celebrated name on Indian television.

"I think he is just phenomenal. Of course, he played my father in the film but off sets I had a great time. We had a pretty good time shooting (together). He is very supportive.

"I am new and he was very helpful with how I should be facing the cameras and how I should be in front of the light. When I did something correctly, he appreciated it. So it feels great that an actor like Ram Kapoor liked my work," Saqib said.

Rolling Stones rock London in 50-year show

The Rolling Stones rocked London on Sunday, thrilling a 20,000 crowd with the first of five concerts to mark their 50th anniversary.

Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood were joined by their original bass player Bill Wyman at the O2 Arena as the ageing rockers performed their first major concert for five years.

Lead singer Jagger made light of criticism of the ticket prices for the sold-out gig -- fans had paid up to £406 ($650, 500 euros) for a standard seat, and thousands of pounds more on ticket re-selling sites.

"How're you doing in the cheap seats? They're not that cheap though, that's the problem," Jagger joked as the concert began.

The band opened with "I Want to be Your Man", with 69-year-old Jagger strutting around the giant stage dressed in a silver jacket and trilby, before launching into "Get Off of My Cloud".

US soul diva Mary J Blige joined Jagger to sing the female lines of "Gimme Shelter" and legendary rock guitarist Jeff Beck added a flourish to "I'm Going Down".

The Stones welcomed on stage another former member, guitarist Mick Taylor, to play on "Midnight Gambler".

Jagger donned a black feathered cape to perform "Sympathy For The Devil" while a demonic red light was trained on him, before a rousing rendition of "Jumping Jack Flash" ended the night.

The Daily Telegraph's music critic Neil McCormick said the Stones rose to the occasion, laying claim to the title of the world's greatest band "with some style and panache".

Noting that one of the encores was "You Can't Always Get What You Want", McCormick wrote: "Well, maybe sometimes, for the right ticket price, you actually can."

Tickets for Sunday's gig and the second London concert on Thursday were snapped up in seven minutes last month.

But the Telegraph said that just hours before the show began scores of tickets remained unsold on re-selling websites after standard tickets were inflated to £1,300.

The London shows are the first part of the "50 And Counting" performances to mark the Stones' half century in the music business, with a concert in New York and two in Newark, New Jersey to follow next month.

Diehard fans said they had broken the bank to snap up tickets because it might be the last chance to the see their heroes in action.

Jill Roberts, a 52-year-old housewife from England, said as she entered the O2: "It's hard to justify that kind of money but a lot of people were prepared to pay it.

"It's an awful lot of money but I guess it's just a one-time thing. I don't think I'll be coming again anyway."

She first saw the Stones play eight years ago. "I want to experience it again, because they are such good musicians," she said.

The band have been rehearsing in Paris, where they played a concert for just 350 people at a small club on October 26, although tickets for that surprise gig were priced at just 15 euros (£20).

US music magazine Billboard reported in August that the Stones would earn a total of $25 million for the four shows -- and that was before the extra date in New York's Barclays Center on December 8 was added to the itinerary.

Elton John dedicates Beijing show to Ai Weiwei

Pop-rock balladeer Elton John dedicated his Beijing show to Chinese dissident Ai Weiwei -- a controversial move the artist said Monday was unlikely to make the nation's cultural minders happy.

After the Icelandic singer Bjork chanted "Tibet, Tibet" at a 2008 concert in Shanghai, authorities refused numerous Western acts permits to perform in China for years.

Concert-goers said John told his audience of more than 12,000 people on Sunday at the Wukesong arena, built to host the basketball tournament at the Beijing Olympics, that the show was dedicated to Ai.

"I met him before the show, he didn't say anything about it," Ai told AFP.

"When he did it, it was a big surprise."

The Ministry of Culture, he added, "are probably not too happy about this, but there is not much that they can do about it. He is a very popular singer who has a lot of influence".

Ai, 55, is a world-renowned conceptual artist and outspoken critic of China's communist government.

He disappeared into police custody for 81 days last year, drawing worldwide headlines and casting a spotlight on the government's growing concern over social unrest, especially as "Arab spring" street protests rocked the Middle East.

After being released he was convicted of tax evasion, fined $2.4 million by the Beijing tax bureau and barred from leaving the country for one year.

He has described such treatment as the government's way of quelling his social activism and efforts to protest a wide range of alleged official abuse.

It was unclear whether John's public support for Ai would have consequences for other Western acts hoping to perform in China.

At a 2008 concert in Shanghai, Bjork chanted "Tibet, Tibet" at the end of her song "Declare Independence", in a public protest against China's rule of the Himalayan region and open support for the Tibet independence movement.

A number of Western acts were subsequently refused permits to perform in the country by China's cultural minders.

In Sunday's show, John's surprise dedication drew only a muted response from the crowd, said one audience member surnamed Wu, adding: "As far as the show, the crowd loved every minute of it."

John is scheduled to return to China next week to play a concert in Guangzhou following shows in South Korea, Malaysia and Hong Kong.

Would love to be Aamir, but have long way to go: Rani

Rani Mukerji, Bollywood's talented actress, has clear goals. She loves to be selective and admires to be in the hearts of her fans. The actress tells TOI about her approach towards films, her camaraderie with Mr. Perfectionist of Bollywood, her upcoming film Talaash and her wish list of directors.

Rani dressed in an abstract print outfit with her smoky eyes carried her broad smile, quite effectively. The actress seemed at her comfortable best while she sipped the hot green tea and started indulging into a conversation. No One Killed Jessica, Aiyyaa and now Talaash, the journey for Rani in last three years seems to be slow, but steady. "One movie a year is not really a conscious decision, but one film at a time is definitely, yes. When I am shooting for a particular film, I would like to shoot for that one and once I finish it, I start work on my next project," said Rani calmly.

While many of her fans call her the lady Aamir Khan of Bollywood, Rani too confesses to be inspired by the Mr. Perfectionist. "Yes, lot of times I do get to hear that and I would be honored if they actually mean it. I do admire Aamir a lot as an actor and as a person he is. It's great when people believe in me, but I have a long way to go as Aamir is 15 years senior to me in profession and also in age (chuckled Rani). He conducted his professional life so well," expressed Rani being well aware of the tag.

One film old Rani, was star struck with Aamir's presence on the sets of Ghulam, how has the equation changed with passing years, we asked curiously. "For me I always treat Aamir as someone from whom I learn and look up to. The comfort level is different because we have developed friendship over years. It's very different when you are friends with somebody. In Ghulam I was in awe of Aamir in front of me, but during Talaash I used to think Oh my god, this is Aamir, the actor, but I want to sit and gossip with him (she honestly confessed). We have spent so much time as friends not in front of camera that I think working with Aamir again is an experience," Rani told pleasantly.

Rani plays Roshni in Talaash, but refrained from revealing too much about her character, courtesy the suspense genre. "I can't say much about the character or film as it's a suspense drama. I think you talk about one thing which leads to another. It will be thrilling when audience will discover the film and each character in the film," said Rani with a slight pause.

Bollywood has established its own benchmark when it comes to comedy and action, but is suspense genre lacking behind, we quipped. "In the past we had movies like Madhumati, Woh Kaun Thi, Teesri Manzil. Its not that the industry didn't dealt with suspense thrillers, but I think over the period suspense changed into masala entertaining films. Now, again suspense drama is back telling a story with Talaash. So, let's see how the audiences react to it," said Rani.

The actress believes in versatility and trialing, but claims romance to be her comfort precinct. "I love doing romantic roles, I love doing drama. Any film that has romance or romantic drama is my comfort," confessed the actress.

Rani abstained to distinguish between female and male directors. "Actually directors don't have a gender. Either they are good or bad. It’s time people see the real me: Pooja

Pooja Gor who played the perfect bahu in 'Mann Ki Aawaz...Pratigya' is nostalgic that the show ended recently but confessed to being happy that she was part of such a successful soap. In town to promote, her new show, 'The Serial', this Amdavadi exuded easy charm and made a pretty picture in a peach blouson teamed with white cotton pants.

In her last soap outing, Pooja had sported a traditional look in sarees. Pooja admits that it was getting "monotonous to keep wearing sarees throughout the show. Daily soaps mean tedious shooting schedules and it gets physically exhausting. It was about time that I showed my fans that I too, have a different side. I have anchored film award shows and done Comedy Circus, but I needed to prove my versatility as an actor. It is important for my professional growth." She adds, "When I heard about this concept a year back, it sounded a little different. I had no time then. But a few months ago, everything fell in place. The story is shown through the eyes of a 17-year old boy. We have taken inspiration from real life instances as well."

Commenting on the logistics and the way the TV industry functions, Pooja mentions how everything that on TV depends on TRPs. She says, "The industry is taking it easy right now because TRPs are not being taken in consideration for another two weeks, so production houses can experiment with the screenplay every week." Pooja, who also turned anchor for Laakhon Mein Ek, says, "Being an anchor is tough, because you have to be sharp and responsive. I am glad I did a show like this. I did an episode on Gulabi Gang leader Sampat Pal and I think she is the real-life 'Pratigya'."

Pooja, who has never been too vocal about her relationship with actor Raj Singh Arora confesses that she has never hidden it either. She says, "People speculate about actors' personal lives anyway. While urban India has opened up to dating/live -in relationships, most people are still not broad minded to accept them. However, I don't believe in flaunting my relationship." Pooja who's missing her parents and home (in Ahmedabad) is planning to take a break after this show. She says, "I miss my brother. I will take him with me after he finishes school so that we can be together," she says on a parting note.

Kareena is giving company to hubby Saif Ali Khan on the sets of his film in Lucknow, and here's how she's whiling away her time...

The shooting of Bullet Raja shifted to the Cantonment in Lucknow on Thursday. And where nobody had access, the LT lensman found a vantage point to get pics of the stars. Shooting at a house on Thimayya Road, Saif canned an action sequence with on-screen buddy Jimmy Sheirgill, while Kareena sat by herself, watching Saif work.

In between shots, Saif would join Kareena and the two would sit and chat. The couple also lunched together. But for most of the time, Kareena was on the phone while at the same time working on her laptop. According to observers, the actor ordered cup after cup of coffee or cold drinks. Kareena gladly signed autographs for a few kids but, soon signalled to the guard to let no one around her.

It is believed that the couple met up with Aamir Khan late at night. Aamir, who was in town to promote his film, was staying at the same hotel as the couple.

Abhay Deol takes a dig at Bollywood awards

Taking a dig at the numerous Bollywood awards, actor Abhay Deol said Saturday that most awards are either rigged or actors attend them because they are paid for their presence.

"Talk to any actor off record and he will tell you, you either go because you are winning an award or you go because you are getting paid. Otherwise, you don't go," Abhay said during an interactive session at a film festival event.

"In that case, pay me and I'll perform. If you tell me you are awarding talent, then no. It is just an exercise in appeasing those you have worked with or appeasing those you want to work with," he said candidly.

He recalled an instance from 2009 when his movie "Dev D", a radical take on the iconic "Devdas" film, rocked the theatres, and despite an electrifying and a well-appreciated performance, Abhay was not nominated for any awards.

"I was promoting 'Road, Movie' at an award function and no one wanted to talk to me about 'Road...'. The entire press wanted to know why I wasn't selected for an award. And I said, 'It was a family fare. If you are part of the family, then you will get it.' And I stick by that," Abhay said.

"The validation that I might be doing something right is the fact that I didn't get the award," he joked.

Sunny Leone all set for first item number?

Contrary to reports that Sunny Leone may not do an item number in " Singh Sahib The Great", filmmaker Anil Sharma says he is keen to shoot the song with her and that they are working on her dates.

"Sunny Leone is a wonderful human being. She is a very good friend. We are trying to work on her dates. She is busy with her other projects. There are some date issues and nothing more than that. I want to work with her and we are trying to incorporate an item number with her," Anil Sharma told IANS.

There were rumours that the film's main lead Sunny Deol has refused to work with the Indo-Canadian porn star as he wasn't too pleased when the jokes about him and the actress started doing the rounds.

Sharma clarified it saying: "All these are just rumours. Sunny Deol is one actor in Bollywood who is least interested in getting into controversies. He only wants each and every actor to grow. He was very upset after he got to know about the rumours."

Shooting for Singh Sahib The Great will start Dec 10 and Sharma said that it would be a "50 days schedule till January-end".

"During the same time, I am planning to shoot for the item number as well," added the director who has roped in Ameesha Patel for the female lead.

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 24 November 2012 | 21.44

Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar are known as one of the best writer-duos in the Hindi film industry and it seems the latter's daughter Zoya is likely to repeat the same success story with writing partner Reema Kagti.

The legendary duo of Salim-Javed have written some cult films like "Zanjeer", "Sholay", "Don", and "Deewar", while Zoya-Reema have scripted together "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara" and "Talaash".

Asked if she and Reema are the new Salim-Javed of the industry, Zoya said: "For that we will have to deliver around 25 blockbusters... There is no chance before that. Salim-Javed were amazing and we are very far away from that."

"When we write together then the ideas are very good and we finish the work soon. We both fight too much but we have immense trust and respect for each other. If she doesn't agree to certain things, I get a signal that there is some problem. We fight but it's not about our ego problem. I love working with her," added Zoya, 40.

Atif Aslam’s leave of absence in Raipur

After Raipur's postponement, uncertainty loomed over his Indore concert too

The big stage of Science College grounds wore a deserted look on Wednesday as Pakistani singer Atif Aslam could not keep his promise with the Raipur janta. Owing to visa troubles, Atif's concert was postponed and thousands of his fans were left disheartened.

Yogesh Agrawal, one of the coordinators said, "The event has been postponed due to visa issues as Atif could not get clearance from the Pakistani authorities, there are no issues from Indian government".

If sources are to be believed, more than 1 crore have been spent on Atif, and show's preparations. "More than 1 crore had been spent on event and promotions here in Raipur. While Atif Aslam and his group charged around 30 lakh, his journey fares and hotel expenses were around 1 lakh," added one of the event organizers on the condition of anonymity.

Fans of Atif who were eagerly waiting to see their favourite singer perform, were saddened by the news. Atul, a class 10th student said, "Raipur is facing tough times with independent concerts. Cancellation of Honey Singh's concert, followed by postponement of Atif Aslam's do - it's heart breaking for music lovers."

Atif has constantly been facing visa problems for travelling in India. He faced similar issues, while he was coming to India to promote Bol. Same problem arose during his singing- based reality show, Sur Kshetra, for which he is one of the judges.

Vicky, one of the coordinators of Miraj, the event management company for which Atif is a client said, "In Pakistan things take their own time. Authorities there haven't okayed his visa, but he will definitely perform in Indore, and the event will not face any setbacks, like Raipur."

His visa proceedings were still not cleared till the time of filing the report. One of the coordinators for the event in the city were furious and blamed Miraj for Atif's absence "We had already done all the arrangements, and this is for Miraj (the event management company which handles Atif Aslam's shows in India) to take care of. How can they commit to concerts, without tackling the visa issues before hand?," the source said.

Till the time of going to press, Atif hadn't arrived in Indore and the organizers were clueless as to what was happening.

"I can't disclose about the scene right now. I had to understand how important it was for the film... it would not look as if the scene was incorporated just for the attention. I know it sounds cliche," Tena told IANS.

"I hate doing kissing scenes. It's very dramatic. I feel very uncomfortable and awkward doing these scenes. I believe it's all in my head. I was in no position to argue with my director (Aditya Datt)," she said.

Acting in Indian theatre doesn't help pay bills: Kabir Bedi

Kabir Bedi, the imposing, baritone voice of Indian cinema and stage, almost tempered the tone of a film festival session with a frank admission that acting in Indian theatre does not "pay my bills".

It was almost as if long known friends were pouring out their cup of woes and anxieties, over a cup of tea.

The actor pointed to an almost symbiotic relationship between theatre, television and films and said that every genre was as essential as the other, in the life of an actor.

"Theatre is done largely for the love of the craft. Television makes you famous. And films immortalize you. That's the relationship between the three," Bedi said at the session.

"I am essentially someone who comes from the theatre. I love the theatre. Unfortunately, theatre doesn't pay the bills. Only in theatre abroad, I get a wage," Bedi said, adding that it was his love for the medium of theatre which forced him to turn back and dabble in it.

"Theatre has always been a fountainhead for ideas, both for cinema and television," he said.

"Each technology has its own uniqueness and its own effect. 'Life of Pi' is an example. It is a classic example of pure cinema. One cannot do in theatre or TV what Ang Lee did in 'Life of Pi'. Television's greatest ticket is immediacy, and long-running stories. There can be no duplication of either," Bedi said, giving his due to non-theatre mediums of performance.

Celebrated character actor and the darling of the multiplex audiences, Vinay Pathak said that independent filmmakers in India have a long way to go.

"Making a film is not enough. What needs to be done is spreading the film," Pathak said.

Theatre actor Dhritiman Chatterjee said that the actor's greatest satisfaction is on stage and establishing a connect with the live audience in the first few minutes.

"As an actor, your greatest satisfaction is on stage. That contact with the audience. Knowing (that) in the first five minutes whether you are making a connection with the audience or not, whether its working or not. That electrifying feeling you don't get in cinema," said Chatterjee, who has worked with some of the great filmmakers in Bengali cinema, namely Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen and Aparna Sen.

Sher Khan is a double hero film

The human 'Tiger' Salman Khan will share screen space with a computer-generated tiger in Sohail Khan's Sher Khan. Contrary to reports in TOI claiming that Sohail Khan's film Sher Khan has been 'canned' , the film is all set to to roll in January 2013.

Confirming this and refuting rumours that Salman has halted the project for the want of a Bengal Tiger, Sohail speaking from outside India said, "Once I start shooting in January all the rumours and speculation will die down. I am out of the country, so I've no idea about what's being written about my film. Even if I am in India I am too busy with pre-production to pay attention to rumours."

Sohail confirms a real-life tiger would play a pivotal part in the film along with Salman. "The film is a two-hero project, the human tiger (Salman) and the animal tiger," says Sohail.

One learns from a source that it's already been decided the tiger would be computer-generated. Says the source, "With the Animal Welfare Board breathing down their necks there is no question of a real tiger being used. Besides the Sher Khan unit has to be careful of Salman's neurological condition. Any stress can trigger it off. They aren't taking any chances."

Writer in me very strong, says Zoya Akhtar

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 21 November 2012 | 21.44

Zoya Akhtar, daughter of veteran writers Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani, says she always had the mind of a writer, and she won't ever give up her passion for anything.

"The writer in me is very strong. I feel whether I direct my next film or not, that will not majorly affect my life. But no matter where I am, I can't stop writing," Zoya told IANS.

"In school, I would always score the highest on essays. Since school, I was told that I can write," she added.

Besides, Zoya admits she always had the advantage of being Javed Akhtar's daughter.

"I only had an advantage of being his daughter because I had a special kind of upbringing. My brother and I grew up together and we never had this difference of a boy and a girl. Our exposure was very wide," she said.

Zoya says she imbibed good reading habits from her father, and a lot more from her mother, who parted ways with Javed Akhtar years ago.

"My mom was in film school when we were in school, so we used to go to FTII (Film and Television Institute of India) on weekends. She used to collect a lot of films and she used to have lot of DVDs on world cinema. So Farhan and I have seen lot of films with her."

"I have learnt swimming, cycling and camping... all this we learnt from or mother. The reading habit (is what) I got from my father. Reading, questioning, analysing, discussing... all that came from my father," she added.

Zoya says despite her parents' divorce, they had immense respect for each other.

"If my parents were together, life would have been different and now when they are not together, it's a different life. Now it's been too long. My parents' relationship is very strong, they have immense respect for each other and they are good friends."

In the meantime, Zoya is busy promoting thriller movie Talaash, which she has scripted.

Directed by Reema Kagti, Talaash features Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Rani Mukerji. It is slated to release Nov 30.

I don't take myself seriously: Sonam Kapoor

Actress Sonam Kapoor says she never takes herself seriously and that is why her comments are often misinterpreted.

"I don't take myself seriously. Critics often criticise me personally and my films. Media sometimes misinterpret my statement but I have always taken them positively. Rather, I find them too amusing. I say something about somebody on some context. I never intend to land in a controversy," said Sonam, who was in the Capital to launch film-critic Anna MM Vetticad's book "The Adventures of an Intrepid Film Critc".

Sonam, 27, who is the daughter of actor Anil Kapoor, started her career five years ago with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Saawariya" opposite Ranbir Kapoor.

The film did not do well at the box-office but Sonam says she did not regret her decision.

"I remember how my debut film was criticised by the media. There were reports saying that I should not have done this film (Saawariya) as a newcomer. But I have no regrets about it. I did the film because it was based on Fyodor Dostoevsky's 'White Nights', which is one of my favourite short stories. Moreover, I had my childhood friend Ranbir as my co-star and renowned director Sanjay Leela Bhansali making it. I was very excited, so it was not a tough call for me," she said.

Asked about the importance of critics in her life, Sonam said they play an important part to better herself as an actress.

"I honestly feel we need each other. At the end you need a referee to judge your performance. You need a perspective which might be different from yours. You need the review to better yourself but that does not mean a critic should be too personal to judge a film," she added.

Sonam will be seen again with Abhay Deol in " Raanjhnaa" after "Aisha" and has denied the rumours that she has problem with the actor.

"If things were not good between Abhay and I then I would not have worked with him again. He is a good co-star and I love him," she said.

The film is being made by "Tanu Weds Manu" director Anand L Rai. She will also be seen in Milkha Singh's biopic "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag" opposite Farhan Akhtar.

I am still a cinema student: Anurag Basu

Anurag Basu may have superhits like "Barfi", "Murder" and "Metro" behind him but the director feels he is still a student of cinema and has a long way to go.

He is free after "Barfi" and wants to dedicate that time to attending film workshops and festivals.

"My last few years have been busy because I was shooting so I couldn't attend any film festival but this I am happy to be at IFFI. This platform brings us close to cinema as a filmmaker and it is good for our own personal growth. I come here as a student," Basu told on the sidelines of the 43rd International Film Festival in Goa.

However, the director is a little disappointed on not seeing many of his Bollywood colleagues at the festival.

"I was very eager to come here because I thought I would meet a lot of colleagues as we are celebrating 100 years of Indian cinema but I am a little disappointed as not many of them are here. I thought I will meet people from fraternity to celebrate. People who are sitting in Mumabi free should have come. It's a big thing to miss," he added.

Talking about "Barfi", which is India's nomination for the Oscar in the best foreign film category, Basu said it was too early to hope anything.

"I will announce it as big achievement when it is nominated. It is just India's nomination and I know so many things have been written about it but I think it doesn't deserve so much of attention because it is just at an initial stage. I will keep my fingers crossed for Oscars," he added.

Basu is currently working on several scripts but has not finalized on one yet. He has given himself a December 14 deadline to land a another directing job.
