Politics is best left to professionals: Shah Rukh

Written By Unknown on Senin, 29 April 2013 | 21.44

Shah Rukh Khan believes that politics is a field best left to professionals.

"I can't become a politician all of a sudden. It's a professional field and you have to educate yourself for that," he said on a recent visit to Kerala.

At the same time, the actor is quick to point out that he doesn't think badly of the profession. "I don't I look down on politics. Asking me whether I've thought of entering politics is as good as asking me if I've given a thought to becoming an astronaut," he said, adding that as far as he is concerned, acting is what suits him best.

"It's what I've done all my life. I think I should try and do what I do best, which is also questionable at times. Honestly, I've no inclination towards politics," SRK said.

Bollywood movies that have been landmarks

Bollywood is completing a century of movies, which began in 1913 with the first all-Indian feature film " Raja Harishchandra", a silent, black-and-white story of a virtuous king from Hindu mythology. As women acting was taboo, young men took on the female roles. Here are six other Hindi hits that have been landmarks for the industry:

Alam Ara - (1931)
India's first "talkie", this also included the first song in Indian cinema, recorded live as there was not yet playback recording. The last remaining print of the film was destroyed in a fire in 2003. A love story between a prince and a gypsy girl inspired by America musical "Show Boat", the film was hugely successful. Newspaper reports said police were called in to control cinema crowds.

Mother India - (1957)
Mehboob Khan's blockbuster depicted the resilience of an Indian woman, while echoing fervent nationalism in the aftermath of India's independence from British rule. Top star Nargis plays a self-sacrificing mother who raises two sons in a poor village, ultimately gunning one of them down to uphold the community's honour. For one famous sequence, a farmer agreed to flood his own land. It was the first of just three Indian films nominated for an Oscar in the foreign-language category, which none of them won.

Mughal-e-Azam - (1960)
Director K. Asif's period epic still ranks amongst Bollywood's highest grossers, starring the legendary Dilip Kumar as a Mughal prince who falls in love with a court dancer, played by his one-time lover Madhubala. Noted for lavish, palatial sets and an immortal soundtrack, it was the costliest Indian film of its time and took 15 years to make, running into production and financial trouble during India's independence struggle.

Sholay - (1975)
India's first "curry" western and one of its most-loved hits, Sholay combined songs, romance, tragedy and violence. Influenced by "The Magnificent Seven", it tells a tale of two crooks who help a policeman gain revenge on a notorious gangster for crippling him and killing his family. Badlands in southern India where the film was made are still a tourist attraction.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge - (1995)
This is the longest-running movie in an Indian cinema, still showing on a big screen in Mumbai 18 years after its release. Produced by Yash Chopra, known for his picturesque romantic hits, it was partly shot in Switzerland -- now a popular destination for well-heeled Indians thanks to its role as a Bollywood backdrop. The film also cemented actor Shah Rukh Khan's position as one of India's biggest superstars.

3 Idiots - (2009)
Bollywood's highest-grossing movie worldwide, this screwball campus-comedy departed from other mainstream "masala" movies, questioning India's education system and student suicides. Superstar Aamir Khan took the lead, riding on the success of six previous blockbusters including his Oscar-nominated "Lagaan" (Land Tax) of 2001. Finding success in China and Hong Kong, " 3 Idiots" is set to be remade in Cantonese by filmmaker Stephen Chow, with talks also on for US and Italian versions.

Bhupathi married Lara in February, 2011. The couple was blessed with a daughter in January, 2012.

We only want glamerous actresses: Sudhir Mishra

Director Sudhir Mishra, whose films 'Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi', 'Dharavi' and 'Chameli' saw women playing strong characters, feels actresses today are not chosen on the basis of their talent.

Mishra's said actresses these days are just used for "glam quotient and sizzling item numbers".

"I really miss those days when directors like Guru Dutt, Satyajit Ray and Vijay Anand used to select actresses on the basis of their talent. But, today, we look for actresses in models. They have the glam quotient and film's budget being managed by their sizzling item numbers," said Mishra while speaking on the topic of 'Depiction of Women' at a film festival.

Having started his career as an assistant director and scriptwriter in Kundan Shah's comedy classic 'Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron', Mishra made his foray into direction with serious issue-based films.

He feels that during 80s and 90s women characters in films deteriorated when traders company took over the film industry.

"Hindi cinema has been showing strong women characters since 1950. 'Guide' and 'Mughal-E-Azam' are the best examples of films of that era.

"But, the retardation of women took place when trader companies took over the cinema in . But parallel cinema didn't change its track and filmmaker like Shyam Benegal used his actresses as a strong character in his films, Mishra said.

The 'Inkaar' helmer said his upbringing helped him realise the importance of women.

"My upbringing helped me to portray women in a strong light. I was very much attached to my mother and grandmother and I have seen how they used to balance everything in our house. That inspired me always to show women stronger in my scripts," he added.

Shah Rukh keeps chartered plane on standby

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 27 April 2013 | 21.44

Shah Rukh Khan is been torn between his two loves — films and cricket.

On one hand, the actor-producer is shooting for his next, an action comedy, and on the other hand, he's also trying to be present at most of the matches his team plays in the ongoing Indian Premier League, particularly at home turf, Eden Gardens.

Since he didn't want to miss an important game on Friday, SRK, who's shooting in Coimbatore, kept a chartered plane on standby, so he could jet set to Kolkata to reach the stadium in time for his team's face-off after packing up the day's shoot.

Suniel Shetty trying to tempt Mahesh Babu?

Suniel Shetty, who has one of the best farmhouse properties a couple of hours' drive from Mumbai, was trying to convince Andhra superstar Mahesh Babu to buy a nearby row house that would serve as his weekend getaway.

One hears, the plots are priced at around 7 crore, but Mahesh refused to be tempted because he lives in Hyderabad and a farmhouse at a hill station in Maharashtra is not ideal for him.

Incidentally, Mahesh is one of the few South Indian actors who is sure that he won't join Bollywood.

He would rather be in the industry that he has been ruling for a long time now.

When Vidya asked for Aditya's autograph!

After watching 'Aashiqui 2', Vidya Balan couldn't stop herself from asking her brother-in-law and actor Aditya Roy Kapoor for his autograph.

"She said, 'Give me your autograph.' I said what rubbish, but she said give and I said, 'OK fine, take it," Aditya told reporters at the film's special screening.

Vidya is married to Aditya's elder brother Siddharth, who is the managing director of Studios, Disney UTV.

She is in complete awe of Aashiqui 2 and calls it a beautiful love story. "I will say that I watched a beautiful love story after a very, very long time. You can really feel the love between those two people and I can't remember the last time when I felt like that when I watched a film," Vidya said.

She is also all praise for the director.

Difficult for Sonam to act with me: Dhanush

Better known as the unassuming man behind the rage of a song, 'Kolaveri Di', Dhanush has been storming the virtual space again. This time as the quintessential boy from Benaras, who pursues his love with dogged determination and cheeky punch lines.

The first promo of Raanjhanaa, produced by Eros is out, and the big talking point is the crackling chemistry between the film's unlikely romantic lead - Sonam Kapoor and Dhanush. But Rajinikanth's 30-year-old son-in-law (he is married to his daughter Aishwarya) is in some remote area in Tamil Nadu, shooting for a film, immune to the happy buzz on his Hindi film debut.

When TOI asked him about what went into the transformation of a Tamil star to a love-struck Benaras boy, he chose to play it down. "Aanand Rai (director) did not choose me for Kolaveri Di, but for my National Award-winning film Aadukalam. But frankly speaking, I did not have to go through any rigid preparation for the role."

Benaras was one of the few places in the country that Dhanush had not visited and he relied on the director to help him get the nuances right. "They gave me inputs to get the body language and mannerisms of a local lad correctly. What is extraordinary about this role is that this guy handles everything 'ulta.' A character many will relate to," he hopes.

But he also cautions that just as there is no question of playing up the paanchewing stereotype, there is no effort to smooth out the edges either. "Which character in films today doesn't have jagged edges?" he questions, while talking about Hindi cinema's love-hate relationship with characters born on the banks of the Ganga.

And while Dhanush confesses he is not likely to pop a juicy Benarasi paan into his mouth any time soon, he does seem to have developed a taste for the city's famed aloo-puri. "It became my breakfast staple," he laughs, adding, "Washed down with a cup of masala chai. And then, how can I forget Benaras ki rabdi?!"

Besides developing a taste for North Indian food, Dhanush admits he had to work on his dialogue delivery as well. And credits Sonam Kapoor for helping him find his groove. "Sonam and I met on the set for the first time. Given that I am not well versed with Hindi, she helped me understand so many things during the shoot. It must have been so difficult for her to act with me," he says. But when we tell him about how good they look together, he says, "That's because we understood the demands of the script well... every scene became like a group study." Dhanush insists he dubbed for all his lines. "It was tough but the writer Hemanshu and editor Hemal guided me all the through the pauses and punches."

The popular actor-lyricist-singer-producer says he is ready to be tried and tested by the Bollywood audience. "There is no such thing as a Bollywood hero or Hollywood hero," he says when we ask him if he fits the definition. "All you see on the screen is the lead actor's interpretation of the role that has been conceived by the writer. If Raanjhanaa works, maybe I will do more films here." And since he claims he knows no other Bollywood actress other than Sonam, Dhanush insists he does not mind being paired with her again.

Salman's 'Mental' gives Sanjay Leela Bhansali jitters

Putting an end to all speculation, the makers of Mental have decided that the Salman Khan starrer, produced by brother Sohail, will hit screens on November 22.

With two schedules under his belt, Sohail, who was all this while only interested in getting the film going, reportedly sat down with Salman and the team to finalise the release date.

While Salman's fans have reason to smile, the news may have given one man the heebie-jeebies.

Ever since he came to know of the decision, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, whose Ram Leela is releasing on November 29, has been having sleepless nights... and not without reason...

Earlier too, the filmmaker has had his fingers burnt when his movie Saawariya, which marked Ranbir Kapoor's debut, clashed with Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Om Shanti Om, with disastrous consequences.

Fact is, Bhansali had postponed the release of Ram Leela from August to November 29 only to avoid a collision with Rohit Shetty's Chennai Express that had always been slated for an Eid release. However, the November 22 Mental date has now posed a new problem for the director.

But why should Bhansali worry about a movie hitting theatres one week before the release of his Ram Leela?

"Salman's films usually run to packed houses for two weeks, and Bhansali would thus lose out on a major portion of the audience. So much so, he is now contemplating moving his film out of the November 29 slot," said the source.

Vidya was being dressed wrongly: Sabyasachi

"Vidya was being dressed wrongly until she met me," says Sabyasachi about why it's important to work with his famous client

Sabyasachi, who has been consistently draping our top actresses in his signature sarees, apparently is in two minds--whether to make Vidya Balan wear a saree or an ethnic dress on the red carpet.

But even as he waits for his muse to make up her mind, he is sure of one thing - she will pack different kinds of looks for her stay. "She will be attending a lot of events and after parties as well, so she needs dresses for that also," he says, adding that while he is not designing her jewellery, he is crafting a few clutches.

Even though Vidya has always had an issue with her fluctuating weight, Sabya insists she fits the description of his ideal woman. "I am a designer and I dress up all kinds of body sizes," he says, adding, "My favourite actress is Judy Dench and she is a curvy woman. I hate to see anorexic women with straight hair aiming to fit into the tradition of how a woman should look. Vidya looks like a quintessential Indian woman and not a model."

While it is but natural for Sabya to shower praises on his muse, it is common knowledge that he came into her life at a critical time. Sabya agrees, "She was being dressed up wrongly. I came in at the right juncture and may be I advised her correctly. But she is always somebody I have loved to dress up."

Taking pride in his star client's achievements, Sabya says, "Look at how far we have come together. It's so nice to see her climb from strength to strength."

'Dhoom 3' not to step outside YRF premises

Yash Raj is going all out to protect the look of 'Dhoom 3', starring Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif and Abhishek Bachchan, from leaking into the media.

Last week, Yash Raj officials issued a directive to Prime Focus, the company entrusted with the job of colour correction and editing of the visual effects for the film. According to the directive, the colour correction and editing of the VFX footage will not be done at the Prime Focus studio but inside the YRF premises where a makeshift studio will be erected. The required machines have to be shifted there along with the team involved in the project.

A source said, "YRF feels that there is a risk if the colour correction and editing is not done under their supervision. They seem to be apprehensive that too much information on Dhoom 3 would leak out.The security deployed is to be seen to be believed," added the source.

Confirming the step, business head of Prime Focus Neeraj Sanghai explained, "YRF doesn't want any footage of Dhoom 3 to get leaked."

A similar directive was sent to Tata Elxsi Ltd, who has been assigned to do the VFX for the film. However Tata officials had refused to shift base. The source said, "It is because the work Tatas is doing would have required at least 200 men to be present in Yash Raj, which would have been terribly inconvenient and chaotic."

Teesri Kasam lands Bihar CM in trouble

The end doesn't always justify the means and the case in point this time is Bihar Chief Minister's recent campaign to promote his government's rural development programmes. He is caught on the wrong side of the law for holding public screenings of Basu Bhattacharya's iconic film 'Teesri Kasam' that won the National Award for best feature, without seeking the required permission.

Nitish Kumar, who heads the state's rural development department, had flagged off a massive programme on March 5. The rural development campaign aims to cover around 2000 Panchayat areas of the 38 districts. As part of the initiative, around 115 mobile cinema halls will roam the villages of Bihar and screen the Raj Kapoor and Waheeda Rehman starrer which will be paused at regular intervals for 'live advertisements' where officials will talk about the different rural schemes. However, the organisers forgot one vital step—to obtain the screening permissions from the family members of the film's producer, late Shailendra.

The family members are now planning to seek a compensation of Rs15 crores from the Bihar government for holding public screenings of the film without their permission. They have sent separate letters (which TOI has got copies of) to the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari regarding this. The family is planning to sue the Bihar government if it fails to respond to the letters within seven days.

"We had secured a court order in 1967, which clearly states that we are sole copyright owners of the film. I was shocked that the Bihar government just bought DVDs from the market and decided to screen it for the villagers," Dinesh Shailendra, the youngest son of Shailendra, said.

When TOI got in touch with Preeta Verma, Special Secretary, Home department, and asked if she was aware of any such letter, she said: "We are aware of the rural development scheme but we have not received any such letter. There is a possibility that the letter didn't reach us because they did not need to get in touch with the relevant department."

Ironically, Shailendra hailed from Ara district of Bihar and the film was shot in the state as well.

Have oomph factor, will reveal it one day: Parineeti

Parineeti Chopra was shooting at Film City for 'Hansi Toh Phansi' with Siddharth Malhotra when TOI caught up with her. With a special mention for her performance in 'Ishaqzaade' at the 60th National Awards and a slew of rather interesting films on the anvil, she is never at a loss for words, even when we try to catch her off guard with the tricky questions. Excerpts from the conversation:

There was a time when you disliked actors and acting, isn't it?
(Laughs) Yes, I used to think that the profession was an excuse to wear too much makeup, travel far and wide, and make quick money. Let me be more candid. I thought actors were successful for no reason. And everyone at YRF would tell me what a big dramebaaz I was.

If we are not wrong, even Anushka Sharma used to address you the same way
Yes. Even Rani Mukerji used to tell me the same thing. (Pauses) Slowly I realised acting was no cakewalk. And I started nursing a strong desire to make a splash in Bollywood.

And your second film Ishaqzaade got you a speacial mention at the 60th National Awards
I am very excited at the thought of receiving this honour from the President of India. I will never forget that day when I started receiving a flurry of messages congratulating me for the same. But I couldn't believe it until Karan Johar and my sister sent me a similar text.

Buzz is, you are losing more weight because you have to shoot in a bikini for Karan Johar's Hansi Toh Phansi.
That's not true. But I wouldn't mind donning a bikini one day if I have the body for it.

But you are known more as a girl next door and not for oomph.
Does that mean I don't have it? Just because I have been fully clothed in all my films till date? If and when the time comes, I shall make you change your opinion. Besides, times are changing. You have actresses who are not in-the-face sexy like Rani, Vidya... yet they are cast without batting an eyelid, aren't they?

Let's talk about your battle with the weighing scale.
I was obese in college. Today, I am not in the best shape alright, but I am not overweight. Few people in this world are blessed to be skinny. So yes, I am working out a lot and I have a few don'ts in my diet... like I have given up my favourite food, pizza, for one. I am in a profession where one has to constantly look good.

And Ishaqzaade saw you playing a Muslim girl who marries a Hindu boy. What if you fall in love with a Muslim boy in real life?
I will marry him. Caste and religion is no bar for me.

It's said you are in love with Maneesh Sharma.
I am not dating Maneesh for sure. But yes, I have all the love and respect for him. He is the reason why I could get into films. It's funny, I got linked up with not only Maneesh but even Ranveer Singh, Uday Chopra, Arjun Kapoor and Jackky Bhagnani.

Is Anushka upset with you because you got close to Arjun?
There is no problem between us. She is also close to Arjun. And as I said, I am not dating. Neither Maneesh, nor anyone else.

I’ve been surrounded by very strong women: Farhan Akhtar

Prior to his trip to Kolkata today to promote the MARD campaign, Farhan Akhtar shared what the driving force behind his initiative is and what's next on his itinerary. Excerpts:

How is MARD shaping up?
The response has been really positive. I'm hoping that we can sustain this movement and bring about a positive change. I am grateful to everyone for having shown a tremendous amount of support for MARD. It belongs to everyone.

Many from the film industry have come forward to support the initiative. Is this one of the reasons for its popularity?
With people from the film industry supporting it, it did get a huge boost. But at end of the day, it is a people's movement and doesn't belong to any one person.

Was there a social activist somewhere inside you earlier too?
It is not something I had planned and happened over a period of time. We have been seeing incidents around us. The unfortunate incident in Delhi (the Nirbhaya gangrape) saw one of the most massive social movements in recent times. The fallout too was equally strong. But there we saw the problems with our mindset, something that had seeped into our political culture, our society and our films. Some of the things being said highlighted the skewed view certain people have about what makes a man — the qualities of a mard.

From director, actor, singer to social activist now, your resume is getting longer...
(Laughs) It is not surprising though. I've been surrounded by very strong women. My mother, my sister — they're all very strong and outspoken. Our father too, who treated both my sister and me equally and ingrained these qualities in us. Even my wife is a very strong woman. Our daughters have very good role models to follow.

How many hours a day do you pack in then?
I don't keep track really. I just do whatever I am doing as long as I am enjoying it. You know like kids go on playing as long as they can before they are pulled up. In fact, I'm doing this for my children. I want them to grow up in an environment of freedom and equality. I want them to feel safe and confident.

You mentioned somewhere that you are quite like the characters in the film Fukrey that you are producing...
(Laughs) Oh yes, I was quite like that — good for nothing — in my 20s, till one fine day my mom put her foot down and told me to get my act straight.

What was your childhood ambitions like?
Like all little kids, I went through the gamut of them. Once I wanted to be a pilot, then next, influenced by the pop and rock music of my growing up years, I wanted to be a singer...

There's a buzz that you're starting your own NGO...
No, I am not interested in starting an NGO. I would like to influence thought and behaviour rather than go fund-hunting and ask for donations. We want genuine interest and people should join on their own, not because I have invited someone.

Coming back to your film career, which has been the toughest role for you so far?
Undoubtedly, that of Milkha Singh in terms of the physicality. It required tremendous discipline and sacrifice to be able to look and portray such a character who is a living legend and a national pride. It was a huge responsibility.

How did you manage to look exactly like Milkha Singh?
I worked really hard to make it possible. A lot of people have told me that they are struck by the resemblance. It makes me feel good and satisfied. It was a team effort. Hair, makeup, fitness, wardrobe... every department played a role in making it so realistic.

Are you going to be in your sister Zoya's next film, the family drama that she had been planning?
Yes, I am definitely producing it. It is at the casting stage right now.

What are your plans on this trip to Kolkata?
I need to say a big thank you to the BCCI and both the teams (Kolkata and Punjab) for the support and for giving us the opportunity to come and share the charter of MARD with the people of Kolkata and letting us be part of the IPL. We want to re-introduce the values we Indians are known for, the values that somehow we seem to be forgetting. We want to raise awareness and spread the message of strong social values and respect for women.

HC restrains channel from telecasting news against Salman

Holding that prima facie a news channel had telecast defamatory allegations against actor Salman Khan, the Bombay High Court restrained it from telecasting such items.

Justice S J Kathawalla was hearing a suit filed by Salman seeking a written apology from ABP News channel for telecasting a news item allegedly defamatory to the actor.

Salman approached the high court seeking an injunction on broadcast or telecast of such defamatory news items and direction to the channel to either submit a written apology or telecast an apology.

Granting the interim relief of injunction, Justice Kathawala said, "I am prima facie satisfied that the Defendants (ABP) are indulging in broadcasting defamatory allegations against the Plaintiff (Salman) which are likely to prejudice the Plaintiff in defence to the pending proceedings before the Sessions Court."

The matter has been posted for further hearing tomorrow.

On September 28, 2002, Salman had allegedly rammed his car into a bakery in suburban Bandra killing one and injuring four others who were sleeping on the footpath. Police said he was under the influence of liquor. The actor was then arrested and granted bail.

Recently, the Sessions Court had ruled that the actor be charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder which attracts ten years jail term. Earlier, he was being tried by a Magistrate for 'rash and negligent driving' for which punishment prescribed is two years. Salman's appeal against this ruling is pending in the Sessions Court.

SRK didn't tell me Bobby was replaced: Juhi Chawla

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 25 April 2013 | 21.44

Juhi talks about her changing equation with Shah Rukh and rivalry with Madhuri

We caught up with Juhi Chawla on the sets of Gulab Gang and the actress was looking leaner than her usual self. "I have been under the weather for the past three days," she said looking anything but. Apart from the new and improved look, what was conspicuous was the absence of her omnipresent secretary Sanjay KS. And this got us curious...

Seems, we are seeing a new Juhi. What happened to Sanjay KS, your secretary of over two decades?
Things have changed and I have decided to let go of the old ways of doing things. Now, I have an agency, which looks into my endorsements and films. Importantly, I am not competing with anybody. Filmmakers know my acting capabilities and I am just a phone call away.

After so many years, you and Madhuri are finally working together. How did it happen?
When you are flying too high, many a times, you let your ego take the decisions. In my case, I ended up making Karisma Kapoor a star in the process (laughs). I was the first choice for Raja Hindustani. Also, she went on to do Dil To Pagal Hai, which was offered to me first. Coming to Gulab Gang, I was bowled over when I learnt that they wanted me to play a negative role. Madhuri is the hero and I am the villain. We tried to modify few lines for the role, which wasn't written with me in mind, but realised the changes would take away the punch. So we went ahead with it in its original form.

What is the equation between you two on the sets?
Now, it is nice (smiles).

QSQT is turning 25 this year. Are you attending the reunion organised by Aamir to celebrate the occasion on April 29?
I am looking forward to it. It would be great fun to meet the cast and crew. I have met Aamir and Imran at functions, but we haven't ever sat down and chatted.

Over to SRK. It seems your friendship with him isn't the same as before...
(Shakes her head) Why would I fall out with anybody? I still treat everyone the same. But yes I don't reach out to people as often as I used to—be it with Shah Rukh or any one else. Today, nobody has time for friendships.

Buzz is, the friction between SRK and you started when he replaced your brother Bobby with Venky Mysore as the CEO of Red Chillies, without informing you. Your comments.
I don't know if I was informed before or after Venky assumed office, but it was Venky who called me and told me about the development.

SRK didn't inform you?
No.

Did you feel bad?
Yes. But not because SRK didn't inform me. In fact, I told Venky 'please go ahead and take up your new assignment'. But suddenly I started feeling bad because it struck me that the job, which my brother did so efficiently for the longest time, will now be done by someone else.

How is Bobby now? Heard you shifted him to Jaslok?
Yes, he is in Jaslok now. As for the first part of your question... (suddenly she looks up and tries hard to control her emotions).

Now that your kids have grown up a little, would we see you doing more films?
Jhanvi is 12. Arjun is just 10. I am still spending a lot of time with them. I love to teach them Hindi and Mathematics--the two subjects I am very comfortable with. Jhanvi wants to be a writer. Arjun is an all rounder who is yet to make up his mind about his future. But they aren't idolising any actor. They don't even watch my films.

Why haven't you worked with Salman till date?
(Laughs) Sometimes Salman will be nice but sometimes I can't fathom what is going on in his head.

Vidya Balan: Cannes I pull it off in a saree?

Anxious Vidya calls up Sabya to work out a slam-proof look for her Red Carpet stint

On Wednesday morning, Vidya Balan was chosen to be a part of the nine-member jury, headed by Steven Spielberg, at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

The actress, who was busy shooting for a special song at Filmalaya studio for Ghanchakkar, did not have enough time to field media queries about the honour. But she did have time to make that one very critical call: to the man who has turned her into the biggest brand ambassador of the saree, Sabyasachi.

Given that Vidya has never had an easy relationship with the fashion police, and how the Cannes red carpet comes under the severest scrutiny, sources close to the actress say she has been quite anxious about her high-profile appearance.

When she called Sabya with a mix of excitement and apprehension, the feeling was mutual. A friend of the actress said: "Sabyasachi is very excited to be a part of Vidya's big moment. They have become thick friends over the years and Vidya trusts the designer blindly when it comes to designing her sarees. However, Sabya is a bit nervous this time, as he doesn't want anything to go wrong on the red carpet."

The designer called up Nisha Kundnani, an independent stylist who has worked with Aamir and Kiran Rao in the past. A source added: "Sabya requested Nisha to carry alternative options for Vidya, in case there were last-minute changes."

While Ash has mostly stuck to western designers for her Cannes appearances, Sonam Kapoor and Deepika have turned to the saree for making a mark at the fashion mecca.

Supreme Court stays Zanjeer 2.0 release

On April 3, the Bombay High Court had given a go-ahead to Amit Mehra's remake of the 1973 blockbuster Zanjeer. Justice RD Dhanuka had allowed Amit's production house, Adai Mehra Productions Ltd, to not only complete the film but release it as well.

However, the latest is the Supreme Court has ordered a stay on the film's release. The SC has ordered the arbitrator to complete the arbitration proceedings expeditiously and positively within the next six weeks.

The apex court order comes in the wake of Amit's brothers, Sumeet and Puneet, approaching it against the HC order. Amit's remake of his father, late Prakash Mehra's Zanjeer, had run into trouble with his two brothers terminating the contract that gave him the remake rights in the first place. His siblings had alleged that Amit, who had bought the remake rights from them, had defaulted on payments amounting to crores of rupees. Acting on their complaint, the Bombay HC had, on March 27, ordered that the trailer of Zanjeer 2.0 should not be aired until further notice. When the arbitrator upheld the termination of the contract, Amit had approached the Bombay HC.

Coming back to the SC order, Puneet confirmed the same, speaking to TOI from Delhi. While Amit remained unavailable for comment, his lawyer, Senior Managing Partner of Little & Co, J Kapadia, said: "The matter now rests with the arbitrator. We wouldn't like to elaborate further."

Sumeet and Puneet were represented by advocates Snehalata Paranjape and Harish Salve while RF Mariman and Dr Abhishek Manu Singhvi represented Amit in the SC.

Nana Patekar says he won't work with Sanjay Dutt

Award-winning actor Nana Patekar has spoken out against Sanjay Dutt in a rare outburst amid a chorus of celebrities voicing support for the convicted Bollywood star who returns to prison in May.

Patekar, a Bollywood veteran and three-time National Award winner, said he will never work with Dutt or watch his films.

"That is the punishment I can give him from my side," the 62-year-old actor told a Marathi news channel.

Dutt was sentenced to six years in jail in 2007 for acquiring illegal weapons from men convicted for the 1993 Mumbai bombings that killed 257 people, but has been out on bail ever since.

In March, the Supreme Court reduced Dutt's sentence to five years and ordered him to return to prison. On April 17, the court granted the 53-year-old actor four more weeks of freedom, allowing him to finish work on some of his films before serving the remainder of his prison term.

Dutt was cleared of conspiracy charges in the bombings but was found guilty of illegal possession of an AK-56 rifle and a pistol, weapons that he claimed were to protect him and his family during a period of rioting.

Patekar hinted that Dutt, the most high-profile of 100 people involved in the Mumbai bombings trial, had been let off lightly.

Twelve people received the death penalty and 20 others were given life sentences in the case.

"The nature of his crime is horrible. Why should justice be meted out differently for him?" Patekar said.

"The law is different for a poor man and different for me, just because I am actor? Why should that be?" he said.

Patekar's reaction is at odds with the Hindi film industry that came out in Dutt's support and called for him to be pardoned, describing him as a misguided youth and a victim of his star lineage.

Dutt, son of actor and former Congress minister Sunil Dutt and actress Nargis, enjoys goodwill in both politics and the movie industry. His sister Priya is a Congress lawmaker from Mumbai.

SRK’s studio to do VFX for Priyanka’s Mary Kom look

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 24 April 2013 | 21.44

When Priyanka Chopra starts shooting for director Omung Kumar's biopic on Mary Kom, she won't be sporting Northeastern features like India's female boxing champion.

Buzz is that instead of using prosthetics, her look will be created in the post-production stage. And interestingly, Shah Rukh Khan's VFX studio is one of the studios where this will be done.

Explaining why the makers aren't high on prosthetics, our source said, "The film is about a woman boxing champion and there are a number of sequences in the boxing ring. Obviously, there will be a lot of punching on the face and head, so prosthetics may not last. To help Priyanka get that authentic look, technicians will be working on giving her the Northeastern features in the post-production VFX stage."

When contacted, Omung said that they're trying both options — prosthetics and post. "Nothing is confirmed yet. We're not using such heavy makeup or prosthetics that will come off during the boxing scenes. Besides, Priyanka will also be wearing a headgear. We will decide in about 15 days, as to what would give us better results."
As for SRK's company doing the VFX, Omung said, "Nothing is confirmed yet. At this point in time, we're still working out our options."

Madhoo Shah’s stalker ordeal ends

The mysterious case where actor Madhoo, best known for her role in 'Roja', was inundated with letters containing explicit photographs and obscene threats has come to a close with the police all set to file a closure report.

Madhoo, who received a series of obscene letters in November 2012, had lodged a complaint with the Malabar Hill police, who suspected that the sender was an insider from the extended family.

Police sources familiar with the developments said Bollywood actor Juhi Chawla's husband Jay Mehta helped Madhoo by getting her husband Anand Shah and the sender to "amicably settle the matter."

While Mehta could not be reached for comment, Madhoo told TOI she was unaware of a settlement between her husband and the sender. She, however, admitted that the letters had stopped and she was relieved.

"The obscene letters I was frequently getting have stopped coming completely and I am in a happy space today," she told this newspaper, talking about the letters that she received till December 2012.

"The initial days were nerve wracking. Thankfully my family rallied around me and asked me not to worry. My husband was very understanding. But the sender was clearly a pervert with an idle mind. I told myself that the contents of the letters speak about him, not me."

Madhoo's ordeal began in October 2012 when letters containing explicit photos of the actor started arriving at the family's Malabar Hill residence. The letters were also sent to the central excise office, the local police station and even to the school where her children study.

In their complaint to the police, the couple told the Malabar Hill police that the letters mentioned addresses -one of certain A Mafatlal and another of Mohammad Shakeel Qureshi, an acquaintance of the family. Both the family and the police treated this with caution and gave the benefit of doubt to the two people as they found the addresses on the letters to be fake.

Shah later told the police that he suspected a Baroda-based businessman to be behind the letters. Shah said he had registered a non-cognisable complaint against the businessman for allegedly threatening him following a deal gone bad. But the police could not find any evidence against the businessman either, which is when they began suspecting an insider. With even surveillance footage from the post offices where the letters were sent from did not yield any results, the probe soon hit a dead-end.

"The investigations had already reached a dead-end," said an officer from the Malabar Hill police station."And now with the family telling us they do not want to pursue the matter further, we will close the case with the opinion that though the incident may have occurred, there is no evidence to substantiate it."

Zone II DCP Nisar Tamboli, said, "There are no further leads in the case and it has reached a dead end. But the investigations from our side are still on and appropriate action will be taken soon."

It's all in the numbers for Shah Rukh Khan

Stars often come with the added quirks, and Shah Rukh Khan is no exception. Much as he would like the world to think otherwise, the actor is a strong believer in numerology and the power of numbers. So much so, he insists that all things around him - at least those that have a number attached - stick to a combination of the numbers 555 and 40. Apparently, he always had a fascination for 555 but 40 is a recent addition to his list of favourites.

If sources close to Shah Rukh are to be believed, the last five digits of three of his personal mobile numbers are a mix of 555 and 40. His wife Gauri and all senior officials working with him have either or both these numerals as part of their mobile numbers. Even his closest colleague Karuna Badwal and 80 staff members have them in their official mobile numbers. His car bears the number plate 555 and his personal email id too has a combination of these digits.

In recent months, Shah Rukh has been getting increasingly finicky about the numbers' game and doesn't like to be associated with the number three or its multiples.

So is he a self-styled numerologist? "Shah Rukh is not only in touch with a reputed numerologist but also burns the midnight oil studying the science," said a source close to the actor, adding, "This is such a well-kept secret that only Shah Rukh can answer who is his numerologist."

Well... any guesses...

Freida Pinto is no Salman or Shah Rukh: 'Trishna' producer

Although Freida Pinto's international career has been on an upward swing ever since the release of 'Slumdog Millionaire', back home, she is yet to be regarded as someone capable of ensuring a decent box office opening - or so is the opinion of Sunil Bohra, whose Hindi version of 'Trishna' is yet to see the light of the day. And according to him, it is due to the absence of a star in the film.

When TOI caught up with Bohra, the producer of the film, and asked him about the reason behind the delay, he said, "I have been waiting to release the Hindi version of Trishna since the longest time. I have to choose the right Friday when there are few films releasing. I don't want my film to get lost in the crowd. I am looking at a June release. Only Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan's films don't get lost in the crowd."

The bilingual, directed by Michael Winterbottom, is an adaptation of Thomas Hardy's classic 'Tess of the D'Ubervilles' and is co-produced by Anurag Kashyap. The English version of the film was premiered at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival on September 9. The Hindi version of the film was scheduled to release in December 2012, which was postponed to March 2013. Freida, who was willing to come down to India to promote the film , today, has no clue about the developments. A friend of hers told us, "It is surprising why Bohra has not released the Hindi version when the English version has already come and gone."

Stars and their summer vacation schedule

For once you need not envy the stars. At a time when you will be enjoying your vacation, most of them will be hard at work

Ms Busybee - Deepika Padukone
Bollywood's Ms Busybee has hardly any time to breathe. With three major releases lined up - Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (May 31), Chennai Express (August 8) and Ram Leela (November 29), she has been "working like a woman possessed," say her friends. The last time she took a break was during Race 2, when she painted Dubai love-red with her rumoured beau Ranveer Singh.

Feeling hot, hot, hot - Ranbir Kapoor
Ushering in the New Year with Katrina in New York, was probably the last time RK took some serious time off from work. He still has some work left on Yeh Jawaani... and is in the thick of Besharm (directed by Abhinav Kashyap, releasing October 2), which has kept him in Delhi and Chandigarh. And then there are his other commitments - ad shoots, charity football and some time off for his girlfriend - all the things that keep a hot star looking hotter we say!

The juggler - Aamir Khan
He rarely takes up more than one project at a time. But this year has been an exception. Handling PK and Dhoom 3 (December 25) has been quite a challenge for the actor, who does not like loose ends. So much so, his friend Sachin Tendulkar recently said that they have not had time to meet up with each other, thanks to their work schedule. And now with Aamir travelling half way round the globe for a three-hour dinner commitment, he certainly seems keen to set a new standard for busy-ness.

Action hero - Ranveer Singh
There are way too many things that keep him on his toes. When he is not shooting for Gunday (mostly Kolkata), he is nailing some seriously intense scenes with Deepika, or simply serenading her in full view of the world. And when all else gets over, he seems to be fond of injuring himself - accidentally of course. With Sanjay Leela Bhansali cracking the whip on Ranveer, it's gonna be all work and little play for the energetic actor.

Jet, set, go! - Saif and Kareena
Kareena has been busy with Satyagrah (Bhopal) and Gori Tere Pyaar Mein (Bangalore, Goa) while Saif had Go Goa Gone and Bullet Raja (Lucknow, Kolkata) and they chartered flights to meet up between their respective shoots. While the couple took off to Maldives for a short break, Gstaad, their favourite European destination will have to wait for a while it seems.

Pause only for a cause - SRK
No time to pause for SRK, whose Chennai Express is chugging ahead, full steam. Last year, he managed to squeeze in some 'me time' in London, but this year he has no plans for a long vacation say sources close to him. However, if all things go according to plan, SRK may just take a short break sometime in June, when his son Aryan takes off from school in London.

Bang on target - Hrithik Roshan
Last year he had taken off to Maldives, but HrithikRoshan is sweating it out this time. Besides spending hours on the crucial post-production of Krrish 3, he is now prepping to start off his next- Bang Bang with Katrina. He is off to Europe, but certainly not mixing business with pleasure.

But they are on holiday
Ajay Devgn and Kajol with kids will be holidaying in London for more than a month

Akshay Kumar with his family will be spending a month in Europe

Bollywood pays tribute to Shamshad Begum

Hindi film fraternity today mourned the demise of legendary singer Shamshad Begum, calling her death the end of an era in Hindi cinema music

Begum died last night at her Powai residence in presence of her daughter Usha Ratra and son-in-law Yog Ratra.

Begum, who ruled playback singing in the '40s and 50s, was the voice behind evergreen hits like 'Kahin Pe Nigahen Kahin Pe Nishaana', 'Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon', 'Kabhi Aar Kabhi Paar' and 'Kajra Mohabbat Wala'.

Melody queen Lata Mangeshkar started her playback singing when Begum was at the peak of her career.

Mangeshkar, who sang many duets with Begum like 'Darna Mohabbat Karle from 1949 film 'Andaz', 'Pyar Ke Jahan Ki from 1949 film 'Patanga' and 'Bachpan Ke Din' 1951's 'Deedar', said she was saddened to hear about her death.

"Aaj subha mujhe pata chala ki mashhoor playback singer shamshad begumji humare beech nahi rahi, ye sunke mujhe bohot dukh hua, maine unke saath kafi filmo mein gaane gaaye, wo bohot acchhi hasmukh aur sidhi saadhi shakhsiyat thi, main unko shraddhanjali arpit karti hun," Mangeshkar tweeted.

("I got to know about the demise of famous singer Shamshad Begumji today. I felt very sad as I sang with her in many films. She was a lively and simple person.)

Reacting to her death, megastar Amitabh Bachchan said, "The golden voice of Shamshad Begum, playback singer of great eminence in some of the most historic film songs... now silent...RIP."

Singer Bappi Lahiri said Begum's death was a huge loss to the industry, which is celebrating its 100 years in May. "She was one of the most senior singers and had a unique style of singing. Her 'Kajra Mohabbat Wala' was a super-duper hit and we still listen to that song. I am a big fan of her and wanted her to sing for 'Paanch Qaidi' but it did not happen somehow because she was in Delhi that time. I deeply regret her death," Lahiri told .

Film historian Raju Bharatan, who has been close to Begum's family, said the singer was a favourite of all the composers of her time.

"She and Noorjahaan were discovered by Ustad Ghulam Haider. He brought her to Mumbai. She sang extensively for Naushad and for C Ramchandra. She was a favourite of all the composers because she had a great personality and sense of humour. She had great stamina and was the number one playback singer before Lata Mangeshkar came. Her peak was from 1945 to 1955," Bharatan said.

Composer-singer Shankar Mahadevan said her voice will always be remembered.

"I had the big fortune of talking to her over phone four years ago. She blessed me for my work. I live with that moment. We will always remember her through her songs."

Director Madhur Bhandarkar tweeted, "Shamshad Begum can truly be call the Indian nightingale. She'll be immortal because of her songs. RIP."

Ram Gopal Varma apologises to senior Marathi actor

Just the other day, Ram Gopal Varma incurred the wrath of a Bombay High Court Judge for refusing to return the money he owes Reliance Media Works (RMW) Ltd. And now, the filmmaker has had to tender a written apology to senior Marathi actor, Dr Girish Oak, for allegedly using his voice for the promos of 'Satya 2' without his consent. And it wasn't before the Shiv Sena Chitrapat Sena (film unit of the Shiv Sena) helmed by another Marathi actor, Adesh Bandekar, intervened, and threatened Varma with dire consequences, that the director relented.

This is how it all panned out. After announcing the sequel to his 1998 blockbuster Satya, Varma called several actors for an audition, asking them to deliver some of the dialogues from his upcoming film. Dr Oak was one of them, and returned after his voice audition, hopeful he would get a call from Varma's production house. Apparently, in the meantime, Varma used Dr Oak's voice sample for promos of the sequel, which he uploaded on You Tube, and even some trailers of the film, without informing the actor of his actions.

When Dr Oak found out about the videos, he called up Varma's office, only to get no reply. The actor recalled his experience saying, "I just called to ask them how they could use my voice without my consent, but they didn't reply. They treated me shabbily and I was very hurt and upset." However, things are very different now, according to Dr Oak. "Varma is now offering me money and credit for my voice. But I don't want money for it. I want my dignity back," he said.

When Bandekar (President of the Shiv Sena Chitrapat Sena) heard about the incident, he tried to get in touch with Varma but wasn't successful. He again visited Varma's office, this time with Dr Oak and members of the Chitrapat Sena in tow, but Varma left his office without meeting them. Ultimately, they told Varma he wouldn't be allowed to shoot in Maharashtra if he didn't make amends. Bandekar even appealed the filmmaker to tender an apology to such a senior actor as Dr Oak. "At the time, Varma was ready to pay Dr Oak, but we insisted on a written apology and finally, he submitted it on his company (Dreamforce Enterprises) letter head to Dr Oak," said Bandekar.

Shahrukh & Deepika watch IPL while it pours in Munnar

The lead stars of `Chennai Express' have been literally soaking in the sights and sounds of Kerala. After shooting in Goa, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone spent the last five days shooting for portions of two songs for their upcoming film with Kerala as the backdrop. The team shot for four days in Munnar before moving to Alappuzha on Monday for a day's shoot.

"The shoot in Munnar, though, was tough as it was raining. We couldn't shoot on two of the proposed four days because of the downpour," says a source present on location. The break, however, proved to be lucky for the two who, along with director Rohit Shetty, used the time to catch up on the ongoing IPL matches.

Unfortunately, the shooting schedule in Munnar had a lot more disruptions other than rain, says our source. "The roads are narrow, and getting 14 trucks of shoot equipment across was a challenge. Add to that the holiday crowd in the hills. There were always people wanting to click pictures with the stars. Shah Rukh was most accommodating. He posed with all of them. He also tried to learn a couple of Malayalam words while he was here. He tried one different Malayali dish every day," reveals our source.

Pakistan blacks out Shah Rukh, Akshay Kumar

Distributors and exhibitors in Pakistan have abandoned Shah Rukh Khan-starrer 'Chennai Express' and Akshay Kumar-starrer 'Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai - 2'. Both were slated to release on the day of Eid, August 8, in the country. The reason being cited is that Pakistani filmmakers want four of their films- 'Josh', 'Ishq Khuda', 'War' and 'Mera Naam Afridi' - to get more visibility than the Indian films.

Leading distributor Abdul Rashid, who controls a large section of the distribution chain across the border, and has been in touch with the producers of Chennai Express and Once Upon..., UTV and Balaji, respectively, communicated the decision to the two production houses.

Expressing disappointment with the developments, a source said, "Theatres in Pakistan generate maximum revenue from Hindi films. So it is really sad that this time, they did a volteface. UTV and Balaji tried reasoning with the filmmakers, but to no avail."

According to trade sources, Pakistan's blackout of these two films will lead to an estimated loss to the tune of Rs 20 crore. When contacted, Abdul Rashid told TOI, "Yes, we are not releasing Chennai Express and Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai - 2 in Pakistan. Our government wants to protect the interests of the Pakistan film fraternity."

He also added,"We don't mind rescheduling the two films to August 15. But piracy would have reduced the business prospects of the two films by then." Admitting that exhibitors would stand to gain by accommodating the two big-ticket films, Rashid however said, "We cannot overrule our government's decision."

Neither UTV nor Balaji were willing to comment on the development.

DD gives indie filmmakers a slot

Indie filmmakers finally have something to rejoice over. A few months ago, led by 'My Brother Nikhil's director Onir, 52 independent filmmakers from across the country, representing 11 regional languages, had filed a petition requesting the Information and Broadcasting ministry to save independent (indie) cinema. The filmmakers had also been involved in extensive discussions with the ministry and Prasar Bharti over finding a slot on Doordarshan to air their films - many of which are National Award winners. All of this seems to have had an impact, for Doordarshan (DD) has now declared that it will create slots to air the films of these filmmakers.

Says Onir, "This is very good news. Something is being done for us, after years of struggle. It was following an article in TOI that the DG of Doordarshan, Tripurari Sharan, called me and said that he has had a discussion with the Prasar Bharti CEO, Jawahar Sircar, and that DD has decided to open up slots for screening our films. He said they will also be screening films made by the NFDC (National Film Development Corporation) and CFSI (Children's Film Society, India). Screening our films was one of the biggest issues - imagine, even last year's Miss Lovely, which got a lot of appreciation worldwide, has still not been screened in India. We plan to hold a press conference in Delhi soon to thank everyone and the ministry."

Sharan explains, "Actually, all this about us not supporting our filmmakers is a misconception. We have always been showing National Award films on our channel; even now, at 12 on Sundays, we have retrospectives of classics. But this is not an automatic process. From their side too, the rights to air have to be offered to us. We'd find it very hard to come by films. We had started this 11pm Saturday night slot, and then had to close it because of non availability of films. But now we have widened the scope so as to be able to increase the frequency of the slots, and we will call this segment The Best of Indian Cinema. This will show not only all National Award-winning films since 2000, but also those under the Indian Panorama section. Also, all films that get selected in the 16 film festivals across the globe that are listed under our schedule will also be eligible for screening. This will also include all regional films, which is why it will be a must for these filmmakers to subtitle their films in English."
The time slot is 10pm for now, but the days of the week and the frequency need to be worked out - the policy has just been cleared by the board, so how many slots, whether it should be weekly, or fortnightly, all this has to be worked out. "Also, we need to make it a commercially viable proposition, and have to plan how to grab eyeballs," points out Sharan. Also, the rules and codicils applicable for the categories of films that can be shown on the national channel will apply. That means only those films certified U/A by the CBFC can be shown, and this is what the filmmakers are grumbling about.
"That is another issue we plan to take up eventually. Why not create an 11pm slot as well, since many of these films are certified A? Now, if a child is watching TV at 11pm, it is a problem of parenting, not of the channel airing content not appropriate for the child," opines Onir. Adds Ashvin Kumar, two of whose films, both on the Kashmir issue, have been given an A certificate by the CBFC, "This is a good move, and we welcome it, but why doesn't DD come out with a clear set of rules? It's been two weeks since the announcement, but still, no one knows what exactly it means. There are rumours and insinuations. Filmmakers are asking each other, will short films be shown? If yes, then what about documentaries? Are they included or not? Also, if Acertified films cannot be shown, that's most of the films out of this ambit already. The CBFC must really be taken into account. What business do they have to give a documentary an 'A'? Aisa kya hai usme? Any issue-based film, they give an A. One cannot fight for every film till the Supreme Court, like Anand Patwardhan (see box). Why can't DD, like broadcasters in other countries, buy the rights from us, give us the money, and get the Censor Board compliance itself?"
While all this needs to be worked out, many of the filmmakers are also elated about the rights amount being almost tripled by DD. Not only that, DD has also made policy changes in the way the rights will be bought. "Earlier, it was 8 lakh for a Swarna Kamal film, and 5 lakh for a Rajat Kamal film. But now, any film selected, if it is premiering on DD, will get 25 lakh, and if it's already been premiered elsewhere, and is only being screened on DD, will get 15 lakh," clarifies Sharan.
"This is good, but of course, it is completely another thing that applying to DD itself is a nightmare. You have to go through a dalaal, because one cannot sit there for days on end figuring out the intricacies of applying. And the dalaal charges 10%. So if one gets 25 lakhs for a film, that's 2.5 lakhs for that guy," reveals a filmmaker, on condition of anonymity.
The Anand Patwardhan case Fourteen films of Anand Patwardhan have challenged censorship rulings in India's courts. But his longest fight was perhaps for the film Father, Son And Holy War. Almost 11 years after it was made, Father, Son and Holy War was telecast on Doordarshan in 2006, after the Supreme Court ordered the national broadcaster to screen it without cuts. Father, Son and Holy War is a twohour, two-part documentary critique of the male psyche and its relationship with communal violence, set against a narrative of the communal riots in Mumbai after the destruction of the BabriMasjid in 1992, and the serial bomb blasts that shook the city a couple of months later. The film won two National Awards in 1996 and several international awards.
The film first ran into trouble in 1998, when DD refused to show it. On July 20, 2006, a two judge bench of the SC saw the film, and then, on August 25, 2006, in a landmark judgment, they upheld the High Court order to telecast the film without cuts. They went so far as to pass strictures against DD and the Prasar Bharati, reprimanding the broadcaster for finding "flimsy excuses" time and again not to telecast Patwardhan's film. The court had said, "This in our view is highly irrational and is a blatant violation of the right guaranteed under Article 19 (1) (a) of the Constitution (fundamental right to freedom of speech and expression)... We are shocked by the observation of the Prasar Bharati that "the film is not suitable due to unsatisfactory production quality and the film has nothing specific to convey..." This behaviour of DD would justify us in stating that DD is being dictated by rules of malafides and arbitrariness in taking decisions with regard to the telecast of the Respondent's films... In our view it would not be proper to deny telecast of an award-winning documentary merely on the ground that part II of it is certified as 'A' by the Censor Board." The court also ordered DD to telecast the film within eight weeks of this ruling, and on October 8, DD complied with the order.
Says Patwardhan, "Some films are bound to get an A because of their subjects, like a film on AIDS or childbirth, for example. Does that mean you will withhold the film from the general public? And if at all such a slot is being created, fiction and documentaries must be kept at par. Documentaries must be given priority, because they touch the burning issues of the country. Also, documentary has no other mode of visibility whatsoever."

You can't repeat the success of any movie: Mahesh Bhatt on 'Aashiqui'

Written By Unknown on Senin, 22 April 2013 | 21.44

In a departure from the original musical blockbuster "Aashiqui" which had an erotic-thriller component, Director-producer Mahesh Bhatt is slotting the upcoming sequel " Aashiqui 2" as a family entertainer.

"After the successful run of Aashiqui in 1991 and in following years due to repeat runs at theatres and on TV and the music ruling the chart for years, we must make a departure from the previous genre," Bhatt told .

"Aashiqui 2" needed the departure as the audience has changed and a whole new generation now flock to multiplexes for wholesome entertainers, Bhatt said after a promo meet.

"'Aashiqui' was a cult movie. It will sound cliche if you say you want to reach that level. You can't repeat the success of any movie. So let's call it another movie, with a fresh cast, a whole new look, a whole new content and a rocking music director (Jeet Ganguly) who is a household name in Bengal and also making his mark in Mumbai," he said.

"'Aashiqui 2' ushers in the glorious golden period of cinema... the phase of films like 'Abhimaan'. It rekindles the feel of the '70s and '80s -- which celebrated middle class values -- and seeks to bring back that kind of cinema. But it's set in the contemporary world," he said.

On the reason behind casting Aditya Roy Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor, Bhatt said, "You cannot repeat Rahul Roy and Anu Agarwal in the present age 'Aashiqui'. Can you? For the simple, emotional flick high on adrenalin, we needed two fresh faces in the lead as well as in music," he said.

Stating that all the tracks of "Aashiqui" like 'Nazar ke samney' were his favourites, Music director Jeet Ganguly said he was hooked to the music created by Nadeem Shravan when he heard it for first time at a young age.

"Once Mr Mahesh Bhatt approached me for 'Aashiqui 2', I stopped listening to those tracks. That was needed to impart freshness to the music," Ganguly said.

"As 'Aashiqui 2' songs like Tum Hi Ho and Sunn Raha Hai are topping the charts, I hope this will also strike a chord," he said on the music of the Mohit Suri directed film that releases on April 26.

I still have a lot of dreams to fulfill: Hema Malini

Actress turned politician Hema Malini, who was in Gujarat on Saturday to perform at a classical dance event, looked a little tired after landing in the state. But it was hard to miss the spark in her eyes while talking about her association with Gujarat.

"I had come to Vadodara last December for election campaigns, but otherwise, I haven't got a chance to visit Vadodara in recent times. And it's a different kind of feeling altogether when you visit an art-loving state like Gujarat as an artist. I was very happy when I was asked to do a ballet with my troupe based on the theme of Radha and Krishna and it's great that the proceeds from the event will be used for a noble cause." says Malini.

She adds, "While shooting for the film Bhai Ho To Aisa (it released in 1972), I had stayed in Vadodara for more than a couple of weeks. It was an absolute delight to shoot at the Laxmi Vilas Palace and I still remember how grand it is! Tab bahot chhoti thi main. We had a lot of fun."

Predictably, she also batted for Narendra Modi as Prime Minister. "It's always a pleasure to come to Gujarat and the way the state is flourishing under Modi's leadership is truly commendable. He is an able administrator and if he gets a chance, I am sure he will do a great job as the Prime Minister." she says.

The yesteryear 'dream girl' didn't seem to be in a chatty mood and wasn't very forthcoming when asked about the details of her upcoming projects. However, she said, "I have a long way to go and there are still so many dreams that I want to fulfil! I am planning to make a few television serials, and will continue making movies as well. Besides, I want to develop an institute and teach kids about classical dance."

In the same breath, this accomplished Bharatnatyam dancer adds, "I believe that classical dance needs to be taught to children at a young age. It helps in overall personality development, allows them to gradually get to know about our rich traditions and ensures a beautiful spiritual growth. Ab Bollywood dance seekh ke to spiritual growth nahi hone wala, isn't it? Besides, you can learn Bollywood dances merely by watching as well."

I am still madly in love with Sridevi: Boney Kapoor

Filmmaker Boney Kapoor seemed to be in a candid mood on Friday when he shared his "love story" with his actress wife Sridvei and confessed that it was love at first sight for him. He says he is still mad about her.

"I fell in love with Sri (Sridevi) when I watched her Tamil film during the late 1970s. After watching her film, I wanted to know more about her," Kapoor told reporters while sharing the inside story, which has been kept under wraps so far, much to the embarrassment of his wife.

"I had especially gone to Chennai at her house to meet her, but she was shooting in Singapore. I returned to Mumbai disheartened," he added.

He was accompanying Sridevi, who was in the capital to attend an event.
Looking beautiful in a red embroidered sari, the Chandni actress made futile attempts to stop Kapoor from divulging more details about their romance.

But he continued and said: "After some time, I watched Sri's Solva Sawan (1979). I desperately wanted to meet her. I wanted her to work with me. One day I went to meet her on the set (of a movie). Sri is an introvert. She doesn't talk to strangers. She talked to me in half broken English and Hindi and just said that her mother takes care of her professional matters."

Kapoor, who married Sri in 1996, said when he met his future mother-in-law, he offered Mr India and Sridevi's mother asked for Rs.10 lakh to sign the film.

"When she asked for Rs.10 lakh, I offered her Rs.11 lakh because I wanted to be close to Sri. Her mother was completely impressed with me. Sri was the highest paid actresses of that time and she later confessed to me that she thought I was a crazy producer who was offering more than what she had asked for," said Kapoor.

It was a "dream come true" for him when Sridevi acted in his production venture Mr. India. In the super hit sci-fi comedy, directed by Shekhar Kapur, Kapoor roped in his younger brother to play the male lead opposite Sridevi.

"I made sure she was comfortable on the set (of Mr. India). I personally took care of everything. There were no vanity vans at that time, but I arranged for a separate make-up room for her. Gradually, she felt comfortable with me."

Later Sridevi starred in his films like Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja and Judaai.

Kapoor was so madly in love with her that when Sridevi was filming Chandni in Switzerland, he had gone to Switzerland especially to see her "because I wanted to be close to her".

"After coming back, I told my first wife (Mona Shourie) what I had felt for Sri," he said and added when Sridevi's) mother died, "I was there with her all the time."

"When she finished shooting for Lamhe, her father passed away. We came close to each other slowly. I supported her throughout.

"Even she was there for me always. She is not only a talented actress, but a fabulous wife and mother. She still lives in her own world and doesn't get into controversies. Even after so many years of our marriage, I am still madly in love with her."

The couple has two daughters.

Sonam essays the role of a student from Benaras who comes to Delhi to join Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in the love story, directed by Anand L Rai.

"I am still a newcomer and he has worked a many more years than I have in Indian film Industry. It is his debut Bollywood project but I wouldn't call him a new comer. I think he is one of the most brilliant actors and he is definitely better actor than me. I feel like a novice when I work with him," Sonam told .

"Ranjhaana" will hit theatres on June 28, 2013.

The 27-year-old actress started her acting career with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Saawariya" in 2007 opposite Ranbir Kapoor. The film did not do well at the box-office but Sonam was noticed for her screen presence.

Sonam says her goal now is to be a part of interesting projects that would satisfy the actress in her.

The actress is quite busy with her back-to-back projects including "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag", "Khubsoorat" remake and filmmaker Nupur Asthana's Yash Raj project.

"I don't shoot two films at the same time. I finish one character and get into another character because I change my look for every film. It's difficult but I enjoy doing that," she said.

Sonam would be reprising the role played by Rekha in the remake of "Khubsoorat" and the actress is ready to face comparisons with the legendary diva.

"I am glad that I got the opportunity to play a character that is so vibrant and alive. I am Anil Kapoor's daughter so I am always compared with legends. It is a part and parcel of my life. The film is not the same story at all. We have just taken the spirit of the girl. It is the spirit of the character that I want to capture," she said.

MMS tremors hit Mona and Vidyut's relationship

It was about a fortnight ago that Mona Singh's allegedly doctored MMS surfaced. Now according to sources, her relationship with Vidyut Jamwal has hit a rough patch because of the scandal.

What gave wings to the rumours was Mona's conspicuous absence from the private screening of Vidyut's big film, Commando, which released last week.

According to a source, Mona and Vidyut were absolutely smitten with each other and were even seriously considering of tying the knot. Post the scandal, it seems the relationship is not the same anymore and it looks like Vidyut might be doing a bit of re-thinking.

However, a friend of the couple said: "The scandal has obviously affected the couple, but Vidyut is too much of a gentleman to let her go at this juncture of time. It could be that Mona herself has decided to give it a break for a while, considering that she is going through tremendous emotional turmoil."

Although, both Mona and Vidyut were unavailable to comment, a source insists that all's well between the two and said that the rumours are being spread with malicious intent. "Looks like people are envious of the fact that both Mona and Vidyut are doing so well in their respective fields," he said.

Kangna looks for logic in Gupta’s film

Kangna Ranaut is looking for logic in the unlikeliest of places - in a guns 'n goonda Bollywood film. The actress, who has been in the news for reportedly dissociating herself from Shootout at Wadala, has been telling her friends that she is upset with director Sanjay Gupta making 'unreasonable' demands from her character in the film.

When TOI probed into the matter, it emerged that the actress was expected to do a special song with John Abraham and Sophie Chaudhry in the film. While that did not at all sound like an 'unreasonable demand', a friend of the petite actress had to say this: "Kangna put her foot down on the song and dance number because she believed it was not in sync with her character in the film. She plays a Maharashtrian widow. The director wanted her to do a jig while reminiscing about her past. And that too in dare-bare outfits! Does that make any sense?"

Her friend also alleges that this song was not part of the original script, and was thought up much later, to spice things up. Reports suggest Kangna and Sanjay Gupta could never arrive at consensus over this song, prompting the former to stay away from all the promotional activities of the film so far.

While producers Balaji Motion Pictures declined to comment on the issue, a friend of Gupta called up to say: "Kangna is the heroine of the film and she should stand up for it. But she is just being difficult. She knew right from day one, that this song was integral to the film. Initially, she had no issues with it, we wonder why she found it so objectionable later. If she is not promoting the film, it's her loss. Every actor in the film has come forward to steer it, only Kangna has chosen to stay away."

While Kangna hasn't attended any of the film's events held over March and April, Gupta retaliated by giving her well-attended birthday bash on March 24 the royal ignore.

Akshay Kumar's next film on Dada Kondke

Based on the biography by Anita Padhye, the film is about the actor who ruled Marathi cinema in the 70s

Akshay Kumar and Ashwini Yardi's next is a film on Dada Kondke, the actor who captured the imagination of Marathi cinema goers in the late 70s and 80s with films that were loved and criticised for their excessive double entendre and sexual innuendo.

The duo has bought the rights of Kondke's biography titled Ekta Jeev, authored by Anita Padhye.

While Akshay and Ashwini were unavailable for comment, Padhye confirmed the development and said: "The film will be based on my book, which was written in 1999 on the basis of my interactions with Kondke, recorded in 80 audio cassettes of 90 minutes each."

Kondke may have been the bumbling simpleton in striped shorts in most of his films - Pandu Hawaldar, Ram Ram Gangaram, Andheri Raat Mein Diya Tere Haath Mein (Hindi) - with his one-liners and comic gestures, but in real life, he wasn't a happy man.

"It's an interesting idea to make a film on such a man," pointed out a source, adding, "It's a matter of time before Akshay and Ashwini make an official announcement."

Amitabh Bachchan numb over rape news, says jail not best solution

The news of the rape of a five-year-old girl, who is now battling for life, has left Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan numb. He says people who indulge in such heinous crimes should be exposed in public for proper justice.

"The horror of the latest crime of rape and then attempt to kill a 5-year-old little girl, leaves me numb and without voice! These evil beings are not fit to be called animals... even animals have certain codes of conduct," the 70-year-old posted on his blog.

The girl was abducted on April 15 and held hostage in east Delhi's Gandhi Nagar for over two days, according to police.

"What is happening to us as a society, a community? Why and how are we succumbing to these atrocious and ghastly acts... who are these people and where do they come from... which mother gave birth to them, and how were they brought up... in which environment," he further posted.

Big B also feels that a jail sentence is not the best solution for such criminals.

"Keeping them bound and confined shall not change them or their thinking... they need to be made examples of... they need to be shamed first publicly and then left to the public to deal them justice in which ever way they seem fit," he posted.

"There seems to be complete vacuousness in how the situation needs to be dealt with. No one seems to have solutions, or worse, preventions. We wait till a deed happens and then get active on how to deal with the situation... we have no mechanism to preempt a situation... whether it be a rape or a terrorist attack."

"We all are living in insecure times, where the fear of authority and the call of discipline and awareness is non-existent. We live on love and fresh air... and we hope that what befalls tragically on others, shall not befall us," he further posted.

"I belong to Kanpur and have tried creating a space for myself in Mumbai, that was possible only because I believed in my dreams. It was like a battle field for me where I learned every day, without losing sight of my goal," says the handsome actor during his recent visit to Varanasi for the promotion of his film.

"I love breaking rules. I was asked by people to not begin my career in Bollywood with a negative role, but I followed my heart and the result was that for the first time in the history of Hindi cinema, an actor with a negative role was conferred with a best debut award," says he.

Vidyut, who vouches for action, is not worried about getting stereotyped. "This is what I want to do, I was born to do and I love to do. Action is an integral part of me and I will do action- romance, action-drama, whatever that involves action. In fact, I cannot think of cinema without action because I have been learning martial arts since I was three-years-old. I belong to a family who is into martial arts. I have films in hand because of my martial arts skills. I was so fascinated with action that I saw the Hollywood film Force nearly 27 times as a child! As far as acting goes, there is a myth that actors with big bodies can't act. But Van Damme and Sylvester Stallone prove that this is just a myth. As for me I will be seen in Tigmanshu Dhulia's Bullett Raja. I am part of the film because of my emoting skills and not just because of my action," he says.

While in Varanasi, Vidyut also demonstrated some action moves and gave self defence tips to women. "Women should also learn self-defence techniques, especially in the light of the gang-rape case in Delhi. An active mind can overpower even the toughest of bodies. So women should always be vigilant and react in a proper manner in any adverse situation. Women today are obsessed with getting slim but what is really important is to remain fit," he says in a lighter vein.
