'Acting with one's wife even more exciting'

TV actor Hiten Tejwani is joining the cast of Meri Aashiqui Tumse Hi, which stars his wife and actress Gauri Pradhan Tejwani. He is "excited" to work with his real life partner in the show.

Hiten and Gauri were the leading pair in Kutumb, which went on air in 2001, and after many years, they are sharing the screen space once again.

READ: Meri Aashiqui Tum Se Hi: Smriti Khanna in a love triangle in the TV show

"Any role for an actor is exciting, but acting with your (one's) wife is even more exciting. We'll be spending more time on the sets now. Earlier, we used to shoot on different locations, now we'll get to spend more time together," Hiten told IANS by phone from Mumbai.

When asked how the experience of Meri Aashiqui Tumse Hi will be different from Kutumb, the actor said: "Well, the characters are different. Also, when we were shooting 'Kutumb', we weren't married. But now we're married."

"When you are performing opposite to your wife, the comfort level is very high from the beginning. With other co-actors, it takes a little while to reach a certain comfort level."

The couple tied the knot in 2004 and welcomed twins, son Neevan and daughter Katya, in 2009.

Gauri had previously mentioned that she would like to work with her husband when she joined Meri Aashiqui Tumse Hi, and now that her wish has come true, she is pretty excited too.

Although Hiten and Gauri's five-year-old twins aren't allowed to watch TV, the actor is willing to bend the rules for this show.

On being asked how his children would react on seeing them together on the screen, he said: "They will be happy to see us together. Actually, they are not allowed to watch TV as of now, but we will let them see a scene or two where we are together."

Although Hiten's schedule is busy with Meri Aashiqui Tumse Hi, the actor is willing to take up new projects.

"I'll be busy with 'Meri Aashiqui Tumse Hi', but let's see what happens. Talks are going on. If something really nice turns up and I have time, then I'll do it," he said.

Independence: Sonam Kapoor is the Kapoor girl, but she is an independent and confident girl. In an interview with TOI, Sonam said, " "I only worked for past few years. I don't do too many things at the same time. I do very classy things as suppose to 'mass-y' things in life. Last nine years, I am working and didn't take a rupee from my father. To maintain my lifestyle I couldn't take holiday in past few years. First time I made enough money to take holiday and have saved for a vacation," added the Kapoor daughter. The Kapoor girl revealed that her father Anil Kapoor gives more importance to her career than her relationships. " My dad is cool and chilled out. He doesn't think it's important to marry early. For my dad it's about my career as he knows how important it is for me. He wants me to be a better actor and a better person and make great films. That's his ambition for me. When it comes to relationships it's all secondary. He doesn't pay much importance to it which is how I think parents in India should be. Parents should think about your growth as professional career rather than who are you going to get married to," said the actress.

On being asked about the changing situation of women in the industry, Sonam said, "I hope the condition of women changes in India. Bollywood is different. For me films are the reflection of what society is. The society needs to change and then films will change. Films and art don't dictate society, they reflect society. I am trying very hard in terms of small things, the way I conduct myself and talk to people. There are lot of heroines, who are prim and proper and are diplomatic. They don't want to give opinions and don't want to speak about anyone. In many ways, we are setting a wrong example for the girls and that's not a cool thing to do. The society should change," added Sonam.

Shahrukh Khan does not read reviews

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has confessed he stays away from reading film reviews and catches them only if they are funny.

"I don't read reviews (not taking away from the importance of reviews)," SRK told mediapersons here Wednesday.

"I have a sense of humour and most of the time my sense of humour is about how I can make fun of myself, about 70 percent of the time, and 30 percent of the time it is about making fun of others.

"But they take it very, very, seriously so I stopped doing it," he added

SRK was in town to celebrate the success of his latest release "Happy New Year."

"So, I do it just about myself and if it's a review I try and catch it only if it's funny. If it's serious about how filmmaking should be, I am really serious about filmmaking, so I don't really want to get into that," he said.

The Farah Khan-directed "Happy New Year", which released Oct 24, is yielding profits at the box office - it crossed Rs. 100 crore in the opening weekend itself. Produced by Shah Rukh's Red Chillies Entertainments Pvt. Ltd. (RCE), the film raked in Rs.108.86 crore.

Bigg Boss 8: Praneet says Gautam is negative

No battle plan survives contact with the enemy. Taking this thought forward the unpredictable house of Bigg Boss started a brand new morning with a classic 80's number, 'AajNaChodungaTujhe' which set the tone for the day.

During the day, Bigg Boss announced new captaincy elections and asked the housemates to volunteer their names with legitimate reasons.

Gautam was the first one to volunteer, hence becoming the first contender to compete in the race to become the next captain of the house. Other housemates had to then decide on one contender who will stand up against Gautam. Upen was selected with group consensus.

Race for Captaincy task named, "Aaj Na Chodunga Tujhe" is launched with Upen and Gautam competing against each other. The task required both the contenders to choose two partners of their choice who will support them in the task. Upen selects Aarya and Ali while Gautam selects Puneet and Pritam. On the battle ground, both Upen and Gautam are supposed to hold one black pole each, given to them, while the selected partners would try to detach the opposite contender from the pole and drag him towards the given white line. The person who will be dragged towards the white line first, will lose.

READ: Bigg Boss 8: Sushant gets nominated thanks to Upen Patel

Before the task starts, Diandra, Praneet and Karishma were seen trying to manipulate Pritam so that he supports Upen's team. When Pritam asks Praneet as to what he should do, Praneet tells him that he knows Gautam is negative.

During the task, it takes Ali and Aarya just a few seconds to drag Gautam to the white line. Puneet is nervous to use his physical strength due to his previous tiff where he had hurt Gautam physically. As a result Upen wins the task and is announced as the new captain of the house.

A back stabbed Gautam is seen talking to himself post the task as to how Puneet could have done better but due to his fear of using his strength he did not perform well, little knowing that Puneet did what he did deliberately. Puneet is later seen telling his co-contestants that he did not play loyally with Gautam as he wanted Upen to become the captain.

Gautam is later seen confronting Puneet and Pritam about what had happened during the task. Puneet admits to Gautam that he could have done better but he didn't and therefore is guilty about it, smoothly getting away with the betrayal.

Upen then gathers all the housemates in the living area to discuss and reshuffle the house duties for the coming week letting people volunteer themselves as to what they will be comfortable doing, promising a peaceful and happy week ahead.

Will Upen be able to lead the housemates appropriately or no? Only time will tell.

Daily Soaps on TV: 5 most exploited clichés

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 29 Oktober 2014 | 21.44

/5-most-clichd-twists-on-tv-shows/5-most-clichs-twists-in-TV-shows/eventshow/28904695.cms

01

Hindi daily soaps are mostly criticized for their regressive writing and clichéd twists. These TV shows have been filling our heads with the same stories for a decade now and have earned the reputation of repeating plots over and over again. And since not everyone in the audience is as mindful of what they are watching, these cliché twists help the producers to keep the show alive and the audience hooked. Here's a list of the 5 most cliched twists on TV shows.

Rich boy falls in love with poor girl and vice-versa: This track is a smart survival strategy of TV show producers. It is the most tried and tested formula on the small screen. Love brings them together, while family and social rules keep them apart. The story usually starts with this ploy and it generates love, longing between the lovers. And while this is what gets the audience hooked to the show, it soon gets diverted to some other plot altogether.

02

Return from the dead: This is one of the most cliche sequence used in daily soaps. The trend of this twist was started by the queen of daily soaps - Ekta Kapoor and now other production houses seem to be blindly following it. Some of the popular examples of this track are Mihir Virani in Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Roli in Sasural Simar Ka and Ammaji in Laado

03

Double role: The plot of double roles is quite a hit in Bollywood, thanks to films like Ram Aur Shyam, Seeta Aur Geeta, Chaalbaaz, Judwaa and Rowdy Rathore to name a few. It has always worked for Hindi films. However, on the small screen it has become another cliché twist to stretch a daily soap. Whether it is Madhubala's track focussing on RK and KRK, Pavitra Rishta's grandmother and grand-daughter or Uttaran's mother-daughter track, everyone seems to be following each other.

04

Memory Loss: "I am sorry, par inki yaadaasht jaa chuki hai." Memory loss is one cliché twist which has come directly from the hit films of the '70s and was soon picked up on the small screen. It has been done so many times on TV shows that it has become a done to death concept now. The shows which have tried to boost up their numbers by using this track are Kahinn Toh Hoga, Saat Phere, Sanjog Se Bani Sangini, Sasural Genda Phool, Bade Achhe Lagte Hain, Pavitra Rishta and Chotti Bahu to name a few.

05

Love triangle: The love triangle plot in daily soaps is mostly introduced as the need of the hour. No matter how melodramatic or conspiring a daily soap is, one cannot deny the fact that most of the daily soaps rely on romance and love triangles to usher in high TRPs. From Mandira's vicious means to break Tulsi and Mihir's jodi in Kyunki... to Sultan who trying to win over Madhu's love in Madhubala- Ek Ishq Ek Junoon, the love triangle track has always worked for daily soaps.

Films like Kick and the Dhoom series prove that a heist film is mostly a safe bet at the box-office. Also considering the fact that Happy New Year is a multi- starrer and is SRK and Farah's film together on the big screen after a long time, it has become a family entertainer replete with comedy, romance, drama and action.

Marvel to come up with 9 new superhero movies

Marvel on Tuesday unveiled plans for nine new superhero movies through 2019, expanding a universe anchored on blockbuster franchises including The Avengers and Captain America.

In a surprise announcement, the studio revealed there will be a new two-part Avengers sequel in 2018-2019 -- on top of one already scheduled for next year to follow the record-breaking 2012 original.

READ: Martin Donovan joins Marvel's 'Ant-Man' star cast

The studio also named its first African American solo lead actor -- Chadwick Boseman, who will play the title role Black Panther, due out in 2017.

And it confirmed a release date for the sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy, which is so far the top-grossing film of 2014.

Here is a list of the nine movies, in chronological order based on release date:

- Captain America: Civil War - May 6, 2016

- Dr Strange - November 4, 2016

- Guardians of the Galaxy 2 - May 5, 2017

- Thor: Ragnarok - July 28, 2017

- Black Panther - November 3, 2017

- Avengers: Infinity War, Part 1 - May 4, 2018

- Captain Marvel - July 6, 2018

- Inhumans - November 2, 2018

- Avengers: Infinity War, Part 2 - May 3, 2019

So-called 'tent pole' movies -- big money-making films that are often sequels to tried-and-tested blockbuster franchises -- are increasingly important to studios as the movie-watching experience fragments into theatergoers and others viewing online or elsewhere.

The first Avengers movie and last year's Iron Man 3 are among the top five grossing films ever, together earning more than $2.7 billion worldwide to date, according to Marvel.

The Avengers -- in which a band of superheroes helps save Earth from mythical prankster Loki and an alien army -- opened in North America in May 2012 with a staggering $207.4 million in ticket sales -- the biggest US debut of all time.

James Cameron's Avatar remains the biggest grossing film of all time worldwide, with some $2.8 billion in takings, followed by Titanic on $2.2 billion and The Avengers on $1.5 billion, according to the Box Office Mojo website.

SRK's 100% success ratio with Diwali releases

/shah-rukh-khans-diwali-releases-100-success-ratio/eventshow/44957808.cms

01

Shah Rukh Khan's association with the festive season of Diwali goes back a long way. Ever since the actor tasted success in 1993 with his first Diwali release, Baazigar, Diwali has been lucky for him. Let's take a look at some of Shah Rukh Khan's successful Diwali releases.

Happy New Year: Shah Rukh Khan has once again proved why he's called the baadshah of Bollywood. After setting records at box-office last year with Chennai Express, Shah Rukh Khan's Happy New Year has already started creating new bench marks which seems difficult for others to chase. Shah Rukh has once again struck gold at the box-office with his latest hit Happy New Year which has now joined the list of fastest Rs 100 crore Bollywood films. With this, Happy New Year has also become the 11th successful film of SRK to be released during Diwali.

Baazigar: Shah Rukh Khan, who has proved his versatility with various roles, changed the way people looked at Bollywood heroes with his role in Baazigar. This Abbas-Mustan thriller was 'inspired' from A Kiss Before Dying. The film which went on to become Shah Rukh Khan's first major Diwali hit was turned down by many A-listers as the role was of a negative hero who commits three murders. Actors like Salman Khan and Anil Kapoor declined the role as they thought it would work against their on-screen image. But what was Salman and Anil's loss, proved to be Shah Rukh's gain.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge: The fact that Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is still running at Maratha Mandir even after 19 years of its release speaks volumes about the film. In DDLJ, Bollywood got one of its most sizzling jodis of Bollywood - Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan. The film changed the life of all the people who were associated with it. It is till date, one of the most successful films of Aditya Chopra, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. According to Anupama Chaopra's book Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge: The Making Of A Blockbuster, Shah Rukh did not want to do DDLJ in the beginning. He thought it was the typical lover boy role. In fact Aditya Chopra had to convince him to do it. There is a poster in Adi's office signed by Shah Rukh that reads, 'Thank you for making me the star that I am today.' No points for guessing that DDLJ was indeed a Diwali release.

Dil To Pagal Hai: The new-age love story, directed by the master of romance - Yash Chopra, is still fresh in the minds of the audience for its amazing music and Madhuri Dixit, Shah Rukh Khan and Karisma Kapoor's glamorous looks. Dil To Pagal Hai, which revolved around the world of dance and theatre, was a hit with the audience. The music album of Dil To Pagal Hai was the biggest hit of the year. In fact its music sold even better than that of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. The film was the second biggest success of the year on the box-office and it soon went on to acquire the status of the classic Bollywood love story. Dil To Pagal Hai is, as expected, a Diwali release.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai: Another milestone of Shah Rukh Khan's career came in the year 1998 during Diwali. The film also launched Shah Rukh Khan's best friend Karan Johar as a director. This film again was a love triangle between Rahul, Tina and Anjali played by Shah Rukh, Rani Mukerji and Kajol respectively. Everything about the film - from its look to the songs - were new. The songs just didn't sound good but even looked great, complete with Farah Khan's stylish choreography, picture perfect locations and the hi-gloss MTV-style packaging. The film was extremely successful in India and abroad. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was the first Bollywood film to enter the UK Cinema Top Ten. The look and feel of this 1998 classic was drawn from the popular Riverdale High School from Archie comics. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was Shah Rukh's biggest Diwali hit after DDLJ

06

Mohabbatein: This was Aditya Chopra's second venture with Shah Rukh Khan after the iconic Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaayenge. The film also marked the comeback of the legendary Amitabh Bachchan. Though the film was criticised by certain section of the media for its length (3-hour, 26-minute), it managed to a ring a bell at the box-office. Mohabbatein also created quite a buzz as the film brought two superstars Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan of different generation together. It became the second highest grossing film of the year domestically and the highest grossing film overseas that year and was thus declared a blockbuster.

Veer-Zaara: Veer-Zaara is a saga of love, separation, courage and sacrifice. This film marked the return of Yash Chopra to direction after a gap of seven years after directing Dil To Pagal Hai which also starred Shah Rukh Khan. The cross-border love story between Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta's characters moved many to tears. The film eventually became the top-grossing Bollywood film of the year at both Indian and the international box-office. It also earned all the major awards of that year including the Most Popular Film award at the National Film Awards and the Best Movie award at the annual Filmfare Awards, among others. With Veera-Zaara, Yash Chopra once again proved why he is called the king of romance.

Don: Shah Rukh Khan, who emerged as one of the biggest stars of Bollywood after Amitabh Bachchan, was mostly compared to the latter. So, when Farhan Akhtar decided to cast Shah Rukh to reprise the role of Vijay in the remake of Don in 2006, all eyes were on SRK-Farhan as to whether they will be able to pull it through. Even though the film received a mixed response from everyone around, Don was able to make a profit at the ticket windows. Well, looking at the success of Don which released during Diwali we can surely say that Shah Rukh on Diwali can never go wrong.

09

Om Shanti Om: Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan, who worked together on many films as actor and choreographer eventually decided to make movies together. After the super success of Main Hoon Na they together did something much bigger and better in the form of Om Shanti Om. The film which revolved around the film industry was a massive hit at the box-office. With Om Shanti Om, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya (which launched the careers of Sonam Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor) also hit the cinema halls but as we all know Diwali belongs to Shah Rukh Khan his film Om Shanti Om gave Saawariyaa the run for its money.

Ra.One: When Shah Rukh decided to make an Indian science fiction superhero film Ra.One in 2011 directed by Anubhav Sinha, everyone waited with bated breath, However, this film was a major disappointment for all Shah Rukh fans. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Arjun Rampal and Kareena Kapoor, the film did good business making the most of the festive season. In this case also Shah Rukh's Diwali connection worked in his favour as the film minted good money.

After a disappointing run of his last few releases, Saif Ali Khan says he now wants to focus on making films that match his sensibilities.

The 44-year-old actor, who last worked in much criticised multi-starrer comedy 'Humshakals', says he would like to go back to making movies like 'Omkara' and 'Parineeta' again.

"I feel I lost touch with myself in recent times and I don't know why. I was listening to other people's conviction. I feel, it's the time to do what I believe in and stick to my conviction and sensibilities whether I do films like 'Parineeta', 'Omkara' or 'Hum Tum'.

"I would like to do such films again. I have generally been an erratic person by nature, which I am being bored off now. I want to be more consistent now and give things right amount of respect," Saif told in an interview.

The National-award winning actor next stars in 'Happy Ending', which is a spoof on romantic comedies.

Also starring Govinda, Ileana D'Cruz, Ranvir Shorey, Kalki Koechlin besides Preity Zinta and Kareena Kapoor in special appearances, the film is expected to hit theatres on November 21.

"It's a story about somebody who has a problem with commitment and love. It's a bit like a Woody Allen movie, a mature film. I am really proud that we made this film because it's a kind of spoof on romantic comedies," Saif said.

The actor, who is also co-producing the film, has teamed up with his 'Go Goa Gone' directors Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK as he feels his sensibilities match with the director duo.

"We three met during 'Go Goa Gone' and I really like the style of their working. The way they wrote my character in that film was really interesting.

"'Happy Ending' is a fresh film that Raj and DK have made. Our sensibilities match and we hope that we do lots of good work in the future as well," he said.

Changing face of Mumbai in Hindi cinema

Mumbai has been a backdrop for many films but its definition in these films has changed over the years.

The allure of the city of Mumbai as a subject of film scarcely evades film-makers even those who are below the age of 25. The recently concluded Mumbai Film Festival showcased twenty short films centring on Mumbai by young and promising film-makers below the age of 25. Slotted under a broad category Dimensions Mumbai," these short films explored various aspects of the city of Mumbai. Three films stood out in their representation of Mumbai and its people.

Bombay 70 made by Disha Randani, which bagged the best short film award at the festival, centres on failed attempts of a young man to live a dignified life. This young man has maligned the name of his esteemed grandfather. The city, which on crucial occasions can be cold and not-so-generous in accepting of its people, makes him happy and frustrated. He chooses music to vent out what the city has given him. The second best film award went to Unfit made by Srishti Jain. It deals with the experience of a man who comes from the Faizabad district of Uttar Pradesh to the city of dreams. It focuses on how the fast pace of life in the city is in complete contrast with the character's earlier life. The third film which received special mention by the jury at the festival is Selfie made by Ramchandra Gaonkar. Selfie is the story of two men who find themselves in similar circumstances and how one slips deeper and deeper into the tendency to doubt his ability to deal with the circumstances and how another copes with the similar circumstances confidently.

These three films look at Mumbai in three exclusive perspectives: insider, outsider and existential. These are a few of the myriad perspectives the city has offered film-makers and other artists. It seems that the affair of film-makers with the city of Mumbai is an unending one. Mumbai is a muse that never fails its creative artists. She dogs you, ensnares you, engulfs you and retains in you what you need and purges you of that exalted sense of life. More so, it seems that the more you peel off the layers, this city acquires as it jostles for survival in that tight little space of tranquility, it becomes more and more captivating in every aspect. In fact, Hindi cinema owes a lot to this city. After shifting its base from Lahore to Bombay (Now Mumbai), the city has provided a wide range of fascinating gallery of films which have touched us in ways more than one. These films have made us think, re-think and assess the way we live and treat people around us.

For a long time, Mumbai has been the El Dorado of India. Though today, as newer cities are emerging, this point of view is debatable. In the 1950s, for film-makers, the city served as a door to the World. The first film that showed the streets of Mumbai was Taxi Driver. Made in 1954 by the progressive Chetan Anand, it took the viewers to the long streets of Mumbai and brought them closer to the world they lived in. Rafique Baghdadi, a veteran film critic and historian on Mumbai, says, "In those days, most film-makers would use heavy camera to shoot. Chetan Anand got hold of a light camera and went on the streets of Mumbai and shot Taxi Driver." In Taxi Driver, the city of Mumbai was a character. It was about a budding singer who is helped by a sensitive and large-hearted taxi driver in meeting her mentor who turns out to be a man with criminal connections. It turns out that she starts staying with the taxi driver and they fall in love. This is one of the most realistic portrayals of Mumbai. However, it was in 1955 that ace film-maker Raj Kapoor's Shree 420 depicted what the city of dreams and opportunities can be. The film provided a template for many films in the years to come. A simpleton, Raju comes from an unknown idealistic place to Mumbai and the city in its enticing splendour of money and fame changes him into a person he hates.

Subsequently, there came a series of films in which Mumbai played an important character. The only factor that came in way of classifying these films as pure representation of Mumbai and its culture was the language spoken in these films. The characters would be placed in Mumbai milieu but the language they spoke would not be bambaiyya. They would speak in Urdu, Hindustani or sometimes a Hindi which was distinct to their native. For instance, in the 1954 released film Aar Paar directed by Guru Dutt, the hero spoke Hindi with the dialect of Madhya Pradesh. Abrar Alvi was once quoted as saying, "The hero uses the word Yaar which was so common in the way Hindi was spoken in Madhya Pradesh. It defined the geography from which he came from."

It was only in the middle of the 1970s that Mumbai as a character, its culture and language began emerging in Hindi films. The film Deewar, which was released in 1975, written by Salim-Javed depicted Mumbai, its people and its language in a faithful manner to a large extent. It went straight into the plight of Mumbai's poor man and his challenges. Besides this, Basu Chatterjee's films such as Rajnigandha (1974), Choti Si Baat (1976) and Baaton Baaton Main (1979) also provided a foray into the way urban middle class of Mumbai made a living. It presented the sensitive and delicate part of the city, which was not as cold and distant to the middle class as to the outsider in the city.

Interestingly, in the late '70s, two films presented Mumbai's two extreme classes in a very realistic way. Muzzaffar Ali's film Gaman made in 1978 depicted the plight and struggles of an outsider who comes into the city to earn more and becomes a taxi driver. He however is disillusioned and is ensnared in the city. Saeed Akhtar Mirza's film Arvind Desai Ki Ajeeb Dastaan, released in 1978, presented the existential crisis of a son of rich Mumbai businessman who fails in his attempts to find meaning in his life. It is in this film the streets and the milieu of Mumbai has received its due importance.

The 1980s and 1990s were the decades where film and film-makers began deconstructing Mumbai in a deeper way. Be it the language, the clothes, the gestures and more importantly stories emerged from Mumbai itself. Saeed Akhtar Mirza's film Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyon Ata Hai released in 1980 went straight into the houses of Mumbai's Catholic people and spoke the language they spoke. Also Sai Paranjpe's film Katha that released in 1983 was about the middle class Mumbaikars who lived in chawls and dealt with each other's needs and expectations. Films that dealt with specific communities of Mumbai also got released in this period. Most notable of them is Vijaya Mehta's film Pestonjee which provided a closer look at the Parsi community of 1950s and 1960s of Mumbai.

In the late 1980s, when joblessness increased due to indefinite textile strike of 1982, the gap between the haves and haves-not widened considerably. It was then that the young men belonging to jobless mill workers took to nefarious activities and formed Mumbai's underworld. There came films which gave realistic portrayal of underworld, prostitution, corruption and other evils of the city. One of the early films in the late 1980s that focussed on lives of people of the street of Mumbai was Mira Nair's Salaam Bombay, released in 1988. This was followed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra's gritty crime drama Parinda which got released in 1989. It paved the way for realistic crime films in Hindi cinema in the years to come.

In the middle of 1990s, the language of the street of Mumbai began emerging in Hindi films in the most authentic way. The film Rangeela which was released in 1995 gave the viewers the flavour of Mumbai's language. Sanjay Chhel who co-wrote dialogues of Rangeela says, "Rangeela brought about the ethos of Mumbai. Here was the hero who spoke in the language which people in streets, shops and markets of Mumbai spoke. It was a lively way of expression without much sophistication and articulation." The film connected with the audience immensely. It was in the same year that Mani Ratnam's Bombay presented the destruction and sufferings of Mumbai in the backdrop of Mumbai riots of 1992-93 got released and met with critical acclaim.

In the late 1990s, however, there came a sea change in which Mumbai would be depicted in films. With the release of underworld film Satya in 1998, Hindi cinema again went into the interiors of Mumbai and showed us that gangsters are among us and they don't live in far-off inaccessible dark corners of the city. In the late 1990s also, there came a wave of films which catered to the Indian Diaspora and the presence of Mumbai and its people in Hindi cinema became lesser.

However, in early 2000s, Mumbai again reappeared in Hindi films. This time it was the elite part of Mumbai which got prominence. In 2001, with the release of the film Dil Chahta Hain, the camaraderie shown among friends grown up in posh localities of Mumbai came out fresh and was met with success. In the late 2000s, two films showed Mumbai in two extreme perspectives. In 2007, the film Ek Chalis Ki Last Local delighted the viewers from the rollercoaster experience of a young working call centre worker who, like many, benefited from the opening of the economy which made India an outsourcing hub, while in 2008 Nishikant Kamat's film Mumbai Meri Jaan showed the deep-seated fears, concerns, misconceptions and biases of Mumbaikars. Interestingly, at the end of the decade in 2010, Kiran Rao's film Dhobi Ghat was a bold attempt at presenting stories that linked the haves and the haves-not in an engaging way. It established the connection between the people living in the streets of Mumbai and its plush localities.

In the coming years, two films are set to release with Mumbai in their backdrops. These are Bombay Velvet and Peddlers. It seems that Indian cinema's love affair with Mumbai continues. Mumbai continues to haunt, inspire and nudge the creative energies of film-makers. Scriptwriter Sanjay Chhel says, "If anyone has to make a pan-India film, Mumbai has to be its backdrop. It is a cosmopolitan city where all festivals such as Ganpati, Christmas, Diwali and Eid are celebrated with equal gusto. For any film-maker, Mumbai provides that food thali where there is everything for everyone."

Directed by Rensil D'Silva, "Ungli" stars Emraan Hashmi and Kangana Ranaut in the lead.

"I don't know whether to call it an item song or a promotional song, but yes, it's a very different thing that I am doing," Shraddha, who will team up with Emraan in the song, told IANS.

"Karan offered me the song and said: 'You have never been seen like this before. It's a very glamorous song.' So all that excited me and I said yes to it. The moment I heard the song, I was all the more excited as it's such a catchy song," she further added.

Titled "Dance Basanti", the song choreographed by Bosco-Caesar will go on air Tuesday.

When asked does the song have any link to Hema Malini's Basanti from "Sholay", she said: "I guess, it's definitely a take from original Basanti. It's a modern day twist. I can't compare myself with Hemaji's Basanti. She is the original legendary Basanti."

'Dhoom 3' that released on Christmas last year in 2013 made Rs 100 crore in just three days! According to Koimoi, the total collections of 'Dhoom 3' were Rs 280.25 crores. It was the first time that Aamir Khan played the villain for the very successful film series. No other film has so far broken this record.

No male director has got this kind of opening: Farah

Farah Khan is one of the few female directors who has broken the myth that a woman can't helm masala movies. The director, who has churned out blockbusters like "Main Hoon Naa" and "Om Shanti Om", says in a "sexist country" she has proved that a woman can do it better.

Her latest film "Happy New Year", starring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Jackie Shroff, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood and Vivaan Shah, has earned a record Rs.44.97 crore on the opening day of its release.

"We knew it would do well because it has Shah Rukh, Deepika and me. It's a big movie. The songs were doing well, there was great energy and positive buzz about it. We knew it would get a big opening, but this big! Nobody knew even the trade experts are in shock I think," Farah, also a choreographer, told IANS on phone from Mumbai.

She is thrilled about the fact that being a woman, her film has done so well at the box office.

"We live in a sexist country where women are put down, treated badly and told that they can't do things that men do. Being a woman, numbers have come like this. Not only a woman director, but no male director has also got this kind of an opening. So, we should definitely celebrate it," said the director, who is married to filmmaker Shirish Kunder.

Known for making fast paced films with oodles of romance, action, comedy and drama, the mother of three children doesn't want to be "pressurised" by reviews.

"I don't want to be pressurised by any critic who thinks that I should make certain type of movie, which is slow, boring and so-called sensitive and I shouldn't be making this because this is a man's territory. I will do it and do better than a man," she said.

"It takes a lot to write a script that one billion people will accept and to make it big, funny and clean without having sexist jokes, bad language, or cheap humour.

"It's very easy to please five critics, but very difficult to please the entire nation which is so diverse in its thoughts, behaviour and likes," she added.

READ: Shahrukh Khan: I pray to Allah that Happy New Year delivers happiness to the viewers

If the film is entertaining, the song in the end credit too has enhanced the experience of the movie buffs. Farah says a lot goes into it.

"My biggest pressure was what to do in the credit roll because everybody waits for that. I always feel the credit roll has to go with the theme of the movie like 'Om Shanti Om' was about movies, so we had a premiere at the end.

"'Happy New Year' is about world dance championship so, we had dance championship. Definitely, thought goes into it otherwise it will have random people just dancing. This time we gave trophies and all. It was a proper competition at the end," added the director, who included shots of her three children and Shah Rukh's son AbRam in the end credit.

Right now, she is in the mood to celebrate the success of the heist drama.

"We will be having a party at my house and each member of the cast will rotate the party. We are quite a few of us, so I think we will be celebrating for a week atleast," she said.

And post parties, it'd be family time.

"I'll go on a long holiday with my kids and husband to London for Christmas," said Farah.

And while I too, like all others, am a big HrithikRoshan fan and would like to work with him in the future, this rumour is completely untrue."
