Vishal Bhardwaj invited to direct an English Opera in Paris

Vishal Bhardwaj has been invited to direct a play called A Flowering Tree at the prestigious state-owned Chatelet theatre in Paris. Chatelet is one of the biggest and most beautiful theatres in Paris, with its 2,000 seating and a history of 150-year-old performances.

A Flowering Tree is a play adapted from AK Ramanujan's famous poems based on Indian folk tales. The play had been adapted once before where Peter Sellars had directed it and John Adams, one of the most renowned contemporary music directors, had given the music.

Vishal would be interpreting it in his own Indian style and has the much-acclaimed Dadi Pudumjee making puppets for the same. Talking to us, Vishal said, "I am really excited to be stage-directing a choir of 24 great singers with a 100-member philharmonic orchestra on such a prestigious platform.

While making films, we are always only working towards making it a hit, whereas here the only thing they want me to focus on, is the purity of art and that is so wonderful. "In Bollywood today, the box office figures have no correlation to the quality of the film. Our sincerest hope is that 10 years down the line, the figures will be forgotten, while the 'Kelas' they got are remembered," Anant Singh, creative head, Golden Kela Awards, said in a statement.

The honour for the worst actor in supporting role went to Aditya Roy Kapoor for 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' and Deepika Padukone, Jacqueline Fernandes and Amisha Patel jointly won the worst supporting actor (female) for 'Race 2'. As part of the special awards, Deepika also won Dara Singh award for the worst accent for 'Chennai Express'. The Kela for the worst director went to Sanjay Leela Bhansali for 'Goliyon Ki Raas Leela...Ram Leela'.

The Baawra Ho Gaya Hai Ke award went to Aamir for 'Dhoom:3'. "Aamir Khan once said that he loves the Kela Awards, because all other awards are rigged. Wonder what he has to say about us now," quipped Singh. 'Dhoom:3' also shared the Ra.One Award for Worst Premise with 'Krrish 3'.

Telly starlet Gulki Joshi, who was in Vadodara for the English adaptation of Vijay Tendulkar's much acclaimed play Sakharam Binder, says that she prefers theatre over other mediums.

However, she clarifies, "I would say that theatre is my first love, while television is my husband! I was initially hesitant about taking up Sakharam Binder, as it is a classic and it's difficult to do justice to the subject unless you are at your best as an actor! But we have worked very hard as a team and hopefully, our sincere efforts will be appreciated. It's a play that is very relevant in today's times as well. Theatre is my biggest stress buster!"

Gulki, who is trained in salsa, goes on to add, "I am very glad that I became an actor because acting is the only thing that I can do well! I have always been inclined towards shows that have good content and offer scope for performance. I have just started shooting for a new show and we have been shooting in Chandigarh for the last few days but I can't divulge any details right now. So far, all my shows have chosen me and I have been pretty blessed that way. I would love to do a dance reality show some day! I am also game for a singing reality show. But I will never do a show like Bigg Boss!"

Movie Review: 'Noah'

Story: Based on the Old Testament tale from the Bible, Noah is chosen by God to build an Ark as a shelter for a male and female pair of every living creature on Earth in preparation for an apocalyptic yet cleansing flood.

Review: Noah (Crowe) knows that the flip side of him being chosen to save all that is pure and innocent (read: the entire animal kingdom and only his family) is that he will have to make some really tough decisions, like turning away tons of people who also seek safety in the Ark. His father Methuselah (Hopkins, brilliant) prepares Noah for the task over a conversation, after which Noah then returns to Naameh (Connelly) and his sons Shem (Booth), Ham (Lerman) and Japeth (Carroll) with the divine message.

A group of Watchers led by Samyazaa (Nolte) help Noah build the gigantic Ark. But the latter's nemesis Tubal-Cain (Winstone) believes that there's no point in blind acceptance of one's fate. But Noah, for all his devotion to duty, is all too aware of his own inner frailties. Nonetheless, as a domineering patriarchal figure, he would even sacrifice his own family if need be, for the greater cause.

The Satan-like Cain's ideological clash with Noah centers around the former's belief that there is nothing wrong for humans to do what they need to in order to survive and multiply. After dealing with all of this, Noah is exhausted by the time the Ark finally reaches Ararat.

Although Aronofsky has dipped liberally into the well of fantasy in his recreation of Noah's tale, he does it in a manner that serves up a quasi-modern story laced generously with allegory and backed by some solid, no-nonsense performances. He does not go overboard on religious subject matter and instead, chooses to give the movie a more human, moralistic direction. There's even an interesting montage describing the origin of the universe. Watson puts in her most mature performance to date as Ila (Shem's wife). All in all, a lush visual spectacle told on a fittingly grand scale.

Movie Review: 'Dishkiyaoon'

Story: A young boy aspires to become a don when he grows up because he believes in settling scores as opposed to leading a life of Ahimsa.

Review: Viki Kartoos (Harman Baweja) is a scarred child. He has lost his mother early in life and leads a loveless existence. His father, Rajit Kapur, advocates the ways of the Mahatma—asking his son to show his other cheek to some fat school bully who smacks him day in and day out. Beyond that, daddy dearest has no time for sonny boy. Surprisingly, he doesn't even seem to notice his child's continuously smacked cheeks. And in what is ridiculous and retarded, the father, who is constantly talking into a phone at the dinner table, notices a gun on his son, many moons after Viki has begun spending time with a local hoodlum Tony Mota (Prashant Narayan).

The goon grooms the boy to be "his bullet" to be used when the time is right. And, as one mentioned earlier, dad callously throws son out on the street and into the Mafioso Tony's hands without an iota of emotion. The boy too has no remorse about choosing a life of crime. Almost making it seem like he has chosen candy. Though he is born middle-class and respectable, he happily apes Rocky, Tony, Khaleefa and such others.

Please note, none of the mafia dons instill fear, nor do they endear. They just talk, shoot and then talk some more, lulling you into sleep. For an action thriller, the narrative pace is so languid, you can take your popcorn and pee break between the times when two bullets are fired.

Lakwa (Sunny Deol) with a ridiculous North-Indian accent, sporting an unibrow and facial fuzz shows up in a wasted special appearance. Shilpa Shetty Kundra, the producer, shakes her booty in an item song with the end credits. After you have bitten this bullet for two hours, her dance soothes you, albeit for a wee bit.

Former actor Nanda died on Tuesday morning at her residence in Versova. Her funeral will take place at evening in Oshiwara crematorium said the police. She was 75-year-old and died natural death said the police.

Few policemen were deployed outside her bungalow for the bandobast. The police said couple of veteran from film industry had visited Nanada's residence after they learnt about her death. She was living at her sea-facing bungalow on Yari Road, Versova.

Nanda was born on January 8, 1939, to a Marathi-speaking family in Bombay. Her dad was actor Master Vinayak, and mom's name was Meenaxi. She has two brothers and a sister, who married into the Sindhi-speaking Gurbaxani family. She has a niece named Geeta. She is the great-niece of film-maker V. Shantaram, who fathered yesteryear actress Rajshri.

Katrina and her beau's dad share hotel

By a stroke of coincidence, Katrina Kaif and Rishi Kapoor, father of Ranbir Kapoor, who is rumoured to be in a relationship with Kat, are staying in the same hotel in Chandigarh these days. Both the actors are in the city on account of their films being shot here. While Rishi is here for Aye Bala Ko Taal Tu with Divya Dutta and Ram Kapoor, Katrina is shooting for Phantom with Saif Ali Khan.

Though we have learnt that Katrina and Ranbir have cemented their relationship even further after their recent holiday in Sri Lanka, we aren't sure if Kat's relationship with her prospective in-laws (if Ranbir and Kat formalise their affair into marriage that is), have changed their attutude towards the actress. While some time back we had heard that both Rishi and Neetu, Ranbir's parents, were not too keen on Ranbir settling down with Katrina, we aren't sure if their relationship have undergone any change since Ranbir-Kat decided to come even closer to each other of late.

Salman Khan was the main attraction of this season of Koffee With Karan. Evidently he opened the season, appearing with his father Salim Khan in the first episode of the season. India's Best Dramebaaz was a kids talent-search Indian reality television show on Zee TV which has children between the ages of 5–12 years as the participants. But, the actor is now being criticised by the Save India Family Foundation, an institution, which fights for the rights of men. Says the Centra India President of SIFF, Rajesh Vakharia, : "The title of Aamir Khan's program Satyameva Jayate has to be changed to Ardha-Satyameva Jayate (Half Truths only Triumph) as it is all about manipulation and fake tears.

For example, the episode on domestic violence last season never mentioned anything about any domestic violence that men may face, leaving the audience with a perception that only women face domestic violence and men can never be victims of domestic violence by women. Not only that, the statistics of domestic violence against women in Satyameva Jayate were false as he went on to tweak the data here and there. For example, National Family Health Survey (NFHS) - III, whose data Aamir Khan quoted, was funded by US embassy (or USAID) and it deliberately limited the survey to only women in the age group of 15 to 49. This survey conveniently excluded elderly men, women, children and most importantly men.

Aamir Khan forcing residents to sell flats for his bungalow?

This piece of news might come as a shocker for those who hold actor and activist Aamir Khan in high regard.

According to a news report in Indian Express, the 'Satyamev Jayate' host is allegedly forcing people in his swanky Pali Hill neighbourhood in Mumbai's Bandra area to sell their apartments to him so that he can construct a bungalow for himself.

The report alleges that an octagenarian woman and her daughter have alleged that the managing committee of their housing society is apparently misleading people and even pressurizing them to sell 60 per cent of the land to Aamir Khan for his palatial bungalow.

Calling it a "falsely conceived redevelopment scheme" (sic), Dr Pamela de Sa, 87, and her daughter, Dr Geneve de Sa, 50, complained to the deputy registrar of co-operative societies.

The report further reveals that the society in question is Virgo Co-operative Housing Society that has 23 members. The society comprises of two buildings, Marina Apartments and Bella Vista, that has 12 flats each. While Aamir Khan owns two flats in Marina and one in Bella Vista, Pamela de Sa owns two apartments in Marina, and Geneve de Sa owns two garages in Bella Vista.

The report mentions that Aamir had first expressed an interest in acquiring a part of the plot in December 2011. Aamir has allegedly offered to buy 20,000 sq ft of the 36,207 sq ft (3,364 sq m) property at the rate of Rs 70,000 per sq ft of carpet area from society members interested in selling their flats or garages to him.

According to the offer made by Aamir to the society, a certain number of members should be willing to sell their premises outright so that Aamir has atleast 20,000 sq ft of carpet area for himself to build his mansion.

Also, for those members who are unwilling to sell their premises, Aamir has apparently offered to build a separate building on the rest of the plot.

According to the minutes of the meeting, 23 members voted in favour of Aamir while five members rejected the same. However, Geneve de Sa elaborates that out of the 23 members who voted atleast 75% or 17 members should have been present in the meeting while on the other hand, she says only 14 of them were there and the rest sent their vote in a sealed envelope. Geneva de Sa also states in the report that the proposed offer was for redevelopment but it is actually for selling the society's property to Aamir Khan instead.

Deputy Registrar of Co-operative Housing Societies S M Patil said he was yet to go through the complaint but it appeared prima facie that the proposal did not qualify as "redevelopment".

Actor dumped by girlfriend

Reality star James Lock was left red-faced when his girlfriend Danielle Armstrong ended their relationship on reality TV show "The Only Way Is Essex".

Lock was accused of cheating on his girlfriend Armstrong with former "Big Brother" contestant Sallie Axl, reports mirror.co.uk

Armstrong posted on Twitter: "She was the girl he slept with." Lock denied the claim writing: "I admit I've got myself in stupid situations socialising with girls like you!! But I have never cheated on my girlfriend."

Lock sticks to his words, insisting that he did not do anything wrong and has remained faithful to Armstrong.

"Obviously, I wanted to be with Danielle, she means everything to me but I can't understand where she's coming from. She's basically, like, shooting me down, she's giving me nowhere to go with it," said Lock to ITV.

The 'Mad Men' actress - who has never revealed the identity of the father of her two-year-old son Xander - has a crush on the 'Diamonds' singer, and also legendary late actor Paul Newman, who died in 2008 aged 82.

Movie Review: 'Lakshmi'

Story: Lakshmi is sold off and forced into prostitution but she has the grit and gumption to free herself from the bondage of the brothel.

Review: Fair, fresh and barely fourteen. Pretty and virgin. Comes with a price tag (negotiable). Ready for sale! This is what a brothel-broker's sale-pitch would've been for teenage girl Laskhmi (Monali). A good bargain for a piece of puberty (sic!). Lakshmi's story of tragedy, trauma and triumph begins here.

An obnoxious pimp Chinna (Nagesh) buys off Lakshmi from a village in Andhra Pradesh and packs her off to a brothel (owned by his own corrupt brother, Reddy - Satish Kaushik) called Dharam Vilas Girls Hostel - a sham set up to run his sex trade. Soon she's thrown into a dark world of sex-hungry men who're ready to pay premium for her puberty. The 'madame' of the brothel (Shefali) trains her for the job (with padded bras and jellies to 'slip it in') while her roommate (Flora) teaches her how to allure the sleazeballs. She forges a friendship, but unable to suffer the atrocities, Lakshmi tries to escape the sex slavery. It leads to more unbearable brutality, but she's a fighter. She drags her oppressors to the courtroom and exposes their despicable crimes.

Kukunoor's 'Lakshmi', based on a harrowing true story, is a thought-provoking, disturbing film told with heartbreaking detail and a narrative that is so raw and ruthlessly realistic, it often becomes repulsive. The repeat scenes of sexual exploitation (layered with lewd dialogues: 'Machine mein tel daal, factory kholna hai') are gut-wrenching. Several movies and documentaries have been filmed on this subject, what makes this special is the steadfast resolve of a 14-year-old to fight social demons.

We wish Kukunoor had focused more on her spirit and triumph - our experience would've been more fulfilling, less overbearing. Shefali is brilliant, debutant Monali expresses with her beautiful eyes. Kapoor and Kaushik are average and Nagesh doesn't push his performance too far.

Lakshmi's story makes your heart bleed. If you have the courage, watch it.

Kamal Haasan's message on elections

The Tamil Nadu state election commission has roped in actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan to campaign against cash for votes. In a video released by the election commission, Kamal has urged people to not sell their future and self-respect for a pittance. "Don't vote by comparing which leader is paying more for voting. Think about in whose hands you are resting your future and then vote for the deserving leader. Don't sell your future and self-respect for a pittance," Haasan said in the video.

"Let's vote with conscience and promise that under any circumstance we wouldn't sell our votes," he added. Kamal says voting is one of the important duties of every citizen.

"Out of the different duties we are obliged to do for our country, voting is very important. Let's vote by understanding and realizing the capabilities of the leader contesting in the elections," said Kamal.

Kamal is currently busy shooting for upcoming Tamil comedy 'Uttama Villain'.

Over 10 million to join Illayaraja's fan club

The first official fan club for legendary music composer Illayaraja, to be launched April 5 in Madurai, will have over 10 million registered members, including hundreds of singers and musicians, says its managing trustee Velusamy.

"The intention of this club is to bring fans of Illayaraja from all walks of life under one roof. This will also be the first official club for the maestro and it will be managed by a core team with a purpose. It will be a registered club and we are expecting over a crore people to enroll in it," said Velusamy.

"Hundreds of singers and composers will also enroll themselves in the club. Illayaraja has been an inspiration for an entire generation of musicians. Another important intention of the club is to give back to the society which has given the maestro fame, wealth and goodwill," he added.

A series of social activities is being planned to be carried out by the club. "We don't want this to be a regular fan club to merely celebrate the achievements of Illayaraja. We would like to use this platform to carry out several social activities throughout the state of Tamil Nadu," he said.

"Illayaraja is already constructing schools for the poor in small villages. We plan to carry out such good social initiatives for the public. Post-inception, we will chalk out an agenda and work accordingly," Velusamy added.

It was their acting and performances that transfixed me. Aamir's phenomenal acting totally attracts me from the first movie of his I watched, Dil Chata Hai.
