While Poorna says she is very close to the character she played in her debut film, she is now ready to show her "polar opposite" avatar to the audience on TV as Safar Khan in the English crime drama Criminal Justice. Ask her how life has changed after her Bollywood stint and she says, "It's been a bit of a roller coaster ride. It's opened doors here although most of my work still comes from New York." She adds, "Working with Aamir Khan has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life; he's truly a leader in this business."
Having moved around from one country to another most of her life, different cultures have influenced Poorna and made her the person she is today. Although she says that change is stressful for her, Poorna is comfortable never fitting-in one place. She says, "I find myself changing my entire lifestyle every three years or so and I'm comfortable in being an outsider. I have grown up like that."
Though she runs her own brand consultancy firm, acting had always been on Poorna's mind. She says, "I've always wanted to be an actor but I didn't know how to become one. I think the best thing I ever did was never tell anyone I wanted to be an actor. I find if you tell people what you're dreaming about they'll usually come up with lots of reasons to not chase your dreams. So the first time my parents found out I was acting was when a friend told them they had just come back from a play I was in."
After having found a firm foothold in the US, Poorna is now juggling her Bollywood projects. She says, "I have an extremely supportive husband who looks after our six-year old while I'm shooting." Ask her about Indian actors being typecast in international films and TV and she replies, "That's largely true. But even African Americans and Hispanic actors get typecast. However, all that is changing, may be not as fast as we'd like it to, but it is."
Talking about what's next in the pipeline (Ayan Mukherji's Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani), Poorna says, "Ayan is very easy to work with. All my scenes were in Paris with Ranbir Kapoor — he's a prince, and there are not enough nice things I can say about him."
