Unlike other Gujarati filmmakers who have many times incorporated Gujarati protagonists and Gujarati backdrop in their films, Sanjay feels that "the script rules, and for that I can't forcibly always try to bring in Gujarati culture in a film. A Bollywood film has to appeal globally and even if I am a Gujarati, I have to be cosmopolitan with my thoughts, so only if the script demands I would have to insist on a Gujarati backdrop. Otherwise, the film has to be made with a global audience in mind. I also don't believe in the idea of having Gujarati characters who are in a film just to provide humour. Ajab Gazabb Love has Darshan Jariwalla, playing a strong role, he is also a Gujarati it was a learning experience working with him."
Having said that, Sanjay is happy that a film like Barfi! has found a connect with audiences. "The way Anurag (Basu) has directed the film on his own convictions and not incorporated any formulas, says a lot on how much the craft of a film can improve and yet find a connect with the masses," he says on a parting note.
