I don’t want to limit myself as an actor: Rajeev Khandelwal

Ahmedabad is my second home and it feels great to be here as always," confessed Rajeev Khandelwal when AT caught up with him recently. The dimpled heartthrob was in Ahmedabad to promote his film, and catch the India-Pakistan T20. "Cricket is like a religion in India and like all Indians, even I love cricket. Although I'm not a fanatic, but an India and Pakistan match makes me super excited."

Rajeev, who's done movies like Aamir, Shaitan, Soundtrack and Will You Marry Me, says, "I like doing films with strong content and storyline. I don't want to limit myself as an actor and like to push the envelope as much as possible. I want to shatter preconceived notions about me as an actor with every film I do. So you will never see me doing routine Hindi films."

For any actor being part of offbeat films could be professional risk though. Rajeev admits, "Once an actor starts playing safe, he starts weighing his chances in everything he does, which is no fun."

Rajeev reportedly has some steamy scenes in his forthcoming movie with co-star Tena Desae. Ask him how comfortable he was doing them and he laughs and says, "I had a few steamy scenes in Soundtrack also. If I am convinced that intimate love scenes are justified, then as an actor I'm comfortable doing them. But I don't believe that a film can work because it has some smooches or skin show."

So how does his wife react when he shoots such scenes? "She is today's girl and knows that the man on screen doing those steamy scenes is an actor. There's nothing real about those scenes at all," Rajeev explains.

What makes Rajeev take short breaks before each cinematic outing? Is it a well-planned move or coincidence? He says with a shrug, "There are times when I'd like scripts and verbally commit to doing the films because they sounded promising, but sometimes the projects didn't take off beyond the sounding board, while some got shelved halfway. Sometimes good scripts are ruined by people without creative vision. A film can't be treated like a business proposition."

Rajeev, who quit television at the peak of his success, says, "I've never been obsessed about making money, otherwise I'd still be doing daily soaps. If I keep doing the same thing, I'll never grow as an actor. If I come across good projects, I'd love to do them, which means even TV shows. I'm even open to doing theatre."
