Javed Ali, the mellifluous voice behind several Bollywood and Tollywood romantic songs, says he is kicked to perform at the Times of India concert in the city

It's his first visit to the City of Destiny and playback singer Javed Ali, who stole several hearts with songs such as Jashn-e-bahaara and Nagaada Nagaada, says he can't wait to woo Vizagites. Ahead of his concert tonight at the Command Stadium, INS Satavahana, where he's all set to ring in the festive season with the creme of the city and Navy personnel, the singer talks about his preparation, his musical journey and his love for romantic numbers.

You're all set to perform in Vizag. Have you performed here earlier? What are your expectations?

This is the first time that I'm performing in the city. I've heard a lot about the city and that people in Vizag are very musically inclined. I'm very excited to perform here.

What are the songs that you have planned to sing?

I plan to have a good mix of Hindi and Telugu songs. I've sung quite a few Tollywood numbers, so those will definitely be on the list. Jashn-e-bahaara, Kilimanjaro and Nagaada are some of the songs that I will be singing.

You started your singing career at a very young age...

Yeah, my father is a singer... toh zahir si baat thi, for me to be influenced by the musical environment. I was very young when he used to take me along with him to his shows. Eventually, as I started developing an interest, he encouraged me a lot and also trained me in music. I must have been about six to seven years old when I decided that I wanted to take up music. I was always a part of various singing competitions in school, so that developed my confidence and I was very sure that this is what I wanted to do.

You also learnt music from Ghulam Ali...

I was a big fan of Ghulam Ali during my growing-up years. I listened to him whenever I could. The first time I met him was at my dad's friend's place. Main unko apna guru manta hoon. Everytime he would come to Mumbai for a performance, I would get really excited and go running to meet him. Since he would be staying at my dad's friend's place, I would go to their place whenever I could. I never really sat down and learnt music from him, but my learning has been only by listening to him and interacting with him.

You wanted to become a ghazal singer. So how did playback singing happen?

I always wanted to become a ghazal singer because I was such a big fan of Ghulam Ali. Aap jab kisiko utna like karte ho toh aap unki tarah banna chahte ho. But when I met Kalyanji in Mumbai, he was the one who said that I have a very smooth voice and that I should give a shot at playback singing. The good thing about being a playback singer is that you get to experiment with a lot of different styles and get versatile. That's also a reason why I decided to be a playback singer.

Which is your favourite style...

I love singing romantic songs and a Sufi mix. I've tried my hand at various styles in songs like Nagaada Nagaada, Kun Faaya Kun, but I enjoy myself to the hilt when I sing romantic songs. Even when I sang Ek Din Teri Raahon Mein, I remember maine woh gaane ko poore dil se gaaya tha and gave it my 100%. Deep in my heart, I knew that song would do very well, and fortunately it was one of the songs that became extremely popular from the movie and got a tremendous response. With Jashne-e-bahaara too, it was the same. It was a jackpot and besides, it was the first time I was working with Rahman sir.

You worked with Rahman on a lot of songs ever since. How is it working with him?

He's a genius. Jitna kaha jaye Rahman sir ke bare mein utna kam hai. Mazaa aa jaata hai unke saath kaam kar ke. I've sung some of my best songs with him. He understands the voice quality of a singer very well.

How did Tollywood playback singing happen?

I like challenging work and even though it's not my mother tongue, I've liked taking it up. Aisa hota hai, ki jab aap masti mein hote hain to koi bhi challenge ko lene ke liye tayyar hote hain. I had to learn the pronunciation. It is a little difficult, but I've tried to work hard at it. Also, there is so much to learn from South Indian music composers. They know so much. I think they are technically very advanced in music and their recording style is also very different. Toh nazariya change hota hai. Their rhythm pattern is also different which helps me as a performer.

What are your future projects?

I have a couple of offers from Bollywood and Tollywood which I cannot reveal much about right now. Main abhi apni shuruwaat manta hoon and there is so much to do. Main apni pehchaan banana chahta hoon and have the kind of respect that a legendary singers like Rafi has. Although I've also got the opportunity to work with many composers in the North and South, I really want to work with Vishal Bharadwaj. He's one of the composers that I'm really eager to work with.
