Ask her why we don't see much of her in films and she replies, "After Dev.D, I was offered roles where I only had four scenes. No director used to let me read the whole script. They used to say aapke chaar 'bold scenes' hain movie mein. I was shocked that people thought I did 'bold' scenes in Dev.D. My character was bold but hello, there were no intimate or bold scene with me in that movie. I told all those people who offered me such roles to watch the entire film again and to decide on their own about what kind of scenes I did. Yes, I have not been doing many films, because I am the kind of actress who loves doing roles which are written keeping her in mind. Jab koi director mujhe aake bolta hai ki humne aapko deemag mein rakh ke yeh role likha hai, then I feel interested in the project."
While Mahie may have conventional Indian looks, she says she has been brought up like a boy. "I am the only girl in the whole Gill khandaan. Although I belong to a Jat-Sikh family, who are known to be very conservative, I didn't have to face any restrictions, whether it was regarding my career or personal choices. Since I only had brothers around me, I have been raised up by my family just like a boy," she laughs.
Talking of family, while Mahie is divorced, she's not single anymore. "I know my first marriage failed, but that was because I was very young and immature at that time. But now I am quite mature, and you know, I share a good rapport with my ex husband. I still respect him and we do exchange messages often. We are in touch. But yes, I am over that relationship and now, I would love to re-marry and have kids," she shares.
When, we ask, and pat comes the reply, "I have no idea! I haven't even thought about it. Yes, I know I am 36 and have social pressure to marry and have kids, and biological too, but I am in no hurry. I don't feel I am 36, I feel as if I am only 18! I have been in a relationship with a businessman, who was earlier a very good friend of mine, from Goa and we are taking it slow. It is a long distance relationship and we have never talked about when we'd like to get married. Thankfully, it is working like that for us as of now."
In fact, just some time back, Mahie bought a flat in Goa and will be decorating it with her beau. She adds, "Also, why I probably don't feel the pressure to marry is because my family is quite broad-minded and they don't put any pressure on me to marry my boyfriend."
