On Dev Anand's first death anniversary, which falls tomorrow, yesteryear actress Waheeda Rehman shares the good times she spent with her favourite co-star

Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman formed a super hit romantic pair in the 50s and 60s and they both did some memorable films like CID, Solva Saal, Kala Bazar, Baat Ek Raat Ki and Guide together. The latter will be unveiling a statue of her favourite co-star in Mumbai on the first death anniversary of Dev Anand, who she feels was the eternal romantic. Waheeda Rehman speaks about unforgettable moments from some of her films with Dev Anand.

CID
I was introduced to Hindi films by Guru Dutt in CID, 1956. It was directed by Raj Khosla efficiently. A suspense thriller, CID had me as the golden-hearted vamp, Kamini. I did not have any romantic scenes with Dev Anand in the film. He was very cooperative and never made me feel like a newcomer on the sets. I still remember my first interaction with him in CID. He comes to enquire details about an editor's murder from me. I request him to release the murderer Mehmood who is in his custody. Dev Anand twitched his left eyebrow, and said, "Who Tota" and threatened to arrest me. He was very convincing.

Kala Bazar
I was thrilled to work opposite Dev Anand the third time in his own production Navketan's Kala Bazar in 1960. It was crisply written and directed by Dev Anand's younger brother, Vijay Anand. Kala Bazar starred the three handsome and talented brothers Chetan, Dev and Vijay. As the idealist college girl Alka, I unconsciously fall in love with Raghuvir (Dev Anand), a cinema ticket black marketer. As he mouthed the immortal Khoya Khoya Chand in the film, I marvelled at his fluidity as an actor and the way he spelt romance on screen.

Guide
This was my most memorable film along with Dev Anand in 1966. Based on the classic by RK Narayan, and directed by Vijay Anand, it remains a landmark in Indian cinema. Dev Anand was at his altruistic best in the film shedding his popular mannerisms. As he knelt down, holding my hands and emoting, "Rosy, ek baar mujhe kehne do mujhe tumse pyar hai," he shook me emotionally. No other actor could have performed Raju Guide with the conviction with which he did.
