The Filmfare awards night this year was a feel-good affair with hosts Shah Rukh Khan and Saif Ali Khan steering clear from their politically incorrect banter. That did not mean that the show lost out on any of its sparkle. While SRK was in his best form after a long time, it was Saif's one-liners that had the audience in splits.
Love was in the air, on the faces of the ladies - Vidya Balan was aglow in the early rush of marriage, while this season's most keenly followed 'couple' Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone sat together, oozing a certain easy camaraderie.
The original diva of the film industry, Rekha radiated much affection as she kissed Vidya on her forehead and left a tell-tale scarlet smudge, Ranbir Kapoor remained all ears for her as she spoke to him tenderly and later gave him the trophy for Best Actor, while Priyanka Chopra could not seem to get her eyes off her.
Friends Urmila Matondkar and Manish Malhotra sat together, while rivals Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh chatted happily with each other. In fact, the evening saw some the other archrivals opening up their hearts and arms to each other. Deepika, looking absolutely stunning in her gothic yet feminine Prabal Gurang gown was spotted greeting Priyanka Chopra, who looked elegant in an Armani Prive.
There were some unmistakable sartorial statements - Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit Nene gave their heavy sarees and jewellery a miss and were instead spotted in cleavage-revealing gowns. If Madhuri's shimmering midnight blue Alberto Makali gown complimented her million-dollar smile, Sridevi was spot on in a tangerine Alberta Ferretti.
Among the young lot, Parineeti was doll-sy in a Rajat Tangri creation, while Ileana D'cruz who arrived with a firang arm-candy, sported a Cavalli. However, it was Anushka, in her yellow gown, who stole the show. Ranvir Singh, who fitted his hot new body in a razor-sharp suit, wore his swagger on his sleeves, while Arjun Kapoor preferred to wear his signature impish grin instead. But it was Gulzar saab, who managed to stand out in the sea of suits and sherwanis in his signature white kurta-pyjama. The only concession he seemed to make for the occasion were his gold mojaris.
