TV does not bring up kids, parents do: Smriti Irani

Wearing a green sari and a hint of make-up, Smriti Irani looked totally at ease when she walked into the TOI office for an interaction on Thursday afternoon, greeting all of us with a warm smile. "There's reason for this comfort level," she says, adding, "The make-up, camera, it's all my past. I don't miss it at all and I don't strive to live up to a certain image. It doesn't bother me at all!" Excerpts from a chat with Smriti where she speaks about her journey as a 'go to' person when she was kid to this firebrand politician that she is now:

From a popular bahu to a fiery politician, how would you describe your journey?
It's an evolution of sorts and I am extremely proud of the fact that whether it's my career as an actor or a politician, I've had no godmother, godfather etc. Whatever I've achieved is on the strength of my work.

You are a common face on TV - defending your party's position. Were you always this passionate about issues?
I was always like this - in the midst of issues and problems - so much so that in my neighbourhood, I was this 'go to' person for my friends. I would fight for them, take up cudgels for them and even beat up boys if needed!

Beat up boys? Please explain...
My friend was being stalked by a boy and that was troubling her and she told me about it. One day, I just took panga with those boys and really taught them a lesson. There was a fight, some bruises, but at that time I was hardly worried about the bruises or boys, I was hoping my mom wouldn't come to know. She'd always tell me 'kyu ye sab karti hai...kaun shaadi karega tumse' and here I was doing exactly what she didn't like! But, I could not emotionally dissociate from an issue, and even today, that's one thing I cannot let go of. The day I lose this, I think I won't be myself!

So, did mom find out?
She did because that day was her day off at work and I was caught. But, there was a reason why she asked me to behave in a certain way. We were not rich, and when you don't have money or power, all you're taught to is survive without getting into trouble. Because if you do (get into trouble), you don't have the money or might to be bailed out!

In the wake of the Delhi gang rape, women's issues have come into focus. What do you say to those who say we have a misogynist approach towards women in the entertainment industry?
It's the easiest thing in the world to find scapegoats. All I say is that in the Ramayan - there is a Ram and Raavan - you have to pick your choice. When there are U/A certified films, why do parents take their kids to such films? When there is an item song that you think is not good for kids, change the channel! After all, we parents should remember that TV does not bring up our kids, we do! As far as misogyny is concerned, as an actor, I have refused to mouth dialogues that are demeaning to women. There was a case of marital rape in Kyunki... and I was supposed to support Ansh, my son. I called Ekta and flatly said no. In fact, I told her I wish I could say this: 'Balaatkar mardangi ki nishaani nahin hai, yeh to napunsak ka kaam hai.' Ekta was shell shocked, but agreed as I told her these are the lines that every family should hear. I have refused to do gutkha ads, even if it meant that at the time I could buy a house with the money earned. It's a personal value system that I believe in. I can't live with a convenient conscience.

As an artist, do you think India-Pak cultural ties should be renewed?
I have too many people in the armed forces to believe that peace will come with one hand tied at the back. When any peace measure results in dead soldiers at the border, it's a peace that's difficult to digest for me.
