Gulzar's daughter speaks up for him as he retires hurt from speculations about his Lahore trip

When poet-lyricist-filmmaker Gulzar abruptly cut short his Pakistan trip and returned to India, speculations were rife that it was prompted by volatile Indo-Pak relations. Vishal Bhardwaj, who had accompanied the veteran on the trip, clarified in a press note that the decision was purely personal. But sections of the media from both sides of the border saw a bigger conspiracy at play, linking his decision to come back with the hanging of Afzal Guru and its backlash.

Anguished at the hurtful speculations, the octogenarian has decided to keep a low profile. There were reports that he has not been keeping well. And on Friday, Gulzar's daughter Meghna spoke to us, clarifying that his decision to miss the Karachi Lit Fest, which he was due to attend, was prompted by a sudden chest pain the 83-year-old experienced while visiting his birthplace.

"He is doing well. The uneasiness that he felt in his chest was because of a sudden surge of strong emotions. There is nothing to worry about now and his health is just fine. But he is still to recover emotionally," said Meghna.

According to Meghna, the octogenarian was overwhelmed when he visited the tomb of his mentor Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi and then his birthplace Dina in quick succession. This is the first time Gulzar visited his birthplace since he left Pakistan 70 years back.

"The neighbourhood from his childhood has changed and suddenly the memories came rushing back. After the visit, he was not in a frame of mind to give a lecture or attend any event. In fact, he got so emotional that he started feeling unwell. Later, his health started deteriorating and he decided to cut short the trip," she explained.

Meghna, who is shocked by how the matter was blown out of proportion said: "It was unfortunate how the issue was politicised. If anybody there (in Karachi) had bothered to check, they would have known. He was feeling unwell and hence decided to come back home. Something as insignificant was blown into a political controversy between Indian and Pakistan. My dad had no issues with his security in Pakistan."

Adding that her father needed some time to overcome the trauma, Meghna urged, "Please give him the time and space to recover."
