Blaming the so called 'new age cinema' for deterioration in quality of content, Puri said, "I am not a selling star. They don't write roles for old people like me anymore. The only ones in my age group who are getting roles today are star 'brands'...like Amitabh Bachchan."
Om Puri, who is now returning to theatre after 25 years, says his decision to do theatre is driven by lack of Hindi film offers coming his way.
"The new boys, directors like Anurag (Kashyap), Abhishek (Kapoor) etc. are doing good work but, unfortunately they cannot sustain their level. Initially they start off with lofty ideals but quickly fall for the greed of money," he says, adding, "Hindi films today are crude and titillating. They are giving the wrong kind of education to the masses. And no, I don't buy the argument that films today are made on demand of what people want to watch. For even if that's true, it is our bloody responsibility to reform society."
Puri even blames the contemporary actors for auguring this trend. "Stars say with great pride that, 'we are not social reformers, we are entertainers'. That is so decrepit an alibi to give out as an actor," he said.
