Vijeta Pandit talks about how her search for her missing sister came to a tragic end

When a human skull and other remains were discovered on a patch of marshy land near the Delhi Public School on Palm Beach Road, many linked them to actress Vijeta Pandit's missing sister Sandhya Singh who was a resident of the same area. However, for the family, who had been praying for the safe return of Sandhya for more than a month, it was a nightmare turned into reality. Vijeta recounted the traumatic experience of going to the police station and painstakingly identifying her sister's remains.

How did you come to know the remains found were of Sandhya's?
The police called us to identify if the remains found at the marsh were of my sister's. My brother Lalit was the first to reach the police station followed by my husband Aadesh and I. The moment I saw the belongings I knew they were Sandhya's. I knew my sister more than anyone else. Later Lalit also confirmed the same.

So who do you suspect is behind your sister's murder?
I don't know. But it was definitely a planned murder. She was abducted and then cut into pieces. We still haven't traced half her body parts (pauses.) The police should work on this case on a war footing and the perpetrators must be brought to book. The police must round up all her servants for questioning and make them spill their guts. Sometime back my sister was robbed of some of her jewellery by a maalishwali. She was later arrested. Revenge can't be ruled out as a motive behind this gruesome murder.

How can you be so sure she was abducted?
It was such a deserted area. Why on earth would she go there? She was either abducted and taken there, or someone must have called her there on some pretext. When we were showing Sandhya's picture around, a shopkeeper near the spot told us that he had apparently sold her a bottle of drinking water the day she disappeared.

In hindsight, do you think your sister should have refrained from wearing so much jewellery all the time?
I had told her a thousand times. But she never listened. She was obsessed with jewellery. I remember when she was staying with her husband in Kolkata some years back, she called me often to tell me about her new purchases. I think, just to be on the safe side, women should refrain from wearing expensive jewellery. Crime against women is going up in such an alarming rate that it is important to take precautions.

How was her relationship with her husband?
I think Sandhya was happy. She never told me about any domestic issues. In fact, she always referred to him fondly. However, two years back when my brother-in-law got transferred to Indore he didn't take my sister along with him. She was staying in Mumbai with her daughter, who also went to Mangalore to pursue higher studies. She was living a rather lonely life after that. I wish my brother-in-law had taken my sister along with him to Indore.

How close were you to Sandhya?
We would often have telephonic conversations. However, our busy schedules didn't allow us the luxury to meet up too often.

Have you informed Sulakshana about Sandhya's death?
No, we are yet to tell her. She is not keeping well and we are scared that she might not be able to bear the tragic news. She was extremely close to Sandhya.
