You lived in Ahmedabad for two months last year. What did you like about the city?
My film Patang gave me an opportunity to shoot in old Ahmedabad. The film was premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and received great reviews. But more than the appreciation, I enjoyed the craziness about the people living in old Ahmedabad. I enjoyed the way people hop from one house to another to catch a kite and the way they share their lives with each other. Where do you find this in other cities? Where will you find an aunt coming from nowhere and offering you homemade sabji? All these experiences were really valued in the pols of Ahmedabad precious. Secondly, there are few films that give you an opportunity to form friendships. Patang would be my only film where I formed friendships with the people of the city and they still invite me to have food with them and keep in touch with me.
Will we see you do a light-hearted film?
It depends on what people perceive a light-hearted film to be like. I would love to do a comedy film that will exploit my talent as an actor. People ask me 'why are you doing a horror film? All horror films made in Bollywood are usually B-grade films.' But I feel if you experiment and tell a good story then even a horror film can be entertaining. Frankly I don't understand why horror films are shunned by A-list actors in B-Town! In fact I feel that the so-called romance genre in B-Town are B/C category, because there has been no growth in the romantic movies that Bollywood films churn out every year. It's high time that Bollywood experimented with other genres.
There've been some successful romantic flicks last year.
See, I don't want to name the films but most of Bollywood films in the romantic genre lack logic or sense. Tell me where do you see a couple in real life eating an ice-cream and then suddenly 20 people start dancing in the background? Where would a hero and heroine confess undying love for each other and minutes later you see them serenading each other in a foreign country. I mean those kind of films are unreal are not my cup of tea.
So, what interests you as an actor?
I am inspired by real stories, that involve emotions, relationships and what is actually happening in the society. And the audiences also connect with such movies. The fact that Gangs of Wasseypur, Kahaani, or Talaash worked shows there is an intelligent audience. Otherwise I would not have even existed.
There is rumour that you are fighting a custody battle for your daughter. The rumour is similar to the plot of Aatma. Is this a publicity stunt?
I just spoke with my daughter and wife a few minutes back and trust me everything's in order. I don't know if such rumours have emerged because I am perfectly happy with my wife and daughter. Publicity stunts don't help in making a film sell, a good script does.
