Konkona Sen Sharma looks gorgeous in a grey and black saree she borrowed from Aparna Sen. "It helps to have a mom like that in more ways than one," quips the actress, who will be seen with her dad, Mukul Sharma, in her next film, Ek Thi Daayan. It is inspired by a short story written in 1977.
"Vishal (Bhardawaj) and dad had met and become friends and they decided to make a film," says Konkona. "But that didn't work out then. It has worked out now... Vishal has been inspired by dad's work and he has added his own inputs." Konkona has lately been seen more in Bengali films than Bollywood.
"This year just turned out to be like that," she says. "It is also the kind of projects that came my way. First of all, there is my mother's Goynar Baksho releasing next month. It has been her dream project for the last 10 years. Then Gautam Ghosh offered a film; how can I ever refuse him? And then I am doing Suman Mukhopadhyay's Shesher Kobita, based on the famous love story by Rabindranath Tagore. I get to play this iconic character Labonya."
Konkona feels the National Awards are not kind to regional cinema. "The reality is that Hindi films dominate," she says. "It is not a fair world, but what can you do? I don't think we should be expecting life or others to be fair towards us. No one owes us anything. It all depends on the choices we make in life."
There has been speculation about strife in her married life, and that she has chosen to be away from Bollywood to avoid probing questions. "Ranvir (Shorey) and I have laughed over all the speculations about our situation," says Konkona. "I have never spoken about my marriage or my relationship openly and I don't want to. I don't think I am answerable to anyone. Let the speculations be."
Haroun, her two-year-old son, has changed her, Konkona says. "I have become far more patient and mellowed down," she says, laughing. "Staying awake in the nights, I guess, changes the personality of the mother. But sometimes, I forget that he is a small child and feel like he's an old soul. I put my head against his chest and feel like he's this old person whom I have known forever."
