We hear you are making a comeback after all these years in television.
Are you talking about Once Upon a Time again? It's a small role; almost like a guest role. It's not a comeback or anything like that. I am sticking to television only. It is because of my friendship with Ekta Kapoor that I am doing this film.
When did you decide it was no more film roles for you?
When I became pregnant in 2004, I realised I had run my course and decided to put a full-stop. And I was always happy in my own space in television reality shows. Besides, in television, you function almost like a family on the sets. There's no cut-throat competition. There's a lot of caring and sharing among colleagues. There's no pressure about carrying a high-budget film on your shoulders and then suffering anxiety as the release inches closer. Significantly, I could give time to my son. Even as we talk, I am standing outside the gates of my son's school, waiting to pick him up.
Could I have done this if I were a Bollywood heroine?
A-grade heroines who are out of work in the film industry have chosen to be on reality shows... I love the way you are putting it. It's not exactly like that. I think TV as a medium has opened up a lot of opportunities for us now. I did it because it was the right thing to do at that point of time. Today, a lot of people have done if after me. I made the first move for better and not for worse.
What about money? It obviously isn't the same as when you are a film heroine...
Considering the amount of work one has to put in and the money one earns these days for reality shows, it is a great career switch. The remuneration has gone up tremendously for reality show hosts and judges. I would say it is as good if not better than what a Bollywood heroine gets these days. Besides, on reality shows, you get to be yourself and not play a part.
