Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha shares how the plan for the Madhuri-Juhi starrer was hatched in the city

A place that can turn a man into a boy is his school, and so it was for filmmaker Anubhav Sinha, who visited Queen's College while in Varanasi recently. An alumnus of the college, Anubhav, otherwise a man of few words, gushed about his memories of college.

"That patch of land served as pitch for our cricket matches, that went on even after school got over. I remember someone stealing my brand new bicycle from the cycle stand, that had me in tears with the fear of getting a scolding from my father...," he shared with the other alumi who had gathered on the college grounds to meet Anubhav.

Cut to the present, and Anubhav says, "I am loving my new job as producer. I am happy the way Gulaab Gang (GG) is shaping up. I went to the sets of GG two days before coming here and the magic of Madhuri Dixit, dancing on the steps of Saroj Khan, was indescribable. Adding to it is the presence of Juhi Chawla in the film. With such lovely artistes, I am sure something beautiful will be created."

"In fact GG was conceived during my last visit to Varanasi, more than a year back, when I was here with Soumik Sen, who is directing the film now. While on a boat ride, Soumik narrated the script to me, which I immediately liked and so, decided to produce the film," reveals the filmmaker.

Dismissing that the inspiration for the film comes from the life of activist Sampat Pal, he says "The film is pure fiction. If one makes a film on anybody's life then the basic thing to do is at least meet that person. But I have not done that, nor have plans to do so. And the lady has never approached us directly either, to register any complaint against the making of the movie."

After GG, Sinha is once again ready to don the director's hat. "I will be directing a film soon as I have figured out what I want to do now. I was too tired to direct after RA.One, and no, it was not because of the outcome of the film. In terms of business, the film did meet my expectations, but what went beyond my comprehension was the kind of deliberate, concerted effort that went in creating negative publicity for the film. Though a certain age group of people loved the film, there was a strange factions that was constantly being so negative; a similar negativity, or worse still, we have seen against Himmatwala recently," he says.

But the director is also pained by so much negativity growing around stars on micro-blogging sites. "Earlier there were fan clubs, now you have hate clubs, which is so strange. Then again, I have doubts that such hate clubs are for real, since it is very simple to have 20 people run a 100 Twitter handlers. One can hire people to do the job for you. Personally, I block people who say anything negative about stars," says Anubhav.

Anubhav, who also has a passion for music, had recently created a platform for non film music. "Jazzy B and Bappi Lahiri teaming up for an album on Holi was my first attempt .Though it was slightly Bollywoodish, the next music album would be far from filmi," he adds.
