The ongoing property dispute between the Amrohis and Cozy Home society at Pali Hill has taken a new turn, with the residents asking the court to declare actress Preity Zinta as legal heir of Shandar Amrohi, son of legendary film maker Kamal Amrohi. They want Zinta to represent Shandar, who died in 2011. Kamal, who had filed the case against the society, had died two decades ago.
Meanwhile, fed up with her name being linked to the Amrohis, Zinta has decided to file an affidavit in the court saying she has nothing to do with the family. Around two years ago, Shandar had declared that he would be leaving his property to Zinta, who was like a 'daughter' to him, before he had a fall out with the actress.
The dispute over the Cozy Home goes back by 25 years, when Kamal had filed a case saying the structure stood on the land belonging to his wife, actress Meena Kumari. At present, the society comprising five buildings houses nearly35 families.
According to Kamal's second son Tazdar Amrohi, his father decided to go to the court after residents did not pay the lease rent for years. After Meena Kumari and Kamal died, his sons Tazdar and Shandar continued the battle.
In some time, Shandar gave away his rights to Tazdar, who alone pursued the case. The society however, claimed that the land belonged to Meena Kumari, and after her death no one owned the land as Tazdar and Shandar were not her real sons. "We continued to pay rent out of respect, even after Meena Kumari's death. Tazdar, meanwhile, sold the plot to a someone, but the court refused to accept him as owner. Now Tazdar is claiming to be the owner himself," said a resident of Cozy Home.
On Friday, representatives of the society told the court that as Shandar was a party to the case, someone must represent him. They then asked the court to accept Zinta as his legal heir and call her for hearings. According to some reports, Shandar had adopted Zinta at a time when he and his brother were engaged in a legal battle against sister Rukhsar and her son Waseem.
Ravi Poplai, chairman of the Cozy Home society, said, "The matter is sub-judice. I cannot comment on it at the moment." Shandar's widow, however, said they never adopted Zinta and has also filed an affidavit in the Bandra court. Tazdar said, "There is no provision of adoption in Muslim law. Preity is a sweet girl and helped my brother in times of need, but she being legal heir is out of question."
The Bandra court has fixed July 5 as next date of hearing.
