In a career spanning almost three decades, Prabhu's worn different hats - actor, dancer, choreographer, and director - and the last seems to be his current favourite. "I'm happy working behind the camera. Direction and choreography give me more creative satisfaction," he says.
About his switch to the director's chair, he says, "Back then, acting was more of an opportunity to gain recognition, but now I'm focussed as a director and choreographer."
After the success of Wanted and Rowdy Rathore, Prabhu seems slotted as an action filmmaker, but he's looking for projects that render human emotions. "I don't know how I got categorised as someone who can only make action flicks. Be it anger, love or comedy, cinema is all about portraying emotions and that is what I want to do. As a choreographer, I love to direct romantic songs and it is the same case with the movies I make. Action toh aise hi ho gaya," he clarifies.
But as a National-Award winning choreographer, doesn't he wish to gain similar recognition as a director? "As a director, my job is to entertain people, and if my movie does both - entertain audiences and earn money - then I'm the happiest person on earth. I prefer my audiences' seeti over any award. Films are all about emotions; I don't think the love between a Tamil couple would be any different from that between a Punjabi one."
Speaking about his Bollywood choreography experiences, Prabhu tells us, "Stars don't need to be great dancers. People love them for their unique charm, style and attitude. They don't have to go out of their way to dance perfectly." He adds, "There are some awesome dancers in the industry. Shahid, Hrithik, and Madhuri Dixit Nene are show stealers."
Prabhu also talks about judging dance reality shows. "I love the concept behind dance-based reality shows. But somehow I'm not comfortable judging them. I cannot pin-point negatives in an artiste. So if the show makers allow me to tell only good things, only then you'll see me a part of a reality show. Such shows give you recognition and fame, which are essential to survive in the industry. In our time, we had to move from director to director to request them to give us a chance. But today, if you are talented, filmmakers will approach you," Prabhu says.
He shares about his personal struggle too. "I faced numerous rejections, but it only made me stronger. In school, I was rejected from cultural performances because I was a weak student. In the industry, I was rejected because I probably didn't have an impactful surname. Here, it's easy to become a star but very difficult to maintain that position," he says.
Finally, speaking about MP, Prabhu says, "This is my first visit to the state and I find it very beautiful and clean. The cities are very well maintained." About MP being the new 'it' destination with B-wood's filmmakers, he adds, "If my script demands similar landscapes, I'm definitely going to come down to MP for my film's shoot."
