Ila Arun's real life on reel with BBC

Bollywood actor and singer, Ila Arun, will be one of the featured personalities in a new BBC documentary series Down Memory Lane. The episode will focus on Ila's life - the shaping years, her struggles, her career - in a 30 minutes format. The series is to be on the life of famous personalities, theatre persons, artistes and actors who began their careers in small towns.

Ila, along with actor Vinay Pathak, the host of the show, shot some light-hearted scenes right here, in Jaipur, walking through the city's street markets and shopping. "I felt I'd become a young girl again, the one who used to roam around in these markets with sisters buying lehariya and bandhani dupattas," shared Ila as she relived memorable moments from her childhood. Ila and Pathak even enjoyed a rickshaw ride in the walled city, before reaching her school.

Upon reaching the school's familiar setting, and while sitting with some of the present body of students, Ila nostalgically recalled the decade she spent sheltered by its walls. She told us that the school had a profound role in shaping her personal and professional life. "Today I am what I am because of the initial training I got in my school, Maharaja Girls Senior Secondary School, in Kishanpole Bazaar. It's the first girls' school that was opened by the royal family some 150 years ago to promote girls' education in Rajasthan."

But the old building's dilapidated condition left her sad. "This one is a heritage building. I used to feel so good when I sat in my classroom. But at the same time, it also made me feel sad that the school, which shaped our lives, is itself in such a bad state. The government is not doing anything to restore its condition. It should be handed over to the Archeological department to be restored to its former glory," suggested Ila.

Ila also recalled fond memories of Ravindra Manch, as she said, "I can recall learning the art of theatre with renowned people in Ravindra Manch, which used to be the only hub of theatre in the city. I was so happy to know that Ravindra Manch is celebrating its golden jubilee this year. They wanted to invite me for the celebrations, but when the makers of the documentary approached them for shooting some scenes, and the authorities refused as they wanted a hefty amount for the shoot. So, unfortunately, we could not shoot there. It's little sad that even after knowing that the producers wanted to shoot some scenes with me, authorities didn't permit it."
