Gagan Mishra was recently awarded the Yuva Natya Nirdeshak award at the Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards, 2013, in Jodhpur, for his contribution towards promoting theatre among the youth. Elated on receiving the award from the chief minister Ashok Gehlot, Mishra admitted that he owed a lot to the once acclaimed Jaipur theatre. "Jaipur used to be an acclaimed centre for theatre. Today, it pains me to see that platform stagnating," he says.
However, Mishra adds, "Thanks to the move of clubbing dramatics with school curriculum, theatre in the city will get a shot in the arm in the years to come." Mishra himself has initiated a series of theatre activities that aims at introducing dramatics in schools not only in Rajasthan, but also in Chandigarh, Ludhiana and Delhi.
Theatre a shortcut to films Mishra, who not only conducts theatre classes across schools but also organizes several summer and winter camps for adolescents and kids, feels that parents no longer harbour inhibition for such workshops. "Today, parents want their kids to do theatre. And that's quite encouraging. But many a time they do so with the intention of grooming their kids for TV reality shows or for personality development," he says. According to him, many use theatre as a shortcut to the Hindi film industry. "Jaipur theatre has given many stars to both the television and film industry, and perhaps has kindled the hope of theatre artistes of making it big in the film industry. Such a mindset is not healthy. This in the long run neither helps the artiste nor theatre," he adds.
Jaipur theatre needs better, original scripts Jaipur theatre might be ailing but it has its own charm and audience. If original plays, better scripts and direction are introduced, then the industry will grow, feels Mishra. "Theatre is an integral part of our culture, and if we market our plays well, I am sure that Jaipur theatre will mature, both in terms of quality and content," he says.
