'Slumdog' and 'Life of Pi' actors bag lead roles in H’wood

While Danny Boyle's Oscar-winning film 'Slumdog Millionaire' put Dev Patel and Freida Pinto on the map, their co-star Madhur Mittal — who played the older Salim in the film — was also noticed by filmmakers in the West.

Madhur will now be seen in a lead role along with Life Of Pi star Suraj Sharma in Craig Gillespie's Million Dollar Arm. It's a biographical sports film based on the true story of baseball pitchers Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel, who are of Indian origin. While Suraj will play Rinku, Madhur will essay the role of Dinesh. The film has been shot in the US, Mumbai and Delhi.

Giving the two company is Mad Men actor Jon Hamm, who was in Mumbai some time back for the shoot. Madhur is a Mumbai boy and Suraj hails from Delhi. The two get along very well. Says Madhur, "Suraj is unlike a Delhi boy. He is half-Marathi half-Malayali! Besides, we had a lot of things in common." Both have plans of shifting base to the US. Suraj is in fact studying filmmaking at NYU, while Madhur is in talks for another Hollywood film to be directed by Titanic actor Bill Paxton.
