'I don't sensationalise my films'

We met filmmaker Nagesh Kukunoor at his Bandra office and what followed was a candid conversation about his dislike for the publicity machinery, his upcoming film and an unconventional personal life.

You are in exile... (Laughs) It's not a modus operandi. It's not an exile. I was always like this, making films quietly and talking about them only when it mattered. But nowadays, the landscape has changed. Honestly, I am finding it difficult to grapple with the situation- this whole shouting business with the extensive publicity campaigns. I am just not comfortable in that space. I never wanted to sell myself.
We believe that your next film Lakshmi is ready... Almost. I support a NGO that rescues sex workers and during my interaction with them a story fell into place. But it was fleshed out when I met Subhalaxmi, the girl from Andhra Pradesh who took her traffickers to Court and won the case. Monali Thakur (who sang Sawar Loon in Lootera), plays the protagonist. Ram Kapoor, Shefali Shah and Satish Kaushik play important parts.
How did you zero in on Monali Thakur? Purely by accident. I saw her at a party and I kept staring at her. I went up to her and introduced myself. She told me that she is keen on acting and I asked her to audition for the role. She also has an amazing voice and she has sung for the film too, just one song though.
A film on sex workers, so are you ready for an A certificate? Absolutely. No chance that I can get a U for this one, unless I chop off the whole film. Lakshmi has its share of expletives, the story is very in-your-face and more importantly, it's the truth. Note well, I never sensationalise my films.
Would you agree that your graph went downhill after Iqbal? Not after Iqbal. I was happy with Dor, though yes it could have done better if it had been marketed well. I was happy with 8X10 Tasveer too. But I was disappointed with Bombay To Bangkok and Mod.
The grapevine is that you are in a relationship with Elahi Heptullah... This talk has been doing the rounds since 15 years. But people are still interested to know if anything is going on between us. We are not seeing each other. We are not a couple. We are not even romantically inclined towards each other.
Is the denial an attempt to hide the relationship? Why would I hide it for so long? My private life is definitely off the beaten track-but it is not with Elahi.
So what's the game plan for Lakshmi? I will go back the Iqbal way. I will have multiple screenings before the release.
Is it not a risky proposition, the film might draw negative word-of-mouth before its release. Risk zaroor hai, but before or after, the reactions will be the same. And I am confident about the film.
So, you are throwing yourself into the publicity ring? (Laughs) Yes, you can say that. I will go that extra mile now. Today, a private person like Aamir too has to get involved in publicity campaigns. And I have also decided to make two films every year now- one from my heart, one for commerce.
