Shahid’s poster inspired from director’s past

With a real braveheart's story behind the narrative, Hansal Mehta's Shahid is already being touted as a hard-hitting film. But it's not just the storyline that is creating the buzz. The director has released a shocking poster of his film, which shows the face of actor Raj Kumar blackened by people who mean to threaten and insult him. Raj Kumar plays the character of lawyer and human rights activist Shahid Azmi, who devoted his life to help people arrested and put in jails without evidence get acquitted. He was assassinated in Mumbai in 2010.

Though the poster depicts a scene from the film where Azmi is attacked by goons and his face blackened, we've learnt that it is actually based on an incident from Mehta's real life. In 2000, when the director released Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar, his office was vandalised and his face blackened by the 'moral' police. We hear that Hansal relived his personal horrors through this scene.

"He has shown great emotional strength in reliving the shock, insult and humiliation that he faced despite no fault of his," says a source close to the director.

The film releases October 18.
