Several actresses from the Tamil film industry have turned politicians. Right from the present Chief Minister, J Jayalalithaa, to veteran actresses like Venniraadai Nirmala, Jaya Prada to Kuyili, actresses have not only lent star value to heated electoral debates, but have also actively campaigned for their respective political parties or contested for it.

Khushbu
Khushbu joined politics just before the 2010 Assembly elections by announcing her decision to be a part of the DMK. She joined politics after emerging victorious in a four-year-long court case on her comments on pre-marital and safe sex. The actress enrolled herself as a prime member of the party and has since then been a visible face of the DMK.

The actress has stirred up many controversies too, thanks to her outspoken nature. Early in 2013, her reply to a question on Stalin's succession in the party landed her in trouble. She has been one of the star campaigners for the DMK in the recent Lok Sabha elections.

Divya Spandana
The Vaaranam Aayiram actress is, to her credit, one of India's youngest MPs at 30. Divya Spandana joined the Congress in 2011 and has been the face of the youth wing of the party. The Golden Girl of Kannada film industry took an active part in politics in 2013 when she won the MP seat defeating her nearest rival, JD(S) candidate C S Puttaraju, in the bypoll to Mandya seat in Lok Sabha. Divya Spandana has since then been an active member of the party and thus, devoted more time to party work, rather than her film career.

Veteran Kannada actor and politician Ambareesh reportedly slammed Divya Spandana recently for the way she has handled politics in her constituency. The actress is seeking a re-election from the Mandya constituency. Of late, there have been situations where the actress has had to abandon the campaigns as the party workers were not organized. Ambareesh reportedly said that Divya Spandana lacked political maturity and that updates on micro-blogging sites were not helping the people of the constituency.

Namitha
Actress Namitha recently brought the spotlight on herself when she said that she was sure about her decision to enter politics. The actress, however, has been tight-lipped about the party she would join. She was reportedly quoted that three parties had accorded her a warm welcome and that she was yet to decide which party to join. Though the actress claimed that she would be campaigning soon in the current elections, there has been no development on the issue so far.

The actress is going through a rough patch in her film career and offers are drying up. Namitha now maintains that she wants to give back something to the people of Tamil Nadu who have given her so much love and adoration.

Nagma
She was recently in the news for pushing away the hand of a man, reportedly a Congress MLA from Uttar Pradesh, who is said to have walked too close to her, grabbed her face and reportedly planted a kiss on her cheek. Nagma entered politics in 2009 and is the Congress candidate from Meerut in the current Lok Sabha elections. She also hit the headlines for slapping a man who allegedly groped her at a public meeting in Meerut.

Her recent campaign in Bareilly ended in a fiasco when, even before alighting from the helicopter, she learnt that her programme was changed. She refused to come out of the chopper when she was reportedly told that she would have to address the meeting for 20 minutes. Her party unit in Bareilly, on the other hand, had published about a road show. Nagma has been part of many hit Tamil films like Kadhalan, Love Birds and Mettukudi.

Roja
Roja Selvamani, once a leading actress in the industry, took a dive into politics when she joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and served as the Woman Wing President of the Telugu Mahila Party. She quit TDP in 2009 and joined the Congress Party. She left the latter too and is now part of YS Jaganmohan Reddy's YSR Congress. The actress is contesting from the Nagari constituency in the current Lok Sabha elections.

Interestingly, Roja had contested from Nagari on a TDP ticket in 2004 and had lost the battle. During the 2009 state elections, she contested from Chandragiri and was defeated in that election too.

Vindhya
Vindhya shot to fame with the movie Sangamam and has been part of several movies like Vishwanathan Ramamoorthy and Charlie Chaplin. Vindhya, who was recently seeking votes for an AIADMK candidate, was booked as neither she nor her party functionaries had sought permission from the Election Commission for the meeting. The actress had campaigned for the party in the 2011 Assembly elections as well.
