Actor-anchor Shonali Nagrani, who is currently enjoying hosting an IPL analysis show in the UK, spoke to us about being a female anchor, and why Bigg Boss memories still haunt her. Excerpts from the chat:
I WASN'T EXPECTED TO BE AS TECHNICAL WHILE HOSTING CRICKET IN INDIA AS I AM EXPECTED TO BE IN THE UK On my show, we talk before the match, during the match and after the match. It's very technical and cricket-centric, and there is no room for entertainment in a cricket show. You delve deep into the nuances of the game. It's not about introducing the next stand-up comedy act or the next cheerleading performance. I wasn't expected to be as technical while hosting cricket in India as I am expected to be in the UK.

I have grown up in a family of cricket lovers, who always felt that they play better cricket than the Indian cricket team. Every time they watch a match, they are like, `What a stupid shot', `What an idiot'. I have always taken a keen interest in the game. But here I am supposed to know the players, the team composition and almost everything. For instance, there is a player, Ben Dunk, who's played the Big Bash in Australia and was declared the Man Of The Tournament there, which is why Mumbai Indians brought him home. A lot of research has gone into gaining all this knowledge. I have reached a stage where if you don't show me the face of the batsman, and just show me the batting style, I will know who the batsman is.
I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED LIVE SPORTS AND LIVE TV Sometimes on a show, when I ask questions, I want to answer them myself. It's getting harder for me to ask questions, because it's getting harder for me to not answer them. Since 2006, I have been doing one big tournament every year. I have always loved live sports and live TV . It's a different thrill. There's no room for error.
It's much harder and challenging, that's why I enjoy it. MY FAVOURITE PLAYER IS VIRENDER SEHWAG My favourite player is Virender Sehwag. When he was in form, it was always a treat to watch him hit the ball. His hand-eye coordination is amazing. His game depends on his hands, eyes and the timing of the ball. With his vision problem, his timing and form have been affected.

I HAVE BECOME THE UNOFFICIAL FACE OF THE IPL IN THE UK My co-presenters have changed, experts have changed, but it's been four years and I am continuing with the show. I have become the unofficial face of the IPL in the UK.
IPL GETS A VIEWERSHIP SECOND ONLY TO THE ASHES The Ashes, which is their biggest tournament, enjoys a viewership of over 10 lakh, whereas the IPL is watched by close to 7,50,000 people. There is a massive Indian and Asian population there.
Therefore, most English cricketers want to be part of the IPL because the money is really good. It's like a must-do now to play in the IPL, but the English players can't, because they can't leave their country duties. It's summer time, which is their cricket season, so they can't be part of the IPL.
IT'S NOT EASY BEING A FEMALE CRICKET PRESENTER Being a woman, I have to work harder. If a man makes a mistake, it's a mistake. But if a woman makes a mistake, they ask, `Why is she even there?' So, I have to work harder. I am not someone who has played the game. People say things like, `She has never played the game. How can she talk about the game?' I like dressing up, and I am not going to look boring by slipping into a pair of pants and a blazer, just to please them. My knowledge has to earn respect for me, not the way I dress up. People have told me that they are quite impressed by my knowledge.
Now, I feel that pleasing Indians is a lot easier than pleasing people in the UK. In India, you ask safe questions, look pretty and your job is done. If you know the game well, it's a bonus. Here, if you are a sports presenter, you have to know the game well. It's an unforgiving place. There's no room for error. Cricket is by far the most complicated game with so many rules and regulations. Women ask me, `Why can't we have every match in the same stadium?', and I have to tell them that the quality of the pitch decides whether you play more spinners or fast bowlers there.
I STAYED AWAY FROM ALL THE FIGHTS IN BIGG BOSS
Most of the fights inside the Bigg Boss house happened just to draw attention. Nobody was serious about the issue they were fighting for. People were creating issues to attract the camera. But I stayed away from all the fights. I was quite diplomatic because I am not someone who would fuss over dirty utensils. There hasn't been a single day when I haven't thought about the Bigg Boss days. When I see someone from the Bigg Boss house, bad memories come back to me. Bigg Boss brings out the worst in you. However, I am in touch with a few contestants like Siddharth Bhardwaj, Lakshmi, and Shakti.
I HAVE BECOME AN AUNTY NOW After marriage, I have become more responsible and I think about the future more than the present. The sad part is that all the kids in my society have started calling me aunty now.
From Shonali didi, I have become Shonali aunty now.
That's quite painful. Now, I try and avoid those kids!
