From being India's most loved bahu to becoming the youngest person on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet, Smriti Irani has come a long way. Hard work: When Smriti sold beauty productsWhatever Smriti Irani did, it gave her instant popularity and fame whether it was her work on the small screen or her journey in the field of politics. But the newly appointed HRD Minister's life has not been a bed of roses. Born in a conservative Punjabi-Bengali family, Smriti started earning soon after completing her 10th standard. She was paid Rs.200 for her first job where she promoted a beauty product. According to one of her interviews, Smriti shocked her parents when she told them about her plans to join Miss India contest. She participated in 1998 Miss India contest for which she borrowed Rs.1 lakh from her dad promising to repay it. Smriti couldn't make it to the finals of the contest but without losing much hope, the actress tuned politician came to Mumbai. Reportedly she worked as a waitress in McDonald's Bandra outlet to support herself while auditioning for films and TV shows. Soon lady luck blessed her and Smriti got her first break where she replaced Neelam Kothari as the host of an episode of a show 'Ooh La La La'. Her hard work paid off and TV czarina Ekta Kapoor noticed her and the rest is history.

The never to say die attitude:
Smriti, who is a well known TV actress and a politician today, never dreamed of becoming an actress. Acting happened to her by chance. In one of her interviews, the actress was quoted saying, that she was an excellent singer during her school days and that she has never been overconfident in life. While narrating one of her childhood experiences the actress shared in the interview that she was recongnised in her school and other schools because of her singing talent. But just before one of her most important singing competitions the actress lost her voice and realised that she couldn't sing. However, Smriti didn't lose hope and excelled in sports. This is not the only example, reports also state that Smriti always wanted to be a journalist but her world came crashing down when a news channel she interviewed for rejected her. But instead of sitting and crying about it the actress continued to struggle for the better.

Realisation of moral responsilities: When Smriti refused to propagate superstition: Smriti Irani, has always been careful about everything she does, especially after she became a Member of Parliament. So when her good friend and queen of daily soaps Ekta Kapoor approached her to play a courtesan, she very politely turned it down. The role was then played another Balaji loyalist Sakshi Tanwar while Smriti featured in a different story in the same show. Ek Thi Nayika was Smriti's comeback to TV which she agreed to do only because of Ekta but she learnt that in the story she will have to play a nautch girl who meets a daayan (witch). She requested Ekta to give her some other story that didn't involve singing or dancing, to which Ekta agreed. Smriti realised that being a politician she can't propagate superstition, which is why the story she acted in did not feature a daayan.

She runs an NGO: The actress turned politician has always been working for the betterment of the society and people. Smriti, has been actively involved in social development programs. She runs an NGO which deals with providing water solutions to villages. She has also actively worked and fought for women rights. After the Delhi rape incident, Smriti was one of those few women politicians who raised their voice against the failed system and demanded women security in the country.

Standing up for right: When she raised her voice against Narendra Modi: India's new Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently showed his trust in Smriti Irani when he appointed her the new HRD minister. In fact he also faced a lot of criticism when he announced his decision of appointing Smriti as the new HRD minister. However, they were always not on the same terms. Smriti, who began her political career with Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) in 2003 is the same person who raised her voice against Narendra Modi after the Gujarat riots. In December 2004, Smriti announced 'fast unto death' against Narendra Modi. She demanded that he should resign from his position as Gujarat's Chief Minster and blamed him for BJP's electoral losses. Reportedly, she later changed her mind after being warned by BJP's central leadership.
