India's most popular pop artist, Sophie Choudry is a woman who lives on her own terms. Known for her magical voice and elegance, she is a nothing less than a visual treat on stage. Currently seen as a competitor in 'Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa', Sophie's 'never say never' spirit and positive approach has further widened her fan following. TOI gets in touch with this diva to talk about her journey on 'Jhalak...' and lots more.

How would you like to describe your journey on Jhalak so far?
It's been one of the toughest challenges I've ever undertaken, physically and mentally! You need nerves of steel to go out there each week, perform and be judged! I was most affected by the performance in which the dancer blanked and didn't catch me because I fell on my spine and my existing back injury became ten times worse. But I want to stay on this platform and want to keep fighting for my place! I am loving the experience! I feel I'm learning, growing and improving and that's what this journey is all about. Unlike some others on the show, I'm not a trained dancer, but Deepak and I have tried a new style each week, we have constantly taken risks and done something different because that's where the real challenge lies. To be able to dance in as many styles as possible! And I'm eternally grateful to the audience and my family who have been so supportive and kept me going!

Who do you think is your toughest competitor on the show?
The top 6 this season is the strongest and toughest ever and let's not forget this show is as much about talent as about your fan following! I think each contestant is a tough competitor right now because everyone is performing well!

Do you see yourself winning the show?
I think when you enter any contest you do it with the aim of winning so of course even I would like to win because we have put in so much hard work! Whether I win or not, it's hard to say, but I really hope that through my journey I have managed to win love and respect from the audience! That was my main goal! The audience doesn't get to see my live shows which is my main work. They see me as a red carpet diva , singer and occasional actress .. I wanted them to get to know me as the person and performer I am!

You were close to Remo even before you came on the show. What do you think makes him different from other choreographers?
First things first, knowing him from before hasn't helped because I feel he is even stricter with us! I worked with Remo on my first solo video 'Le Le Mera Dil'. I hadn't even moved to India at that time. I just came to shoot the video back in 2002. What I loved about him even then was his cool, calm temperament and his immense talent. He knows how to make something commercial yet fresh! He is one of the few people who has not changed at all in spite of all the success and I truly admire him for that! I've worked with him on at least five songs and it's always been an amazing experience!

Tell us something about Madhuri Dixit and Karan Johar. About their pattern of judging and the experience of performing in front of them.
It's such an honour to perform in front of them. I feel when it comes to comments about an act or a person, Karan Johar is just so correct and he is just so much fun on the show! He has heart and wit and that's a killer combo! I think he and Madhuri Dixit are more instinctive when it comes to judging. For me the biggest high is that one of the most beautiful, graceful women in India calls me beautiful and graceful every single week. It's crazy and the biggest compliment ever! And because the judges are so encouraging I want to work harder to impress them!

Tell us something about the craziest fan you ever met.
I have had quite a few over the years but thanks to 'Jhalak...' I have a new fan following too. The teens who are obsessed with my pout. They all ask me to pose for pics with my pout! Its not even something I ever thought of before. People have always commented on my lips but I have never consciously pouted. But I think I will now have to trademark the "Sophie Pout"!
