'Reality shows connect with common man’s dreams'

Hemant Ruprell and Ranjeet Thakur, who joined hands to form Frames Production Company three years ago, have made many award-winning non-fiction shows since then — Dance India Dance 3, DID L'il Masters 2, DID Dance Ke Superkids, Nach Baliye 5, Nach Baliye 6 and Shriman v/s Shrimati among others.

Here are excerpts from a conversation with Hemant and Ranjeet, who are all set to celebrate their company's third anniversary...

What have been your achievements in the last three years?
Ranjeet: We have executed top-rated reality shows —across genres — on national/regional and digital platforms. We have also bagged eight awards for our efforts.

What is the kind of research that goes into making dance-based reality shows? Do you feel celebs drive a reality show?
Hemant: Reality shows are all about connecting with the common man's dreams. Purity and relativity of content make them a success, celebs coming on TV is no more unique.

What kind of shows are you planning in the future?
Ranjeet: Audiences have become extremely intelligent in choosing and rejecting shows. They like good storytelling even in non-fiction shows. We are working towards creating formats that connect reality and fiction.

How will you tap the rapidly growing regional space?
Hemant: Our focus is to keep tapping regional subjects for different regions. Audiences connect to a regional channel, because they feel it's their own culture and language. Our focus is on highlighting the essence of every culture.

With reality shows being so expensive, do you think regional channels can afford them?
Ranjeet: We feel there might be a drastic change in the way reality is being looked at. The cost factor needs to be controlled so that non-fiction becomes a more viable business option. Our company has ventured into regional sphere with kids-based dance reality show, MAD (Manjhey Asal Dancer) and Mrs Annapurna.
