Movies are usually made to entertain the audience. On the contrary, there are some other movies which are made to educate the masses and spread social awareness. Films like U Me Aur Hum, Taare Zameen Par, Ghajini have medical backgrounds, while a few of them pour light on the harsh realities like AIDS/HIV. On World AIDS Day, we list a few movies which touched the issue of HIV/AIDS which has been largely ignored by mainstream filmmakers. Not only movies but few Bollywood stars are also vocal about the issue. Let's have a look...

Ranveer Singh chose the coolest way to spread awareness and promote safe sex. The actor is a brand ambassador of Durex condoms. The ad is not sleazy and gives the right message. Ranveer delivers the message flawlessly without sounding nasty. In the ad, Ranveer Singh sings a song, 'Let's do the rex.' It sounds as if he is endorsing condoms for safe sex rather than endorsing the brand alone. With rise in the cases of sex-related diseases and HIV/AIDS, Ranveer has chosen the right product to spread awareness.

Salman Khan has several fans across the globe. One of the personalities he managed to impress is American actor and activist Richard Gere who spoke on Koffee With Karan about Salman Khan being vocal about HIV/AIDS and spreading awareness in public. He said that Salman Khan did an amazing job on AIDS awareness day by standing beside an HIV-infected man and conveying to his fans that he loves the him (HIV-infected man) and if they don't love him too, that means they don't love Salman Khan. Salman also asked his fans not to watch his movies if that was the case.

My Brother Nikhil is certainly one of the best movies about AIDS in Bollywood. Sanjay Suri, an underrated actor, gave a great performance as an AIDS patient who is isolated by his family and girlfriend. His only hope is his sister (great performance by Juhi Chawla), who stands by him through thick and thin. The movie also sensitively depicts gay relationships portraying gay men as normal human beings who also deserve a place in society. Though the end is tragic, the hope lies in the message it sends out to AIDS victims, that there are people who care for them, and who are sensitive to their feelings.
