According to a Mumbai Mirror report, Sanjay Dutt, who was granted a 14-day furlough last December, reached Yerwada Central Jail in Pune on January 8, 2015, and returned home a few hours later after he managed to get "deemed extension." He can stay home until the authorities decide on another date, the report stated. Confirming the same to Mirror, his lawyer Rizwan Merchant said, "The deemed extension arises based on a statement made by the Home Minister. He said surrender is not necessary until the police gives its report and the authorities decide on Dutt's furlough extension plea. We reached Yerwada and verified this with the authorities after which Sanjay decided to return home." He explained that an application for another 14-day extension was filed before the expiry of the furlough, the report further states. Asked when the actor will return to prison, Merchant said it would be on the date the authorities decide upon, read the Mumbai Mirror report.

According to reports, actor Sanjay Dutt, who was on a two-week furlough from his term in prison, was to return to jail on January 8 when his leave ended, said his lawyer. Prison authorities had yet to decide on the furlough extension plea made by the actor. Dutt's lawyer, Hitesh Jain, told TOI he was informed that the Khar police have not even received the file from Pune despite the application having been made a week ago. "The papers haven't reached Mumbai from the Pune prison, which is a three-hour ride away, though technically the law requires action to be taken against a convict on furlough only if he fails to return after 28 days end, on the 29th day, Dutt will abide by the permission in hand and return to prison on January 8. It is the price a celebrity pays," Hitesh was quoted as saying.

According to report in Mid-day, Sanjay Dutt's lawyer Hitesh Jain has confirmed that Sanjay Dutt's leave of furlough had been sanctioned and the actor was out of jail. Sanjay Dutt has been serving a 42-month sentence at Pune's Yerwada jail after he was convicted for illegal possession of weapons in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. According to a report in Mid-day, there was a provision for the two-week leave to be extended by a fortnight. So, will the actor be applying for an extension? Dutt's laywer has said they will think about it later. The last time Sanjay came out of prison was in December last year when he was granted a month-long parole. It was extended by 30 days in January on account of his wife Manyata's illness. Prior to that, he was on a month-long leave of furlough on medical grounds.

Sanjay Dutt's sister Priya Dutt, who is an acclaimed politician like her late father Sunil Dutt, is also facing a bad phase post her brother's jail term. Two-time MP Priya contested on the Congress seat in 2014 general elections from Mumbai North Central constituency but lost to first time contestant Poonam Mahajan Rao, daughter of late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan. The reasons behind her loss are speculated to be Sanjay Dutt's parole controversy which emerged ahead of the elections.
