Rakeysh shoots hoops in SRCC

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra was in Delhi's Shri Ram College of Commerce on Tuesday as the chief guest, to open the college's famed sports festival. Never mind that the rainy, chaotic day took Rakeysh "a lifetime to reach the college from the airport".

"I had gone to SRCC for the Milkha Singh biopic, but we ended up shooting in the Miranda House auditorium. Before that, I had gone to my college in 2009. They'd given me an award, and that is the only one I keep on my table," he said, and added, "I think college was far more enjoyable in my time than it is now, and it laid the foundations of my filmmaking. That sense of making friends, choices, the independence, meant so much in those days. And the thing about college in those days was the freedom it gave from a very closed kind of school jao-wapas aao-padho-so jao lifestyle. The sense of liberation we had, that sort of happens in Class VIII these days, so by the time kids reach college, the sense of wonder is gone."

Asked if this was linked to promoting Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, he answered wryly, "I have a life outside films, you know. Can't I be called as chief guest somewhere without being linked to my film? But the fact that I'm making a film on a sportsperson, that might be the synergy here."
