Madhoo, who received a series of obscene letters in November 2012, had lodged a complaint with the Malabar Hill police, who suspected that the sender was an insider from the extended family.
Police sources familiar with the developments said Bollywood actor Juhi Chawla's husband Jay Mehta helped Madhoo by getting her husband Anand Shah and the sender to "amicably settle the matter."
While Mehta could not be reached for comment, Madhoo told TOI she was unaware of a settlement between her husband and the sender. She, however, admitted that the letters had stopped and she was relieved.
"The obscene letters I was frequently getting have stopped coming completely and I am in a happy space today," she told this newspaper, talking about the letters that she received till December 2012.
"The initial days were nerve wracking. Thankfully my family rallied around me and asked me not to worry. My husband was very understanding. But the sender was clearly a pervert with an idle mind. I told myself that the contents of the letters speak about him, not me."
Madhoo's ordeal began in October 2012 when letters containing explicit photos of the actor started arriving at the family's Malabar Hill residence. The letters were also sent to the central excise office, the local police station and even to the school where her children study.
In their complaint to the police, the couple told the Malabar Hill police that the letters mentioned addresses -one of certain A Mafatlal and another of Mohammad Shakeel Qureshi, an acquaintance of the family. Both the family and the police treated this with caution and gave the benefit of doubt to the two people as they found the addresses on the letters to be fake.
Shah later told the police that he suspected a Baroda-based businessman to be behind the letters. Shah said he had registered a non-cognisable complaint against the businessman for allegedly threatening him following a deal gone bad. But the police could not find any evidence against the businessman either, which is when they began suspecting an insider. With even surveillance footage from the post offices where the letters were sent from did not yield any results, the probe soon hit a dead-end.
"The investigations had already reached a dead-end," said an officer from the Malabar Hill police station."And now with the family telling us they do not want to pursue the matter further, we will close the case with the opinion that though the incident may have occurred, there is no evidence to substantiate it."
Zone II DCP Nisar Tamboli, said, "There are no further leads in the case and it has reached a dead end. But the investigations from our side are still on and appropriate action will be taken soon."
