Being an actor was not an advantage for me: Smriti Irani

Smriti Irani on her return to television and balancing acting and politics

She came from Delhi to Mumbai 16 years ago with one dream — to make it on her own. And today, Smriti Irani is more than happy with her decision. From being a Miss India contestant, becoming TV's favourite bahu — Tulsi — to being nominated as a Member of Parliament, she has come a long way. And while viewers thought Smriti had quit acting for politics, she's back on TV, hosting a special crime-based series...

Now that you are back on the small screen as a host, would you also do a TV serial...maybe something like Tulsi?
(Laughs) You'll have to contact Ekta Kapoor for that! Only she can create a character of that proportion. About acting, yes, if a script is good, why not? But an amazing script comes only once in a while.

Today, would acting be purely for the passion or would you consider it your bread and butter?
I've thankfully earned my bread and butter through Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. I have not splurged. I am happy that I am a debt-free actor today. If I take up an acting assignment now, it would be for the sheer delight of being part of the project, of wanting to portray a character to the best of my ability, that would connect with the audiences.

It's been a rather eventful journey from Delhi to Mumbai for you. What did you have in mind when you first moved to this city?
I was always very headstrong and had just one thing in mind — that I had to make it on my own. I remember everyone telling me I was crazy to move to this big city all alone. Actually, when I look back, I agree with them. But it worked well for me. I have got my sense of self-worth, my confidence, my family, everything from this city.

You went through your fair share of struggle?
Of course. Even today when I pass by Linking Road, I proudly remember the time when I swept the floor at a popular food chain outlet there. I preferred working there as it helped me run for my auditions.

Talking about politics, the fact is that seasoned politicians tend to have a negative impression of actors-turned-politicians.
Part of the blame lies on those who didn't pursue politics seriously. Once given a responsibility, you are expected to deliver. I have always said being an actor was not an advantage, but a disadvantage for me. People presume actors are not serious, not committed and may not be well-read. Only hard work can change that perception.

Are you in touch with your TV colleagues? Is there a change in their behaviour?
Some of us from Kyunki... met and it was like I had never been away from the industry. We were all cribbing about shooting schedules, delays, TRP issues, etc. Just that this time, I wasn't the one going through it. So, I could just sit there and smile. I'm in touch with people from the industry, including technicians. If there's anything I can do in my current capacity, I would be happy to. After all, I am what I am today because of this industry.

You're back on TV with Savdhan India. You missed acting?
You end up missing things when you have nothing else to do. I have always been busy. My political responsibilities increased in the last two years and it was important for me to settle in. But, I have, in the past three years, participated in different mediums. I did a Telugu and a Bengali film. As a performer, I have always been on the lookout for something different. After daily soaps, I did theatre, a radio play, films and now I'm doing a TV show again, it's like a full circle. I took up this four-episode special series because the concept of common man fighting the system and emerging victorious appealed to me.
