I would love to come to India: Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift on muses, music and her music-making process. And yes... the possibility of India featuring on an upcoming world tour

What's with you and colours?
Well, the name of my latest album (Red) came about, because one of my favourite songs is titled that and it talks about a relationship spiralling out of control. A relationship where it's harmful and thrilling and unhealthy, all at the same time. When I was putting the album together, I realised that it held so many emotions, all the intensity that comes with love, infatuation, anger, sadness and visually, I see these emotions as an angry red color. So it just made sense to call this album what I eventually did.

Your biggest hits are break-up anthems. What gives?
The songwriting process really helps me to reflect on things, especially relationships. Sometimes when I'm writing a song, I'll realise something that I probably wouldn't have otherwise. Also I guess at this age you're learning about love and falling in and out of it and all your feelings are so intense. I think my songs are popular because they really hit home with so many teenagers who are dealing with the same thing. Everyone goes through break-ups, it's something that people can really connect to.

Red sold 1.2 million records in the first week of release in the US alone. Do numbers matter much to you? Or at all?
What's really important to me is that I make my fans happy with the music that I make. I love doing what I do and when I'm writing a songs and recording it, I'm already happy to be doing that. I'm not really thinking about numbers during that time. It's a great feeling when your song has gone on the charts but it's an even better feeling when someone stops me on the street and tells me they love my song. Or when I get texts from people I don't hear from often, telling me that the songs is great. It makes me very proud of what I do, it's a great feeling.

You started out with country music. With your latest album going decidedly mainstream (more pop than ever?), should your oldest fans be worried?
I don't think they should be worried at all. In fact, I hope that they are surprised, I want it to be a pleasant surprise to my fans. I've really tried to do something different and make an album that would stand out from the first three. It's important to me to create an album that can stand its own. At the stage that I am in my life and career, it's time for me to explore things and challenge myself and do something new. I don't want to get stuck in a comfort zone. Red is a really special album for me and I really hope that my fans will look forward to seeing a different side of me.

Speak Now chronicled your school years. Which part of your life does your latest album explore?
The latter represents what my life is right now, I would say. It's also about the universal experience of falling in love and going through break-ups and being in relationships. It also represents the part of my life where I'm starting to do new things. This whole album is so different from what I've done in the past.

You don't collaborate much with people (Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol and Ed Sheeran being the rare exceptions on this album). Why not more since it is the norm rather than the exception now? Any we should look forward to?
I don't really look out for collaborations, I'm happy to work on my own songs. It's just something I've always done. With Ed Sheeran, it was kind of a coincidence. I heard his music in Australia and we happened to reach out to each other's managements at about the same time. I've been lucky to collaborate with really talented people, and I may do it again. It's all about finding who sounds good with you.

Fans really look forward to your music videos. How often and how much are you involved in their making?
My fans inspire me everyday — to know that so many people love and listen to something you've created, is overwhelming. They're definitely involved in the way I make music. I hear a lot of stories from people, like girls will come up to me and tell me about something that happened to them, a guy they like, lots of different things. When someone tells you about their life it becomes a part of you and I think that naturally comes out when I'm writing a song or making a video.

Can we expect India to feature on the itinerary whenever you decide to tour?
I haven't planned anything yet, but I would love to come down and perform, or even just come for a visit.
