When Nana Patekar speaks, you listen with rapt attention, and when he's in a rare hilarious mood, you can't help admiring the easy wit of the man, which tends to enthrall you. TOI experienced this, when Nana came calling to Nagpur to promote the cause of Baba Amte's Lok Biradari Prakalp and had the fourth estate eating out of his hand the moment he said : "I'm trying to find myself. And whenever I visit Baba Amte's ashram, I feel how miniscule my own identity is. So, I go back to Hemalkasa, and live the simple life of tribals and Amte family, and go back rejuvenated. Hence, if I'm trying to help raise funds for the hospital for tribals in Hemalkasa, it's a very selfish pursuit - dedicated to self discovery." Excerpts....
You are trying to highlight the tribals' plight in your forthcoming film. As a revoloutionary actor, any plans to address the dilemma of Vidarbha's farmers too?
When I got the chance to play Dr Prakash Amte in the multilingual film Dr Prakash Amte, a real hero, I was thrilled because I have known Baba, Prakash and their entire family for decades. Honestly, despite shooting at Hemalkasa for days on end, I don't want the shoot to end because it's such a beautiful experience living with the nature and the tribals, who lead such a simply lifestyle and fight adversity like true warriors. Of course, I would like to address the issue of farmers through my craft - my films. But, the sad part is that such films win awards, but don't get any rewards at the BO.
You are playing Dr Prakash Amte, who is such a calm man, whereas you and Salman Khan are known to be the angry men of B'town...
(Laughs) Oh, but that angry part is my screen image. I'm a very simple and calm man, but when the camera is switched on, acting begins. And I'm paid to act! Please don't go by Prakash's calm image, yeh bada gussail hai! I have seen him in action at Hemalkasa!
You have fought shy of promoting a film. But don't you think Marathi films, with their superb content, need rigorous promotion in this cutthroat world?
I have always felt that promoting somebody else's mistake as a superlative product is not my cup of tea. And the end of the day, you will only tag me as a liar! Honestly, along with promotions, Marathi film industry needs audience too. We are ready to do so many innovations and experiments in our films, but they have to be seen!
You have always maintained that youngsters should enter politics for selfless service. But, will we also see you entering the political fray someday?
Mentally, I'm still 26 though my real age is 62. And in school, my teacher would make me sit right next to him because he found it difficult to hit me again and again, if I was sitting far away. Maine saare paath murga bann kar ulte padhe hein, isliye main thoda ulta hoon. So, politics is not my scene!
You have sung a couple of songs in your films. Any encore happening?
I have sung some free verses, yet the fact remains that I have a fine ear for music, but I'm not blessed with great voice!
How's your career as organic farmer proceeding?
I'm loving it! The food on my plate mostly comes from my own farm and I have put on little weight too. I have a fine brown tan now, so I can easily be wrapped and sold as a chocolate! (Laughs).
As an avid cricket lover, what's your take on Sachin Tendulkar's retirement and Dhoni's replacement as a captain?
I just fail to understand this concept that Sachin will decide when to retire! What if the government employees also say this? Having said that, I want to add that people have revered Sachin as a god and they don't want him to get hurt. If selection committee asks him to quit, that will be so embarrassing, and sports lovers would never want that to happen! As far as Dhoni goes, I guess, players have bad patches!
