Bollywood makes gays appear feminine, idiotic and abnormal: Rohit Bal

Rohit Bal's ambitious plan includes a book and a film that will deal with the real concerns of the gay community and not the usual caricature

Fashion's most flamboyant, the gay community's most iconic - Rohit Bal has dominated collective consciousness for years. And now the fashion designer with the famous curls and even more famous candour, has trained his sights on Bollywood. Not on any ordinary styling assignment, but on a self-styled mission to purge the industry of what he says are depressing caricatures of his kind. And he is preparing to tackle the beast with a book and a film.

In a conversation with TOI, the 51-year-old fashion designer said, "Bollywood makes gays appear feminine, idiotic and abnormal. I strongly resent it. We need to portray the true lives of gays in India."

Gudda, as he is fondly called, is writing two books. "One is a pictorial, which is more about my craft than about fashion. The other, is about the world of fashion seen through my eyes," he says, adding that both should be ready in a few months. It is the latter, which is the preamble to his film. "Both the book and the film, when it is made, will be based on my perceptions about gays and not anything else and an intense love story."

Gudda rues the fact that there are many in the fashion fraternity who are yet to come out in the open. "This is really so unfortunate. There are people who still haven't come out in the open. The moment we feel closeted, the world gets closeted for us," he says.

Never the one to shy away from his sexual orientation, Gudda's many boyfriends have enjoyed their place in the sun as much as he did. But he admits, that the biggest challenge here is winning parental approval. "But for me it was never a problem because I came from a liberal family. But I see people living double lives all around me. I see parents ostracising their kids because they are gay. They force gay men to get married and their children to lead double lives. It is really sad."

While everyone from Shah Rukh Khan to Abhishek Bachchan has played characters that get into a bit of gay role playing purely for 'comic relief' Gudda insists, his film will be shorn of stars. "No star has the real courage to play a gay character. If they do, no one will accept them," he says.

Troubled by the way the community continues to be portrayed in the entertainment industry, Gudda says that using the medium of cinema to explore the real concerns of gays and lesbians is better than participating in candle-light marches. "The gay march is a once-in-a-year activity and it's more like a celebration. Only a genuine film will help me reach millions of people," he says.
