Bipasha Basu might have become the second Indian to feature in a recent list of top 100 women in the world by a leading magazine, is a brand name by herself and seems to get bigger with every film, but she confesses that she "doesn't know" what she's done to be in that "list, but it feels great to be in it anyway. I'm really bad at taking compliments, but whenever I get them, I tell myself, 'way to go girl' and move on."
Bipasha, who was in Ahmedabad recently to promote Aatma, says that genres "don't matter" to her and she doesn't think she has done a lot of horror films, contrary to popular misconception.
She says, "I've done 100 odd films in my career, out of that just four are horror films. So that's really not a huge number. Besides, I don't sign a film depending on its genre. I used to do that during my initial days, but I have done too many films to bother about things like genre now. I do a film if it interests me, has a connect with the audience and some entertainment value. The rest doesn't matter."
Even with a lot being written about her personal life in the last one year, Bipasha has excelled professionally. Ask her how she manages to keep personal life separate from her professional and she's quick to reply, "It's been more than two and a half years since my break up, and I have moved on long back. Besides, I am what I am because of all that I have faced in my personal life. In fact my professional life is inspired by what happens in my personal sphere. I have matured a lot as an actress now. At 17 (the age when I debuted in Bollywood), I'm sure I wouldn't have been able to do the kind of roles I am capable of doing now."
Describing what brand Bipasha means to her, she says, "I've always been an unconventional actress. In my first Bollywood film I played a grey character. Then I took up horror films (Raaz), and they worked for me. I am the only actress amongst my contemporaries to have a jubilee hit (in Raaz). It went on to run in the threater for almost 50 weeks, while today's films are only about the first three days, and they are done by the time first week is over." She signs off on that jubilant note.
