Story: A team of the best cops in Mumbai is dispatched to find a girl who has gone missing from her father's car. As the hunt for the kidnapper begins, fingers suspiciously point to closer home.

A despondent Shalini (Tejaswini Kolhapure) leans too hard on her whiskey bottle. Your heart races as she fingers a gun placed in her dresser drawer and just when you think she'll pull the trigger, she puts it back.
So what has driven Shalini to the edge? Well, she was once an attractive collegian being wooed by two friends - Rahul (Rahul Bhat) and Shaumik Bose (Ronit Roy). She chooses the flamboyant Rahul, an aspiring actor. One daughter Kali (Anshika Shrivastava) later, love flies out of the window. Rahul fails to find work, Shalini fails to find love.
This lands her in the arms of Bose, now a super-cop. However, he crucifies her because he hasn't forgotten that she had slighted him for Rahul. Amidst all this, 10-year-old Kali goes missing.
In yet another case of his cinema noir, Kashyap not only has you glued to your seat unravelling the whodunit, he subtly draws you into a vortex of emotions. It's the dark recesses of his characters that has you riveted. Check this out - the failed actor is a frustrated man, but a loving father. The tough-as-nails cop is a lousy husband, but a principled policeman. The alcoholic mother is concerned about her child, but more concerned about herself.
There are also slime-ball characters like Shalini's brother Siddhanth (Siddhanth Kapoor) and an item girl Raakhee (Surveen Chawla) who act as catalysts. Frustrated police inspector Vijay Jadhav (Girish Kulkarni) and casting agent Chaitanya (Vineet Kumar Singh) are dealing with their own voyeurism. Human nature is captured with all its failings, frustrations and frailties. Even while the hunt for the girl goes awry, other skeletons tumble out, adding a macabre twist.
While the pace does dip in the second half, what makes Ugly tick is the searing honesty with which it is told. It's not for the faint-hearted, but for those who are willing to let the morally decrepit live.

For the second time this year, the darkness of human spirit is evaluated through the foul mist surrounding the disappearance of a little girl. There's probably a realistic middle ground somewhere between Mardaani's Delhi-based child-trafficking underbelly and Anurag Kashyap's nauseating deconstruction of Mumbai's desperate survival instinct. However, Ugly visibly strives for a more uncomfortable rendition of real events.
Ugly isn't so much about the fate of a missing 10-year old as it is about the sheer fruitlessness of human ego. Her kidnapping is incidental; it serves as a trigger to accelerate the breakdown of a family tethering on the edge.
Absurdly, a personal revenge drama—involving the girl's divorced parents (Bhat, Kolhapure) and stepfather (Roy)—ensues within the confines of a choppy thriller. There are lengthy periods where the primary goal—that of tracing the girl—is overlooked in favour of cat-and-mouse games between a strange assortment of characters.
The tone is set during a classic FIR-filing sequence: Rahul Kapoor (Bhat), a struggling actor, spends 15 ridiculous minutes trying to explain to local inspector Jadhav (Kulkarni) how his daughter went missing from his car. With him is his casting director buddy, a hustler named Chaitanya (Vineet Singh; solid), whose motivations become increasingly difficult to understand with time. This exchange morphs into a random discussion about why actors use fake names, camera phone mechanisms, cyber cafes and, most importantly, the importance of a casting director. Jadhav sobers up only when he discovers that the girl's stepfather is Police Chief Bose (Roy).
Such elements initially point towards the making of a dark comic caper, a direction Kashyap fortunately steers clear from. Bose is the key here; even as Rahul seems torn between paths he can't fully ascertain. Ronit Roy is Bollywood's go-to man for monster-dad roles (Udaan, Two States), but honestly, his mere presence is scarier than entire horror franchises. At one point, he makes Jadhav recite the lyrics of an item song to profile a sultry suspect (Chawla). His blank face is the sole reason you find yourself chuckling nervously instead of laughing loudly, the kind heard when a murderous teacher stares at a mischievous student. He is vengeful, petty and taps everyone's phones constantly, one of many traits behind his wife's suicidal existence.
This phone-tapping habit, which leads to ransom sub-plots and a pointless jewelry heist, is used as an omnipresent device to drive the story forward. This complicates matters to a point where every character's behavior seems contrived, like part of a frantic plan heading nowhere. The narrative—ripe with definitive flashbacks—is not easy to follow, and only makes sense in hindsight.
If not for Girish Kukarni's spellbinding turn as Jadhav, and Bhat's brave attempt to internalize failure, Ugly may have ended up as a stubborn signature, possibly Anurag Kashyap's Kahaani.
This isn't an easy film to watch, and not each of its 127 minutes is entirely purposeful. Everyone is an antagonist; there's not a moment when they are not driven by oppression and greed.
Look closely enough, and the mystery is offered on a platter early on, when we're still figuring out who is who. This isn't exactly a whodunit, but more of a tragic whydunit—a cracked mirror held up to reflect the trappings of our fractured society.
I disliked what I saw, and I dislike thinking or even writing about its familiar environment. And this vile aftertaste is perhaps Mr. Kashyap's most significant achievement.

अनुराग कश्यप एक खास और अलग क्लास के लिए फिल्में बनाने वाले मेकर्स में से हैं। बेशक पिछले एक-दो सालों में अनुराग पर भी दनादन फिल्में बनाने का जुनून सवार हुआ और बतौर निर्माता उनका नाम लव-शव ते चिकन खुराना जैसी कई फिल्मों के साथ भी जुड़ा। शायद यही वजह रही इस बार अनुराग लंबे अर्से बाद अपनी नई फिल्म के साथ नजर आए।
बतौर निर्देशक अनुराग को शायद पहले से यह आभास था कि उनकी यह डॉर्क टाइप की आम मुंबइया सिनेमा से कोसो दूर बनी यह फिल्म मसाला फिल्मों के शौकीनों के साथ फैमिली क्लास के लिए नहीं है, इसीलिए तो इन दिनों जब बॉक्स आफिस पर पीके का नाम डंका बज रहा है, अनुराग ने ऐसे में अपनी इस फिल्म को चुनिंदा थिएटरों पर रिलीज किया है।
वैसे अनुराग की यह फिल्म पिछले साल कांस फिल्म फेस्टिवल में खूब सराही गई और इसी साल न्यू यॉर्क इंडियन फिल्म फेस्टिवल में भी फिल्म को खूब तारीफ मिली। पिछले दिनों एक इवेंट में निर्देशक अनुराग कश्यप से मेरी मुलाकात हुई तो उनकी इस फिल्म के बारे में पूछा तो उन्होंने बस इतना ही कहा विदेश में तो खूब तारीफें मिली लेकिन मुझे इंतजार है कि अपने देश के दर्शकों की प्रतिक्रिया का जानने का। बेशक अनुराग ने माना अग्ली एक इमोशनल और डार्क टाइप की फ़िल्म है।
कहानी: मुंबई पुलिस में एसीपी शौमिक बोस (रोनित रॉय) ने शालिनी (तेजस्विनी कोल्हापुरे) से शादी की है। वैसे शौमिक को शालिनी पर शुरू से अपनी बीवी पर शक है, यही वजह है कि शालिनी का मोबाइल उसने सर्विलांस पर लगा रखा है। कुछ साल पहले शालिनी ने घर वालों की मर्जी के खिलाफ स्ट्रगलिंग ऐक्टर राहुल कपूर (राहुल भट्ट) से लव मैरिज की थी। राहुल लंबे अर्से से बॉलिवुड में अपनी पहचान बनाने के लिए स्ट्रगल कर रहा है, लेकिन कामयाबी नहीं मिल रही है। शालिनी और राहुल की करीब दस साल की बेटी कली (अंशिका श्रीवास्तव) है। लंबे अर्से से स्ट्रगल करते करते राहुल अपसेट रहने लगा, यही वजह थी कि शालिनी और राहुल के बीच रोज छोटी-छोटी बात पर झगड़ा होता रहता था। राहुल ने जब शालिनी पर हाथ उठाना भी शुरू कर दिया तो दोनों के बीच तलाक हो गया।
शालिनी अब एसीपी शौमिक के साथ रहती है और शौमिक कली का अब सौतेला पिता बन चुका है। कोर्ट ने राहुल को अपनी बेटी कली से हर शनिवार मिलने की छूट दी हुई है। इस शनिवार राहुल जब अपनी बेटी कली को लेकर अपने दोस्त कास्टिंग डायरेक्टर के घर आता है, इसी बीच नीचे कार में बैठी कली का अपहरण हो जाता है। दूसरी ओर शौमिक को शक है राहुल ने ही अपनी बेटी का अपहरण किया है। दिन भर शराब के नशे में धुत रहने वाली शालिनी को भी यही लगता है कि राहुल ने ही अपनी बेटी का अपहरण किया है।
ऐक्टिंग: एसीपी शौनित बोस के किरदार में रोनित रॉय ने बेहतरीन काम किया है। गुस्सैल एसीपी के रोल में रोनित ने हर सीन में अपनी छाप छोड़ी है। स्ट्रगलर ऐक्टर के रोल में राहुल भट्ट खूब जमे हैं। अपनी अलग दुनिया में हर वक्त शराब के नशे में जी रही शालिनी के किरदार में तेजस्विनी कोल्हापुरे परफेक्ट हैं। शालिनी की बेस्ट फ्रेंड बनी आइटम डांसर राखी के रोल में सुरवीन चावला ओर इंस्पेक्टर जाधव के रोल में गिरीश कुलकर्णी बस ठीकठाक रहे।
डायरेक्शन : अग्ली पूरी तरह से अनुराग की फिल्म है। गैंग्स ऑफ वासेपुर के लंबे अर्से बाद अनुराग ने अपनी स्टाइल की ऐसी फिल्म बनाई है जिसकी उम्मीद उनके फैंस करते है। फिल्म की रफ्तार दर्शकों को कहानी और किरदारों के साथ बांधकर रखती है। स्क्रिप्ट की डिमांड के मुताबिक अनुराग ने कई बोल्ड सीन्स के साथ ऐसे हिंसात्मक सीन्स को भी फिल्म का हिस्सा बनाया, जिनसे बचा जा सकता था।
क्यों देखें: अगर कुछ नया और अलग देखने के शौकीन है तो फिल्म देखी जा सकती है। अनुराग कश्यप स्टाइल की फिल्मों के शौकीन है तो अपसेट नहीं होंगे वहीं साफ सुथरी, मसाला, कॉमिडी फिल्मों के शौकीन है तो टोटली अपसेट होंगे।
