Movie Review: 'Dallas Buyers Club'

Story: The film is the real-life story of Rodeo cowboy Ron Woodroof, a homophobic electrician, who was diagnosed with HIV in 1985 and given just 30 days to live. Unable to come to terms with his condition, he decided to fight not just the disease, but also the complacent American health-care system.

Review: A film on an AIDS-stricken protagonist (who, in order to prolong his life, becomes an accidental entrepreneur-crusader-activist) could easily emerge as a melancholic piece of socio-medical drama. Instead, Jean-Marc Vallee uplifts and inspires by just showcasing Ron's (an emaciated Matthew McConaughey) relentless resilience without glorifying his bigoted views or outrageous (drugs-prostitutes-beer) lifestyle. He is the unlikely hero who knows he is fighting a lost battle. He lives in a trailer park and hates 'faggots', who according to him are the only ones to contract AIDS.

After his friends shun him owing to the 'disease' and the doctors give him 30 days to put his affairs in order, instead of succumbing to depression, he becomes his own physician. He discovers and smuggles unapproved but effective drugs into the US from Mexico and other countries for himself and to make money. But somewhere down the line, he also ends up reaching out to those abandoned by society like Rayon (Jared Leto), a transgender woman addicted to cocaine and infected by HIV. Their deep bromance forms an integral part of the story and is far more interesting than the insipid love track between Ron and Dr Eve (Jennifer Garner).

What seems like a standard plot is elevated to excellence by the lead actors' remarkable performances. There's more to McConaughey than the drastic weight loss and an author-backed, Oscar-friendly role. From getting the Texan mannerisms, swagger and his character's juvenility right, to producing a range of emotions, he reinvents himself and gives the performance of his career. It would be a shame if he doesn't bag the much-coveted Oscar for it. Leto is a revelation too and deserves the accolades coming his way.

Ron died in 1992, seven years after he was diagnosed with HIV. This is his incredible life story, told with a dash of humour and an empathy-evoking narrative. Brilliant would be an understatement.

Movie Review: 'Non-Stop'

Story: A mysterious hijacker takes control of a passenger aircraft on a trans-Atlantic flight, demanding $150 million in ransom money to be transferred into an offshore account.

Review: Bill Marks (Neeson) is a grizzled veteran with a face lined with years of (being a cop followed by a Federal agent) experience and good Scotch. A reformed soak, he however is someone who would go to any lengths to do his duty with not a shred of self-doubt. The pretty Jen Summers (Moore), who sits next to him during the flight, enigmatically discloses very little of what she does, apart from saying that she "flies a lot".

But just when everyone settles down comfortably for the journey, Marks starts receiving ominous messages on his phone via the plane's Wi-Fi, which conveys to him that a person will die every 20 minutes unless he arranges for the money transfer.

Every trick in the plane-hijack-movie handbook is thrown into this by-the-numbers film, along with some interesting twists and turns. There are several standout scenes - the hand-to-hand combat sequence in one of the toilets in the plane, shot from multiple angles, is particularly harrowing. And the contrasts in the film - shots of passengers calmly sleeping, often alternating between frantic behind-the-scenes scurrying, are also interesting.

The narrative successfully keeps you guessing about who the perpetrator really is. Could it be a certain bald passenger in Economy Class (Corey Stroll, from House of Cards) who keeps thumbing his phone suspiciously? The airhostess Nancy (Dockery)? Or the passenger with the bushy beard and shifty eyes? Or - to Marks' great doubt - Summers herself? At one point we even begin to wonder if Marks himself is unhinged. 12 Years A Slave's Lupita Nyong'o is restricted to a sideshow but this is Neeson's vehicle - or shall we say plane ride - all the way.

If there's a film that is pretty much true to its name, then this one is it. Another variation on the classic theme of a plane hijack, the movie is relentless with not a wasted second.

Ranveer-Deepika in Aditya Chopra’s next?

Buzz is that Shah Rukh Khan may not be the leading man of Aditya Chopra's next directorial venture. According to film trade sources, Ranveer Singh has bagged the lead role in the Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008) director's next venture. And riding high on the four big hits of 2013, Deepika Padukone will be the leading lady. Incidentally, this will be Ranveer-Deepika's second film after their sizzling chemistry in Ram-Leela made it a runaway hit.

Aditya, who made his debut as a director with Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), has made only three films so far. After his debut became a huge hit and was the first to strike gold in the overseas, the director's second film Mohabbatein came only after five years. And it was after another seven years that he made Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. While all his three films have starred Shah Rukh Khan, it's the first time he's reportedly making a movie with another actor.
Trade sources say it's not surprising since Ranveer is his most successful protege, with back-to-back successes like Ram-Leela and Gunday, the latter also produced by Aditya's home banner, Yash Raj Films. And with this film, Deepika returns to the Chopra camp, after four years since Lafangey Parindey (2010). Her first with the Chopras was Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008).

Says a trade source, "With Ranveer and Deepika, it seems Aditya is planning something really youthful and novel. So it will be interesting to wait and watch out for what he has in store with his new film, also a first minus Shah Rukh Khan."

One of those offended by the imagery has launched a petition on Change.org, which reads: "This petition is lodged In (sic) regards to Katy Perry's music video 'Dark Horse'... The video is considered as highly controversial to its viewers as a result of its portrayal of blasphemy.

Such goes to show, that blasphemy is clearly conveyed in the video, since Katy Perry (who appears to be representing an opposition of god) engulfs the believer and the word God in flames.

"I have learnt the power of forgiveness through Satyamev Jayate because last season I have met many less fortunate people on the show who have suffered a lot in their life and yet they have moved on without holding any grudges. One change in me which I noticed is that I have started forgiving people since then," says Aamir
