Didn’t take a dig at Salman’s Ek Tha Tiger: John

John Abraham is all thrilled about his upcoming film Madras Cafe. In a haste of excitement at an event, the actor claimed that his film is real and portrays a real agent in the film.

Later, there were speculations that the actor took a dig at Salman Khan's Ek Tha Tiger where he essayed the role of a larger than life agent. However, the actor clears the rumors and puts an end to the speculations. "The only person I spoke before doing the film was myself as I have done all that in the past. When I said that it's a realistic film, I meant the story and I don't play a hero, but a character in Madras Cafe," said John.

"I have complete respect for Salman and the film that he has done. I have complete respect for the films I have done. They all have garnered commercial success. My only point was that Madras Cafe is a different flick," added the actor.

He also explained his comment by citing the example of films he has done in the past. "I am doing a film with Nishikant Kamat and I am doing Welcome Back too. I am doing all those kind of films. I am doing Sanjay Gupta's next which is more heroic than Shootout At Wadala. At the end of the day it's important to tell a good story and I know I will find youth to watch the film," concluded John.

Big B meets kids who climbed Mount Everest

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 30 Juli 2013 | 21.44

Students of The Lawrence School, Sanawar, which is the alma mater of Sanjay Dutt, Apoorva Lakhia and Bunty Walia amongst others in Bollywood, achieved a tremendous feat when they became the youngest bunch to climb Mount Everest. Seven students of this school, that is based near Chandigarh and has the distinction of being one of Asia's oldest educational institutions, were the ones who managed this tough feat. And even they didn't foresee that their reward would be a felicitation at the hands of India's biggest cinema icon — Amitabh Bachchan.

On Sunday evening, the day when Big B grants an audience to hordes of fans, this bunch of students were given the additional honour of a personal audience with him. Not only did Bachchan meet each of the kids really warmly, he also gifted them personalisedautographed copies of his book To Be Or Not To Be.

The students Fateh Singh Brar, Prithvi Singh Chahel, Ajay Sohal, Haqiqat Singh Garewal, Shubham Kaushik, Raghav Juneja and Gori Badet Singh were heard telling the actor that they took 60 days from Delhi and back for their expedition and the experiences they had.

Their base camp was Kumbu in Nepal and they spent eight months training for their adventure sport. In fact, the last phase of the climb took a non-stop 26 hours!

Director Apoorva Lakhia and producer Bunty Walia, both of whom are ex-students of The Lawrence School and both of whom are very close to Sanjay Dutt and Abhishek Bachchan, were the ones who managed to get the young achievers an audience with Mr B.

Directors bring their hometown to the silver screen

The diversity of India is finally making its way to the silver screen, thanks to directors who have come armed with new stories from their hometowns to Bollywood. Be it Kolkata, Delhi, Almora, Meerut, Darjeeling, Banaras, Lucknow, Dalhousie or Chittagong, they are all finding their way into Bollywood.

In comparison, films in the 70s and 80s were frequently based in Bombay since the directors had grown up in the metropolis and their worldview reflected in their films. Even if they were outsiders who'd come looking for work, they preferred to tell stories based in the metro. Chetan Anand's Taxi Driver, Raj Khosla's C.I.D, Manmohan Desai's Amar Akbar Anthony, Yash Chopra's Deewar, Mahesh Bhatt's Yeh Hai Mumbai Meri Jaan and Kundan Shah's Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro are all films based in Mumbai.

Beyonce is my current role model: Sunidhi Chauhan

Sunidhi Chauhan, 29, is still a simple girl with few needs. She started performing at the age of five, dropped out of school post Xth, married first at 18, got divorced at 19 and has re-married at 28. While she met her husband Hitesh Sonik 12 years back, she wonders why it took her so long to marry him. She is deeply emotional and takes life as it comes. For her, singing is oxygen and even singing sad songs makes her happy.

Her favourite song is Le Chale from My Brother Nikhil. She continues to churn out chartbusters be it Yaaram from Ek Thi Daayan, Dilliwali Girlfriend from Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani or Kashmir Main Tu Kanyakumari from Chennai Express. She talks to TOI about the sacrifice of her father, her role model Beyonce and why she is madly in love with Hitesh. Excerpts:

How did you become a singer?
I am born and brought up in Delhi. My dad was doing theatre and played Ram in the famous DCM Ram Leela for about 12 years. People would actually come and touch his feet and would treat him like Ram only. I still have a cutting of the TOI when he was on the front page. He also sang in the Ram Leela and had a bold voice. So whatever power I have in my voice, I get from him. I am not a trained singer and don't remember when my hobby of singing turned into a profession. I did a lot of shows from the age of five. It was my dad's friends who pushed me to take up singing seriously.

Dad started paying more attention and he started feeling that there was more to it. He quit everything for me at the peak of his career and brought me to Mumbai, at the age of 11. He not only sacrificed his career, but gave his heart and soul to me. It was a completely blind decision for him. Financially, it was not easy for us. We could manage in Delhi, but Mumbai was expensive, so it was more difficult. Tabassumji had heard me in Delhi and introduced me to Kalyanji bhai. I stayed in his academy for over two years. He wanted to groom me to become a better singer, but I would not get the time as I got busy with his show Little Wonders, with 32 kids, in which I was the lead singer. Papa says he paid me extremely well and took care of us like a father would. Too many shows started happening, but my father wanted me to sing for films.

Aadesh Shrivastavaji heard me singing at the 40th Filmfare Awards. Kalyanji Anandji had kept a section called Little Wonders in which Aditya Narayan and I had performed as individual singers. Aadeshji gave me my first break at 11; that was a duet with Udit Narayanji. For the next two years, I did nothing much and sang oohs and aahs for background scores and some songs for Aadeshji. My voice was also changing at this time. I did not have my own songs, but did a lot of shows with Madhuri Dixit, Sridevi and Kumar Sanu during that time and must have travelled to America at least 12 times.

I quit studies after tenth as I was doing so many shows. I am reserved but was never afraid of performing on stage as dad always gave me the confidence that I had it in me. I used to be really shy till 15. But I remember in one of the shows of Aadeshji I was singing Latka Dikha Diya Humne and something happened to me. My shyness just disappeared on stage from that day. I can never stand in one place on stage for more than a minute and am always singing, dancing and jumping.

Let's talk about your mother?
My mom is my heart. She was a rock for me even though she was not around as much as dad. My dad was always touring with me and stayed away from her due to that. Even though I am married now, they stay two minutes away from me and my dad still tours with me.

Your first marriage at 18 to Bobby Khan lasted 16 months. Do you regret having moved away from your parents during that time?
I didn't move away, but the situation made us go away. And no, it doesn't pain. I have no memory or feeling about that time and it is as good as not being there in my life. People go through a lot more and I don't consider it anything. I am glad whatever happened made me grow in life.

How did you meet your husband Hitesh Sonik?
We have been married for just over a year now. We met during recordings 12 years back. He was the music arranger for Vishal Bhardwajji's music, right from Maachis to Saat Khoon Maaf has been done by him. He also did the background score for films like Ishqiya, Mausam and now Kai Po Che amongst many others. We started seeing each other all of a sudden only two-and-a-half years ago. We were good friends and I guess it just happened. I knew him for so long, but I wonder why we decided to marry so late. We loved each other, but it's always the male I guess who says it first. Deep down in my heart even when I said I am really not there, I am sure I must have been there and that's why we must have met for coffee and conversations. As I knew him more, he just drew me towards him. He has endless qualities and I just love him.

Do you have a role model?
My current role model is Beyonce. She is such a strong woman. She can do everything. She has kept herself together and has balanced her life perfectly. She is a great singer, great dancer and a great looker and is now a good mother and wife. I like the fact that whatever she dreams of or decides to do, she does. In India, I look up to Lataji. She is not a singer for me but a temple of music. There is something beyond singing that only she has.

Do awards matter to you?
They are a great boost to your self, but they are not everything. I can't say they don't matter, but it does not hurt when I don't get it. Honestly, I get crazily happy when I am nominated. The award for me is when I see 50,000 people singing along with me in my shows.

Katrina fine with leaked holiday photos

Katrina Kaif is apparently fine that her holiday pictures with Ranbir Kapoor have surfaced.

According to an online publication, the Bollywood actress was heard telling a pal that the pictures have hit two birds with one stone.

The first reason being that Salman Khan is no longer in her life and she is now in love with Kapoor.

The second reason is that the rumours of the Kapoor getting close with his former girlfriend Deepika Padukone, during the success party of their flick 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' are nothing but false.

Though the 30-year-old brunette beauty is unhappy about with the way the pictures were clicked, as the couple was not aware that they were being photographed.

Milkha puts spotlight back on Bollywood sports films

Written By Unknown on Senin, 29 Juli 2013 | 21.44

Just as Farhan Akhtar sprinted ahead of his rival on the race track in the climax of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, this film, based on Indian athlete Milkha Singh's life, has been racing ahead of competition at the Box Office, grossing more than 70 crore and counting. Its success has brought the spotlight back on sports films — a genre that still remains elusive to filmmakers in Bollywood.

Unlike in the West, where sports films have been made since the era of silent films (Charlie Chaplin's boxing-comedy The Champion in 1915), Bollywood has not been able to cash in on this genre. One of the reasons could be that when filmmakers attempted such subjects, they could not set the ball rolling at the BO.

For instance, the success of Lagaan led to a spate of films with cricket as the backdrop — Stumped, Iqbal, Say Salaam India, Hattrick, Victory, Jannat, Patiala House among others. But, only a handful like Iqbal, Jannat and more recently, Ferrari Ki Sawaari could make the cut.

The success of Chak De India made filmmakers realise that there is more to sports movies than cricket, leading to films being made on football (Dhana Dhan Goal) and carrom (Striker). However, these too failed to impress the audience.

Says Sanjay Chouhan, co-writer, Paan Singh Tomar, a biopic about an athlete-turned-dacoit, "Sports films require a lot of research, expertise and time. So, if one sports film bombs, directors become unwilling to put in the required effort. As a result, this is still an unexplored genre in Hindi cinema."

Of late, biopics have become a preferred route for those wishing to make sports films as they believe this adds human drama to the plot. In essence, BMB was a story of grit, guts and glory. On cards is a biopic on Olympic medalist Mary Kom and reports suggest that the lives of cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin and hockey legend Dhyan Chand will also be replicated on screen soon.

"A sports film only works when it has a strong human element in its plot that makes you root for the character. Otherwise, if you want to know about sports, watch a sports channel," reasons sports commentator Charu Sharma.

Bollywood sports films
Hip Hip Hurray (1983)

One of the earliest sports films in Bollywood, Prakash Jha's directorial debut revolved around the life of a football coach of a Ranchi school, essayed by Raj Kiran.

Boxer (1984)
Starring Mithun Chakraborty, this action film was inspired by Sylvester Stallone's Rocky series.

Lagaan (2001)
A blend of cricket and period drama, this Oscar-nominated film became the most successful release of 2001. It's lead actor, Aamir, had previously worked in two films with a sports backdrop — Awwal Number and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar.

Iqbal (2005)
Made on a shoe-string budget, this film had Shreyas Talpade essay the role of a deaf-and-mute village boy fulfilling his dream to be a part of the Indian cricket team.

Chak De (2007)
Giving a new lease of life to sports films beyond cricket, Shah Rukh Khan played an ostracised hockey captain who takes up the role of coaching the Indian women's hockey team.

Dhana Dhan Goal (2007)
The story of a Southall football team with South Asian players, this John Abraham starrer did a below average performance at the box office.

Paan Singh Tomar (2012)
This biopic on a steeple chase runner who turns into a dacoit won Irrfan his first National Award.

Some popular international films based on various sports
The Longest Yard (1974), Rocky (1976), Raging Bull (1980), Chariots Of Fire (1981), Remember The Titans (2000), Friday Night Lights (2004), Lords Of Dogtown (2005), Invictus (2009), The Blind Side (2009), The Fighter (2010), Senna (2010), Moneyball (2011)

I'm single, not ready to mingle: Nargis Fakhri

Actress Nargis Fakhri, who has been linked to actor-filmmaker Uday Chopra, says she is not seeing anyone.

"I am single and not ready to mingle. I am only here to work. I have a goal and I want to concentrate on that. Your career keeps you so busy, there is no time," added Nargis, who was seen in 2011 musical-romantic hit "Rockstar" as Ranbir Kapoor's on-screen love interest.

Uday expressed his love for Nargis on microblogging site Twitter and his tweets set the tongues wagging.

The one-film old actress admits being bothered by link-up news in the beginning, but has learned the tricks to handle them.

"In the beginning it was difficult because you feel bad, you don't understand what's going on. You get messages where people are congratulating you, and you feel, 'For what?',"she said.

"So, you are very confused in the beginning, but slowly you try to understand as it continues to happen. You don't understand where it is coming from, but you understand this is how it is."

I won't say I don't want a Rs 100 crore film: Deepika

Deepika Padukone is on a roll with a clutch of successful films behind her and others like 'Chennai Express' just a fortnight away from hitting the screens. TOI gets into a brief conversation with the actress ahead of her Eid release. Excerpts...

How did the conversation go with Shah Rukh Khan and RohitShetty when you agreed to do Chennai Express?
There was no conversation whatsoever. I was offered the film, and said, 'Sure, I would love to be a part of it'. When Rohit and his team narrated the script to me, I was in splits.

Rohit's films aren't really known for their leading ladies doing anything substantial. Weren't you worried?
Rohit's other films have largely been ensemble affairs but in the case of Chennai Express, the girl's part is quite strong and integral to the movie. In fact, I feel silly to even justify why I am doing the film.

In Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge,it was Shah Rukh who wooed Kajol during their first train journey but in Chennai Express, we hear the reverse is happening with you taking him for a ride.
To begin with, it's a classic DDLJ moment for Shah Rukh and I in the film (smiles). After having watched the movie as a 10-year old, there I was, reliving the moment with my very own Rahul...

With Shah Rukh and you in the lead and Rohit at the helm of affairs, it is expected this Eid will bring in more than Rs 100 crore for Chennai Express. Have you set any targets for yourself?
I won't say I don't want a Rs 100 crore film. Good numbers make everyone happy. As for the final collections, it is for Rohit, Shah Rukh and UTV to be worried about (smiles).

For someone who had back-to back flops a couple of years ago to be now considered a contender in the Rs 100 crore race, it's some journey, isn't it?
Yes, you do celebrate it for a while but then move on. Of course, I have worked hard to get where I am. It hasn't happened by chance.

I am averse to vulgar comedies: Arshad Warsi

In his next, Rabba Main Kya Karoon, Arshad Warsi will be seen encouraging his younger cousin to cheat on his wife. The film, which marks the debut of Akash Chopra and Tahira Kochhar, also stars Paresh Rawal, Raj Babbar, Shakti Kapoor, Tinnu Anand and Riya Sen.

Says Arshad about the film, "I'd call it a 'Big Fat Greek Wedding' set against the upmarket Delhi culture. Most married men will relate to the plot of cheating. They will be like, 'Yes, that happened to me' and 'Hmmm... even I got caught like this'.

Produced by Moti Sagar Associates, the film has been directed by Amrit Sagar Chopra.

So, will he share some tips on how to have an extra-marital relationship without getting caught? Pat comes the reply, "Don't get your girlfriend home even if your wife is on a vacation. It's big trouble. Also, one must master the art of lying. Even a slight hesitation in answering can lead to suspicion. You must lie blatantly and with a straight face."

Compared to his earlier comic roles, Arshad says that the humour here is situational and not slapstick. "It's a clean and mature comedy. The makers have put across the madness of a Punjabi wedding accurately. It made me experience how Punjabis want everything to be larger than life, even the baraat ke laddoos. We shot in lovely cold weather and were well-attired. The marriage mood has stayed with me."

When asked if he'd be open to doing a sex comedy, the actor says, "There's a thin line between sexuality and vulgarity and our writers tilt towards the latter. I am averse to vulgar comedies. Also, the comedy in films like Golmaal and Dhamaal, to name a few, tires me. It's so over-the-top and all that yelling and fighting is physically exerting."

Rabba Main Kya Karoon, presented by Trueman Entertainment and Sita Films Pvt Ltd, releases August 2.

Shah Rukh to pull up a Clooney act

Shah Rukh Khan's character in 'Happy New Year' will have several traits in common with George Clooney's 'Danny Ocean' in the 2001 film, 'Ocean's 11'. And this tempts us into looking for more similarities between the other characters in the Farah Khan film and the Steven Soderbergh hit.

However, while Ocean's 11 is about a heist, Farah's film is reportedly about a group of inept dancers locked in a competition. A friend of

SRK elaborated on his role in HNY, "He will be very cool with the girls, yet emphatically want to remain single. He will lead the pack, which will comprise of AbhishekBachchan, Vivaan Shah and BomanIrani. The other guys will follow him, look up to him for directions. Yes, much like Clooney in the Ocean trilogy."

TOI has also learnt that Shah Rukh will sport a mature look. "He will play his age," the friend added. TOI had earlier reported, SRK will wear his hair longer than usual for the role. While other details about SRK's look are being planned, what with the film just a month away from going on floors, Farah is yet to finalise her leading lady - a Marathi bar dancer.

In fact, a source close to Katrina Kaif confirmed that she is not doing the film, contrary to the news doing the rounds in certain sections of the media. Another source tells us that SRK has second thoughts about casting TV actress and Sushant Singh Rajput's girlfriend Ankita Lokhande in the role. Ankita's name has been propped up as a strong contender. "Ankita is very keen to be a part of Happy New Year, but it is not certain if she will get the role," added a source.

Anil Kapoor believes in the idea of having fun

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 28 Juli 2013 | 21.44

Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor believes in the idea of having fun, and not taking things in life too seriously.

Often, Anil is called a style icon, courtesy his fashionable sense of dressing, which is truly age-defying.

Asked if such tags make him conscious about the way he turns out in public, he said: "I think the idea is have fun - whether it is about acting, clothes or food... enjoy yourself and have fun! You can't always take these things seriously."

As the showstopper at a fashion event, Anil looked dapper in a black kurta teamed with a sleeveless black embroidered velvet jacket. And he was not a wee bit nervous.

"I feel the ramp was very well-designed... it was not formal... very casual, done up innovatively and simply," Anil said, praising the miniature fountains between the ramp.

My film is not just about sexual positions: Sherlyn

Saroj Khan is choreographing a dance sequence for Sherlyn Chopra's next, Kamasutra 3-D.

Says Sherlyn, "Sarojji is a dancer par excellence. For someone who has worked with leading ladies for so many years, she has zero ego. When you are around for so long in the industry, you tend to become arrogant, but she is just the opposite. The best thing about her is that she knows where to draw the line and will make sure my performance appeals to Indian sensibilities."

The dance director returns the sentiment. "Sherlyn is a good student. She is naturally blessed and has a flair for dance. She takes a lot of interest in her work and makes sure she practises her steps until she gets them right. I had fun working with her," she says.

Talking about the film, Sherlyn says, "When offered the film, the first thing I asked was if it would be soft porn. Director Rupesh Paul told me that this would be one of the most emotional, passionate love sagas of all time. That was it. I was sold." She continues, "I don't enjoy watching porn. It has no depth. My film is not just about sexual positions. It is largely about the art of living."

Sherlyn talks about turning over a new leaf, "There was a time when I was misunderstood and I blame myself completely. I don't want to be controversial and outrageous, but honest and bold."

Hugh Jackman reveals his fitness secrets

Highly dramatic and breathlessly exciting, The Wolverine takes Logan from America to Tokyo where he is drawn inextricably into a twisted labyrinth of deceit and treachery. The action is visceral from start to finish and the film's star, Hugh Jackman, is at the height of his acting powers, portraying the clawed mutant with humanity, but also inner conflict. Full of his legendary berserker rage, Jackman infuses the most popular mutant from the X-Men universe with power, depth and vulnerability. He exclusively talks to TOI about his sixth Wolverine flick, what it takes to play the world's toughest and most conflicted superhero, India and more.

Tell us about your last trip to India. You and your wife visited Jaipur, you shook a leg with Shah Rukh Khan and Vidya Balan at a film convention — how was that experience? Do you plan to visit the country again soon?
We were treated so incredibly well in India! I loved it. We saw a Bollywood movie being made, I learnt a nice little dance move from Shah Rukh Khan. We went to his house for a meal. It was more than anything we could ask for. Deb (Jackman's wife Deborra-Lee Furness) loved Jaipur. We had some great food, we took long walks. We have great memories of our trip and we constantly talk about going back.

The role of Wolverine, besides acting, requires you to undergo severe physical transformation. Considering you just dropped a lot of weight for your role in Les Miserables, how much did you have to alter your training and diet to reprise this role?
For one, I had to be on a strict diet of seven chicken breasts a day to get into shape for The Wolverine. I also had to work out three hours a day, two hours every morning at 5 am, and I had to squeeze in another hour on the set. There was a time my wife used to feel sorry for me when I had to wake up in the middle of the night to go train, but now she kicks me out of bed when I grumble. She says, "Go on, you know you love it". And I do. I embrace everything that comes with this part.

The X-Men series, Wolverine included, has quite a huge fan base in India. Does Hollywood see India as a huge potential market for its movies?
Sure. I think we'd want the film to reach out everywhere there are fans. And Indian fans have always been so generous with their affection for these characters. I know the movie came out in India on the same date as the US. We wanted the Indian fans to see the film at the same time as the rest of the world. I think with comic book movies particularly, you have to protect the fans and really indulge them and respect their loyalty.

Can you discuss the premise of the film and what audiences can look forward to?
This movie takes place a long time after X-Men Origins: Wolverine, many years into the future. Wolverine is on a journey in a foreign land, a new world with completely new characters where he is gradually forced to face who he is. This is definitely the most personal of all the stories about the Wolverine. It is as though his entire life, up to this point, has brought him nothing but misery, pain and destruction, and he has reached a point where he's done with it. But then, he is reluctantly drawn into the world of Japan. I can't explain exactly why that happens; it's got to do with something in his past.

What does this movie mean to you personally?
At the end of the day, when I'm old and in my wheelchair and someone asks 'Which movie should I watch about that great character, Wolverine?' I want to say, 'Watch The Wolverine.' I'm really excited about the film. We have a great group of actors and a fantastic crew; the planets are lining up in every way.

Your appearance is quite different in this movie. You look dapper in a suit. Is this a new look for Wolverine?
This is a whole new look for me. Let's start with the hair because the hair has been a three-act play in itself over the years (laughs). This time, there are two looks. I don't want to give away the first look, but in this look that you are seeing now with the 'wings', we just wanted to make it look and feel fresh. My hair is slightly shorter and it's not so coiffed as before because this is a more contemporary movie. The last film was set in the 70s. As far as the suit is concerned, all I'm going to tell you is that this is not Logan's own wardrobe. This is not his particular choice of clothes and I dare say this may be the very last time you ever see Wolverine in high-end suits. (laughs). But I think secretly he's quite enjoying it.

Having played Wolverine so many times, are you still as enthusiastic about the character?
Yes, I pinch myself everyday that I get the chance to play him. There is not a job I've done that I've felt, 'Oh, wish I wasn't doing this'. I'm really doing what I love to do in my life. Imagine a person who loves to play golf and someone taps him on the shoulder and says: 'Would you like to play professionally for the rest of your life?' I feel like that. It actually happened to me relatively late in life, aged 26. One of the first movie parts I ever got was this guy Wolverine in X-Men. I had no idea what it was about and more by luck than by design, I had actually come across one of the great characters in the comic-book genre. I have found him fascinating from the beginning. I've still got that drive to really get to the bottom of him.

The Wolverine, produced by Fox Star Studios, has released in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu in 3D and 2D.

Safety of women is a global concern: SRK

Defending Kolkata in the wake of the rising incidents of crime against women in the city, superstar Shah Rukh Khan Saturday said not only Kolkata, but the whole world had issues when it came to the safety of women.

Khan, who is the state's brand ambassador, came to his "favourite" city's rescue by pointing out that safety of women is a global concern: "This is very personal. You can't pick on a city because it's easiest to blame the system...the whole country... the whole world actually has issues as far as safety of women is concerned."

The star also stressed the need to teach children to respect women.

"We can always turn around and say that it's sad...but I think the younger people... and I feel I am young...we must change the concept of how we bring up our children at home. The thing is the mentality of not telling the boys how to be gentle, and good and respectful. So I have started doing that," Khan told reporters.

"When I talk to my son about girls, I don't talk about girlfriends. I tell him: 'Don't break a girl's heart, treat it gently and there is no way that you can look at an atrocity done on a women and if you do that you will not be forgiven by your father and mother'. So we should start from there," Khan said.

Downplaying the issue of surrogacy and his new born, SRK cleared the air by stating:" I didn't do it to promote surrogacy in the country...I did it to have a baby...I don't know how to explain that."

Directed by Rohit Shetty, " Chennai Express" is slated for an Aug 9 release. It stars Deepika Padukone as the lead actress.

Salman is Rajkumar Santoshi's lucky mascot?

After "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani", director Rajkumar Santoshi has once again roped in superstar Salman Khan for a cameo in his forthcoming film " Phata Poster Nikhla Hero". He says it's a mere co-incidence and not because he considers the actor his lucky mascot.

"I don't think like that. It was more a need of the script," Santoshi said at a press meet of the film.

"In that film ('Ajab...'), Katrina (Kaif) was a big fan of Salman and an incident happens where Salman comes in front of her. In this film, Shahid has been shown as a big fan of film stars, particularly Salman, one of the most happening stars today.

"So it is just a co-incidence, not because of the lucky mascot thing," he added.

However, Santoshi says if "Phata Poster Nikla Hero" works, then he will definitely start calling Salman his lucky mascot.

"I wish it happens, success repeats itself. Then third time I will definitely go to Salman saying that you are lucky for me, come in my film and do a scene," he said.

"Phata Poster Nikhla Hero" stars Shahid Kapoor in the lead besides Ileana D'Cruz. The film hits theatres Aug 23.

Santoshi locks horns with Firoz Nadiadwala

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 27 Juli 2013 | 21.44

On Thursday evening, RajkumarSantoshi lodged a police complaint against FirozNadiadwala at the Juhu police station, accusing the producer of threatening him. Santoshi alleged that Nadiadwala had come to his house in Krushna building in Juhu and as the director was away, he threatened the domestic help. Later. Nadiadwala apparently also sent death threats to Santoshi over phone.

Acting on the complaint, the police have provided round-the-clock police protection to Santoshi. When TOI met Santoshi at a Bandra studio, a cop was stationed outside his van.

According to him, it all began with a film called Power, which he was to direct for Nadiadwala's banner, Base Industries Group. The film, announced amid much fanfare in October 2010, with Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor and Ajay Devgn, never took off.

Santoshi says it was not his fault. "I was ready to do the film and I'm still willing to, but Firoz as producer didn't take care of the logistics. For three years I waited to hear from him, but there weren't any updates. I also have to make a living, I moved on to other projects," said Santoshi. He refused to elaborate on the nature of the threat as that the matter is subjudice.

Nadiadwala claims that it was a three-film deal with Santoshi. While Nadiadwala refused to comment on the matter, his spokesperson said, "Nadiadwala paid Santoshi Rs 6 crore in advance. He is refusing to return the money and framing fictitious charges. We will take legal action against him."

Puneet Issar's wife whacks NRI for national anthem

Incensed by a young man's tardiness in standing up for the national anthem at a cinema hall, actor Puneet Issar's wife lost her poise and thwacked him hard on the head and launched into a volley of abuse. Her tirade, eyewitnesses report, ran for almost as long as the national anthem did, leading to a furore in the hall.

The incident happened at a late night showing of Anand Gandhi's Ship of Theseus at Cinemax, Andheri, on Wednesday. The young man who is an Australian national of Indian origin was visiting Mumbai for a few days and seemingly unaware of our Goebbelsian enthusiasm for playing the national anthem at cinemas. Rather, he was engaged in a pursuit more familiar to the cinema-frequenting young across the world: canoodling with his girlfriend.

Maharashtra is the only state in India where it is compulsory to play the national anthem in cinema halls. The oblivious couple so incensed Deepali Issar who was standing behind them that she hit the young man leading to, by her own admission, "him shrieking out in agony." Several other cinema-goers too joined Deepali Issar in heckling and abusing the young man.

"My wife, who has always been a strong minded person, gave a big phatka to the man on his head," said an approving Puneet Issar.

The couple finally stood up and asked the Issars what their problem was, said our source who did not wish to be identified, perhaps terrified of incurring Deepali Issar's ire again.

"How come you don't understand what is required? Is this your respect for your country? I asked him," recalled Deepali. At which, the man responded, "But I am not an Indian." "Don't lie. You look Indian," Deepali shot back. It transpired that he was of Indian origin but an Australian citizen. Not to be outshone Puneet Issar jumped in and told the man that he ought to be handed over to the police.

With the wisdom of hindsight Deepali Issar says, "I understand hitting him was a volatile and reckless action on my part, but it was absolutely instinctive. Thankfully, he stood up after getting that blow from me."

Our source reports that the young couple then moved to another part of the theatre to watch the film in peace. The Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971, actually advocates punishment for "Whoever intentionally prevents the singing of the Indian National Anthem or causes disturbances to any assembly engaged in such singing."

What the law says
The Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971, has this to say about the national anthem, "Whoever intentionally prevents the singing of the Indian National Anthem or causes disturbances to any assembly engaged in such singing shall be punished with imprisonment for a term, which may extend to three years, or with fine, or with both." It clearly seems to indicate that sitting silently through the anthem will not invite punishment. Rather, Deepali's tantrum during the anthem might qualify as a disturbance.

The voices
"When I tell people to stand up for the national anthem, they say it is an everyday thing, how often do you want us to stand up," said Aditi Mitra. 28, who lives in Powai. Some cinema patron are so lazy that by the time they stand up half the anthem is over, she added. Nisha Chandiramani, 69 agrees that all should stand up for the anthem, but she feels Deepali had no right to abuse or hit the man.

Film-maker Mahesh Bhatt speculated that Indian-Australian in all probability followed all the rules wherever he claimed to live. "It is a sad matter that many among the elite and the wealthy think they are cool if they remain seated when the anthem is being played. The sentiment of the nation should be respected in totality, be it a theatre or any public place."

Yashesh Shat, 28, an HR professional, felt the national anthem should not be compulsorily played in a cinema hall in the first place: "You cannot enforce patriotism."

Actress Padmini Kolhapure said she has often taken foreigners to Indian cinema theatres. They don't know what to do and have to be told things, she says: "I personally believe that discipline should be enforced, but politely."

Extramarital affairs a taboo: Imran Zahid

Taking his acting career to the next level, Imran Zahid, a Mahesh Bhatt's discovery and protege of noted thespian Arvind Gaur, will now be seen in the theatrical adaptation of Mahesh Bhatt's landmark movie 'Arth'.

Imran, born and brought up in Bokaro, where his family still resides, had earlier made waves with his portrayal of Muntadhar Al Zaidi, an Iraqi journalist who had famously hurled a shoe at then US president George W Bush in Bhatt's play - The Last Salute.

Pretty much worked up with his new assignment, Imran feels gratified that he was considered worthy enough to step into Kulbhushan Kharbanda's shoes. "To even think of working in the theatrical remake of a movie like Arth is too much. I will do my best to follow Kulbhushan sir and prove myself to Bhatt saab," the actor says.

Since the movie was set in 1980s, Imran and team plans to revamp the whole script to give it a more contemporary look. "The story of Arth will remain relevant as long as the civilization exists. Since Arth was made in1982 and to keep the sensibilities of that era in mind, we will revamp the whole script, bringing in modern influences and setup. New songs would be recorded as well for the production, for which work has already begun," Imran informs.

Having extramarital affair as the theme of the story, we couldn't help but ask the actor if he feels that man-woman relationships have become socially more acceptable of late and he retorts. "See, it's very easy and normal to develop feelings for someone. It doesn't matter if you're a rickshaw puller or a CEO of some multinational. But at the same time, I don't think that society would ever approve of such relationships. Having extramarital affairs will always remain a taboo in a society, be it ours or western for that matter," the actor opines.

Though Mahesh Bhatt plans to introduce new faces to play the role of Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil in the production, Imran feels that Huma Qureshi would be a good choice for the role Shabana played in the original. "Though rest of the cast has not been decided yet but I feel that Huma would be a good choice for Shabana ji's role. She is a prolific actor and has been active in theater too. We want best possible cast for the production because it is going to be a signature show, with only two performances in Delhi and Mumbai. We are also thinking of roping in a female director because she would be in a better position to understand the emotions and direct everything," Imran says.

Apart from theater, Imran is also inching towards his ultimate dream - Bollywood. With his first film in a lead role - Marksheet, back on track, the actor is upbeat about his future prospects. "There was some issue between the director and other unit members because of which the schedule was thrown off gear. Now, with a new director roped in, the film is all set to release in April now. Apart from that, I'm also open to other offers but want to play lead roles only," Imran tells us.

No one was ready to pick 'Bhaag Milkha...': Mehra

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag has won its race at the box office but director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra says he struggled for three years to raise money for his unusual project.

Biopics are a rare genre in Bollywood and Mehra knew what he was letting himself into by making a film on one of the living legends of sports.

The director started with producing the film on his own but had to let go of 50 per cent of its rights to complete the film, which starred Farhan Akhtar as Milkha Singh.

"Raising money was a challenging task but we always believed that we were going to make it. For three years, I knocked at every door but nobody picked it up and they are all friends," Mehra told PTI in an interview.

"In Bollywood, you can count people on your fingertips. People were not willing to take the risk because of its subject. It is still a cottage industry, very family driven. Corporates have started coming in and they are bringing a sense of professionalism but it is still individually controlled," Mehra added.

Bollywood seems to be waking up to the magic of biopics recently. Sanjay Leela Bhansali is making a film on boxing champion Mary Kom with Priyanka Chopra, there are reports of a biopic on Hockey legend Dhyanchand while Anurag Basu has already announced plans for a film on Kishore Kumar.

Asked whether the film would spark a trend in Bollywood for more such original stories, Mehra seemed doubtful.

"It is still very difficult to make a non-formula film without producing it. I hope it opens a trend where we don't have to follow a formula for a film to be successful. In Bollywood, your project becomes economically viable only when you pick up a star, otherwise nobody will entertain you," Mehra said.

Released on July 12, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag earned 40 crores within a week, excluding the music and satellite rights. Mehra was happy with its business in Australia, US and UAE though he was disappointed with the UK box office collection.

But more than the Friday box office challenge, Mehra says he worries about the perpetuity of his films.

"I hope I am happy to look back at this film 20 years later. It is bad economics when you make films just for the Friday. Technology has imortalised entertainment content. I remember when RK films sold their video rights for 60 lakhs, everyone was jumping. Now, just satellite rights of a movie earn 30 crores.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag's satellite right went for 23 crores while the music rights went for 6 and half crores. I make films for perpetuity. For me, that's the only way. Who knows what future holds," Mehra said.

His choice in Farhan has been hailed unanimously but Mehra said there was a time when people thought he had made a casting mistake.

"Two years ago everyone was asking me why Farhan? I have always been very fond of Farhan. I thought he was a latent volcano. There were glimpses but his acting had not gone through the litmus test. Even when he was not acting, I had offered him Sidharth's role in Rang De Basanti. He was not ready at that time. I am happy that he played this role."

Shah Rukh avoids queries on his relationship with Salman

The much-talked about hug shared by Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan at an iftaar party a few days back may have set tongues wagging about the superstars' relationship, but the former says it's none of anybody's business.

"I will be very honest. Whether it's my relationships, friendships, personal aspects... I have never dignified it by talking about it in the public and I would like to keep it like this," the 47-year-old said at the launch of a mobile game based on his film "Chennai Express".

On July 21, SRK and Salman faced each other at the Congress leader Baba Siddique's annual iftaar party and they shook hands and hugged each other.

But SRK closed the chapter by saying that the media should not expect any kind of explanation from him on the issue ever.

"So much is said, so much is heard, and too much is written. But as far as I am concerned... I have never spoken about it and I am not going to begin now. It's for everyone to take it forth, there is nothing coming in terms of explanation," he said.

Shah Rukh and Salman were not on talking terms post the incident at Katrina Kaif's birthday bash in 2008.

The most sought after celebrity babies across the world

The most awaited blue blood baby of the English royal lineage has been born and while people are either rejoicing or questioning all the hoopla that surrounds the issue, TOI takes a close look at the most sought after celebrity babies across the world.

Suri Cruise (Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes)
Helicopter hopping Suri (7) made heads turns and raised eyebrows with her good looks and her penchant for makeup and high flamenco style heels. Often featured in the list of best looking celebrities during her younger days, she once reportedly had a wardrobe worth $3 million. Earlier seen sporting only designer clothes, handbags and makeup items, the seven year old now dresses rather modestly ever since her parents spilt. Katie has enrolled Suri in a New York based school and is trying to give her as normal a childhood as possible.

Harper Beckham (David and Victoria Beckham)
Victoria and David Beckham's bundle of joy and child number four, Harper has been a paparazzo favourite ever since she was born two years ago. The mother-daughter duo is often snapped as they sashay down runways while Victoria travels the world for her designer label related work. Dressed adorably and much like a mini fashionista, Harper was once approached by a leading children's clothes-line to be the face of their brand. The chubby cheeked Harper was ranked Britain's most stylish celebrity child in 2012.

Shiloh Jolie-Pitt (Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt)
Six-year-old Shiloh is a part of a six children brood shared by parents Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Shiloh has a Namibian passport and is the first biological child of the couple.

Blue Ivy Carter (Beyonce and Jay Z)
Blue Ivy is one of the most pampered celebrity babies. The multi-millionaire musical couple reportedly spent 1 million pound to furnish her nursery with extravagant goods that include a solid gold rocking horse and a Swarovski diamante encrusted high chair. I'm not a porn star: Poonam Pandey

Controversy queen Poonam Pandey, ready for her Bollywood innings with bold project " Nasha", is fed up of being compared to Indo-Canadian porn star Sunny Leone.

"I am tired of this comparison. I don't know why people compare me with Sunny Leone. I'm here to act and you will see me acting in the film. There are intimate scenes in the film, but there is also a love story. I'm not a porn star. Please don't compare me with Sunny Leone," Poonam said.

Poonam, who grabbed headlines during the 2011 Cricket World Cup when she offered to go nude before Team India if they won the trophy, is confident that audiences will be satisfied with her performance in "Nasha".

"So far people have only seen my bold pictures, now they will see me acting in 'Nasha', and I assure they will be completely satisfied with my performance in the film," added the young actress, who keeps her fans abreast with her daily activities through online networking platforms.

Directed by Amit Saxena, "Nasha" features debutant Shivam opposite Poonam Pandey. The film is produced by Surender Suneja and Aditya Bhatia under the banner of Eagle Home Entertainment. The film is slated for release July 26.

All eyes on these star kids!

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 23 Juli 2013 | 21.44

Five high-profile star kids launched... who's sizzling and who's fizzling out?

Varun Dhawan
Debut: Student of the Year, directed by Karan Johar

Related to: David Dhawan (Father-Filmmaker)

Verdict: Critics lauded Varun although his co-star Siddharth Malhotra gave him a tough fight. The film's box office collection was an impressive Rs 66 crore.

Industry speak: Industry experts say being part of a big banner like Dharma Productions helped Varun but are quick to point out that he is too new to command any satellite price. Jayantilal Gada, CMD, PEN India Pvt Ltd, says, "Traditionally, we buy films post release. But when it's a new face, we strictly go by the product and the project. Still, I would rate Varun on top compared to the others."

Family pride: Dad David Dhawan says, "He is very independent and one day, just came up to me and said, 'Dad, Karan has offered me a film'. Whatever he has achieved is entirely on his own steam."

Girish Taurani
Debut: Ramaiya Vastavaiya, directed by Prabhu Dheva

Related to: Kumar Taurani (Father-Producer-TIPS owner), Ramesh Taurani (Uncle-Producer-TIPS owner)

Verdict: Critics slammed him but some astute business strategy ensured that the film collected around Rs 15 crore over the weekend. Ramaiya may not have followed in the footsteps of Prabhu's earlier hits like Wanted and Rowdy Rathore, but the jury is still undecided on Girish's future in the industry.

Industry speak: According to industry experts, the good looking debutant has had a fair start but has to make the right choices henceforth. Leading distributer and exhibitor Rajesh Thadani says, "He seems to have got talent and has a big banner to guide him. That his first film is doing reasonably good business means he has been accepted."

Family pride: Dad Kumar Taurani says, "Like every newcomer today, Girish has to work hard and shouldn't be picky about his roles"

Alia Bhatt
Debut: Student of the Year, directed by Karan Johar

Related to: Mahesh Bhatt (Father-Director-Producer), Mukesh Bhatt (Uncle-Producer)

Verdict: Critics hailed her debut as super confident. With Imtiaz Ali's Highway and Abhishek Varman's 2 States based on Chetan Bhagat's novel of the same name, in Alia's kitty, the industry is sure watching out for this young actress.

Industry speak: Experts say, Alia has the potential to reach great heights but has a long way to go before becoming her own brand. Cautions Shyam Shroff, distributor, Shringar Films, "You can't remain out of sight for a long time if you are talented. But you've got to get involved with the right projects, have confidence and most importantly, come across as well behaved."

Family pride: Dad Mahesh Bhatt says, "She has connected with the youth and needs to tap her potential. But long careers don't happen by chance, and in the discovery phase, people are kind."

Arjun Kapoor
Debut: Ishaqzaade, directed by Habib Faisal

Related to: Boney Kapoor (Father- Producer), Anil Kapoor (Uncle-Actor)

Verdict: Arjun's performance won critical appreciation even as the film collected approximately Rs 46 crore at the box office. His second release Aurangzeb failed to do well at the box office but he has an interesting line up of films like Gunday and 2 States.

Industry speak: Arjun's commercial pull may be debatable but he has certainly won over the critics. Director Rensil D'Silva says, "He is a very intense actor and has a raw appeal, which reminds you of the '70s."

Family pride: Uncle Anil Kapoor says, "He is extremely driven, focused, and hard working. Also, he values his own time as well as other people's time, which is a pointer to his professionalism."

Parineeti Chopra
Debut: Ladies V/s Ricky Bahl, directed by Maneesh Sharma

Related to: Priyanka Chopra (Actor-Cousin)

Verdict: Her screen presence and spontaneity are earning her awards and accolades. While Ladies V/s Ricky Bahl's box office collection was around Rs 37 crore, Ishaqzaade's was about Rs 46 crore.

Industry speak: It is said Parineeti inspires filmmakers to write tough characters that they know she can pull off. Director Rajkumar Gupta says: "I saw Ishaqzaade and thought she is a fabulous actress. Whatever I have seen of her, she looks very natural. Her choices are good and she is doing unconventional yet main stream roles so it works very well for her."

Family pride: Parineeti's father Pawan Chopra says, "I am very thankful to God for whatever Parineeti has achieved. Though I wanted her to be a banker, I've always supported her choices."

I hope Anurag does not regret casting me: Karan Johar

While his area of expertise is wielding the camera, Karan Johar is slowly getting the hang of facing it as well. He made his first movie appearance nearly 18 years ago in the Shah RukhKhan-Kajolstarrer 'DilwaleDulhania Le Jayenge'. Then, he was seen in a blink-and-miss role in 'Om Shanti Om' and more recently, in a cameo in 'Luck by Chance'.

However, being roped in as the antagonist in Anurag Kashyap's Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Bombay Velvet is undoubtedly Karan's biggest acting assignment yet, and the filmmaker is leaving no stone unturned to give it his best shot.

Before he leaves for Sri Lanka tomorrow, TOI catches up with him to understand his thoughts about the new assignment. "This will be my first trip to Sri Lanka. I will be shooting with Ranbir, and I bet we'll take a day to settle down, as we'll end up having a few laughs over the fact that I, who generally makes films, is now facing the camera in a pivotal role," he says.

Contrary to speculation, "It's not a cameo but a proper, full-length role," Karan clarifies. Over the past two months, he has been hitting the gym with a vengeance. While he has lost nearly 7kg, it has gone largely unnoticed, we tell him. "I hired a physical trainer to get into shape, and I'm almost there," he says jubilantly. Karan has been going over the script and stays in constant touch with Anurag as preparation for his role. He also underwent a look test for the part. "I am going to look different," he says, adding, "Let's not forget that Bombay Velvet is a period film."

Significantly, the head honcho of Dharma Productions has decided not to interfere in the filmmaking process. "I will not give any inputs. I am going to be there only as an actor. Bombay Velvet is totally Anurag's baby," he says. Is there scope for physical combat between the hero and the antagonist? "No. I think Anurag has done his role sketches and casting pretty intelligently," he laughs.

Rumour has it he is charging just Rs 11 for the film. "How can I charge for this? This is not my regular job. Anurag is a friend. I am doing this for experience," he says. How did he land the role? "I thought Anurag was simply narrating his next film's story. I was quite surprised when he suggested I enact the grey character in the script." Karan will be in Sri Lanka for 10-11 days for the first schedule of Bombay Velvet but will fly down to Mumbai for a day or two before returning there. Ending the conversation on a lighter note, he says, "I hope Anurag does not regret casting me..."

Prateik to give a spiritual touch to ‘Mera Pyar Meri Amy’ tattoo

Prateik Babbar is all set to give his 'MeraPyarMeri Amy' tattoo a spiritual twist and use it to bring forth his relationship with God. A year after having broken up with actor Amy Jackson, he is saddled with the tattoo on his forearm, that he feels needs to be camouflaged soon.

Sources close to the actor claim that he did initially consider removing the tattoo but backed out as it's a painful process. Both Amy and Prateik had inked their forearms with 'Mera Pyar, Meri Amy' and 'Mera Pyar Mera Prateik' respectively during the making of Ekk Deewana Tha.

Speaking on the issue he said, "I am going to modify and cover up the tattoo to give it a spiritual look and bring out my relationship with God." So has he taken a break from relationships for now? "Relationships have been a way of life and I don't regret being in one ever. My next relationship will happen when it has to," he added.

The actor is also rumoured to have changed his co-star Amyra Dastur's name, from Amy to Amyra, as it happens to be his ex's name. However, refuting such claims he said, "I am not God, that I will be able to change her name. I am sure if I dared to do so wo mujhe kheech ke thappad marti."

Shilpa Shetty invited for an opera based on Jade Goody

UK-based playwright Afsaneh Gray will be staging an opera named and the Crowd (Wept) based on celebrity Big Brother contestant (2007) and cancer victim Jade Goody at the Opera Festival in London next month.

Afsaneh elaborates, "I became fascinated with Jade's story when I saw the way people reacted to her being diagnosed with cancer. Some people were incredibly sad about it, like they were losing someone they were close to, and others were almost angry. One person said 'She's racist. She deserves it.' I wanted to look at the way her life was reported."

The opera will have parts of Jade's life in the Indian reality show, Bigg Boss 2, where she was informed about the cancer. "All the three appearances in Big Brother are covered in the opera. We look at the way reactions to Jade changed. Particularly the difference between the criticisms she received after Celebrity Big Brother, with the racist remark against fellow contestant Shilpa Shetty, and the way she was told that she had cancer during her stint at the Bigg Boss house. It changed public perception about her, almost overnight," she adds.

Though actor Shilpa Shetty's part is not included in the opera. Afsaneh is also keen on inviting Shilpa and her husband Raj Kundra for the opera, as the actor is currently holidaying in UK, "We'd love to have her and her family come and see it and know their thoughts."

If you cannot appreciate my effort, it’s fine: Priyanka Chopra

Ever since her music video 'Exotic', featuring Pitbull was released, Priyanka Chopra has been under attack for not only the content, but also her outfits. But the actress sounded remarkably composed when TOI spoke to her about the criticism.

"I believe there is no need to be judgemental. Women have been wearing net dresses for ages now. I have worn it myself so many times, recent instance being at TOIFA. It is one of the most common combinations for a sexy outfit," she says.

PeeCee draws our attention to the other outfits she has worn for the video. "I am also wearing this silver top and shorts with chains. Then there is this whole '80s style neon swimsuit with comic book shoes. All these things are not being talked about and instead, we are stuck debating this outfit which comes for barely 10 seconds," she says and laughs throatily. Incidentally, the outfit in question looks quite similar to the ones worn by pop divas in the West and more recently by Jennifer Lopez in a music video with Pitbull.

The actress-singer says she does not really care about those who are consistently trying to write her off. "When somebody wants to pull you down and talk negative, then they will do so anyways. For me, it is a new thing to sing and perform in an international music video and I did it," she says and adds rather candidly, "I may not be the most path breaking artiste in the world but then, I have tried to do something different. I am trying to expose the world to Bollywood music without it being stereotypical. They say that an India song is bound to have 100 dancers in the background. We have done it differently here. I wanted India and I to go mainstream. If that is an effort which cannot be supported, then it's fine."

I am very greedy about being an actor: Vidya Balan

From a single mother to a sex symbol, Vidya Balan has portrayed a range of characters on the big screen and says acting allows you to live another person's world.

"I don't think it (acting) is about proving oneself. It is about inhibiting another person's world, one you have not been in before. I think as an actor, living a person's life is exciting," Vidya told media.

Vidya was recently seen as a plump loud Punjabi woman with an unusual dressing sense in Rajkumar Gupta directed Ghanchakkar and the actress says she always finds a way to connect with her characters, and managed to do with this one too.

"There is also a part of them, which I connect with. My character in Ghanchakkar is not someone who I could identify with her initially, but the point of identification was that she was just happy with herself."

"I might not be happy with myself all the time, but I love people like that. You find that point of identification with the character," she said.

Although at the box office, Ghanchakkar couldn't do much, but the critics and audiences praised Vidya's performance.

She finds appreciation humbling.

"I feel humbled when people say that. I am just doing work, which I believe in," said the actress who played central roles in Kahaani and The Dirty Picture, but was okay being second fiddle in Ghanchakkar.

"In Ghanchakkar, Sanju ( Emraan Hashmi) was the central character. I was not the protagonist. I was ok with it as I love the character. I don't have set notions and don't take on that kind of pressure. My only dream was to be an actor and I am living my dream to the fullest," she said.

Vidya is married to Siddharth Roy Kapur, managing director of Studios, Disney UTV, but unlike her husband, she does not want to enter production business.

"I don't want to start producing films. I am very greedy about being an actor and I always have a producer at home," she said.

What about creative satisfaction?

"After The Dirty Picture, I thought I had done everything that needed to be done. But I was even taken aback when Rajkumar Gupta came to me with Ghanchakkar. I felt grateful to him that he could think of me in this diametrically opposite character. But he was also making a diametrically opposite film."

Now Vidya will be seen with Farhan Akhtar in Shaadi Ke Side Effects.

Salman-Shah Rukh faceoff at a Bandra studio?

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 21 Juli 2013 | 22.46

It must have been ages since we saw alleged rivals Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan at one place.

Coincidentally or deliberate, the friends-turned-foes often end up averting a face-off, be it at airports or events.

However, we heard that the two were most likely to bump into each other, as they had their shoots scheduled at the same Bandra studio in Mumbai on Saturday.

At the time of going to press, our source at the venue revealed, "Both Salman and Shah Rukh's vanity vans have been parked right next to each other. While Salman is expected to start shooting for Bigg Boss, SRK too will be here to shoot for an ad. SRK won't be here for long, though. The two will be shooting in the same vicinity."

Since the two do not see eye-to-eye, it will be interesting to know what happens if they spot each other.

Kalki as Rabindranath Tagore’s muse on stage

Kalki Koechlin will play Victoria Ocampo, Rabindranath Tagore's muse, in a play written and directed by Manav Kaul.

Titled Colour Blind, the play will travel to various cities before a final show in Mumbai.

The play won't take an encyclopedic look at Tagore's life, but will explore the poet's discovery of himself in his relationship with Ocampo — and death. "Yes, Kalki is very much part of the play, but I'm not acting in it," said Manav, who was last seen on screen in Kai Po Che.

Theatre actor Satyajit Sharma will play Tagore.

Tagore and Argentine poet Victoria spent two months together in 1924 on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. The actual nature of their relationship has given rise to much speculation and critical study over the decades.

Girls today are far more disciplined: Hema Malini

Hema, who has had the longest run at the BO with the blockbuster 'Sholay', says she loved her job back then, but would have loved to be part of present day Bollywood.

"I was happy in the times I worked in, but I would have liked to be part of the industry now, as the money is pouring in like anything for stars who are successful. It was was not so during our times. Though we worked hard, the money then was less, certainly not the kind actors get now," she says, adding, "But as far as the roles are concerned, I had the opportunity to play nice roles, so I have no regrets about my career."

There's a time and place for everything, even in cinema, believes Hema. "It is wrong to compare the cinema of the past and that which is being created now," she says. "The kind of roles I did reflected the attitude and thoughts of those times. For instance, the character I played in Khushboo was based on Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyaya's novel, but if you make that film with Deepika or Katrina today, it will not be successful, since we cannot relate them with such characters. With time everything changes and there is nothing wrong in that," the actress added.

Girls today are far more disciplined
Hema, who refused any skin show during her hey days, says there is nothing wrong in how Indian actresses are dressing up on screen today. "They have great bodies and they look nice on screen. When girls in our homes are wearing such clothes, how can we expect stars to only wear saris? Today heroines are expected to have great figures and they really have to work hard to get those well-toned bodies. During our times we made no effort to change our natural body structure. We used to have lavish food on the sets brought by our mothers, but girls today are far more disciplined," she points out.

Never too late for a second innings
Esha may have tied the knot and bid goodbye to films, but mommy Hema says she aspired for a much more successful career for her eldest in films. "She is a talented actor and deserved much more success than she got. Though luck plays an important role, but Esha should have been more conscious while selecting films. If she had selected better films, things would have been different. Since I didn't want to put any pressure on her, so I gave her the freedom to choose her films. I advised her, but never forced her to do things. Even now it is not late, she can start a new innings in films, as she has the urge to do so. Moreover, perceptions about a married actor have also changed now. A star's marital status is no longer a hindrance in their career," avers Hema. "As far as Ahana is concerned she is very creative and wants to remain behind the camera. She wants to make a different kind of film, and is still on the lookout for a good subject," she adds.

I'd like to be really careful while making a film now
Her last directorial venture, Tell Me Oh Khuda failed to create a buzz at the BO, and so, Hema says she'd like to be "really careful" while making films now. "Filmmaking involves a lot of money and hard work which should not be wasted, though nobody knows which film will be a hit. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is a huge hit, but as far as the story of the film goes, there wasn't much to it. For me, the subject should be strong since I would like to work with new faces; running after big names is futile, since they have no time. Good subjects can make stars out of new faces," she says.

No filmmaker keen to cash in on Ranbir-Katrina’s chemistry

As Deepika bags Imtiaz Ali's next with Ranbir, we wonder why no filmmaker seems keen to cash in on the real life couple's chemistry

From partying in Ibiza, to dining at posh restaurants and exchanging expensive gifts, Katrina Kaif is ruling Ranbir Kapoor's heart at the moment. But curiously enough, when it comes to ruling the marquee, her rival and Ranbir's ex Deepika Padukone seems to be enjoying an advantage.

Reports suggest Deepika is set to rekindle her Yeh Jawaani... chemistry with RK and has clinched that coveted role opposite him in Imtiaz Ali's next produced by Sajid Nadiadwala. Much to the disappointment of Kat, who had been pitching hard for the same.

A source close to Imtiaz's film told us, "The final decision to cast Deepika was taken two days ago. Katrina is not doing the film."

So what really is tipping the scales in Dippy's favour? Why is it that despite the success of Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahaani and an interesting turn in Rajneeti, this real life couple is not really firing up the filmmakers' fancy?

There were reports that Katrina was the initial choice for Yeh Jawaani... as well but Dippy eventually impressed the makers enough to swing it. Producer of Ajab Prem..., Ramesh Taurani, in fact hinted that Deepika beat Katrina in both Yeh Jawaani... and Imtiaz's next simply because 'she suited the role better'. "We don't cast actors simply because they are or were in a relationship," he says, adding, "What is taken into account is, whether they are appropriate for the character."

However, trade analyst Vinod Mirani said rather candidly, "Deepika suits Ranbir much better. Next to RK, Katrina looks more mature. Secondly, Deepika's growth as an actress cannot be discounted. Thirdly, Katrina's biggest charm, her syrupy smile, is kind of wearing off."

There is also the other view that RK has reached that point in his career where no one really cares about who is his leading lady. Says Mirani: "With Yeh Jawaani..., RK has established himself as a surefire crowd puller. At least 60 per cent of the audience comes in simply because of him, the rest for the film itself. And casting a fresh face opposite someone like him cannot backfire."

Perhaps which is why, Abhinav Kashyap did not hesitate to pair RK with newcomer Pallavi Sharda in Besharm or Vicky Singh a Jacqueline Fernandez in Roy.

Girish Wankhede, GM, Marketing, PVR and Cinemax said, "I am in sync with the pulse of the audience. While you cannot take away the credit from Deepika or Katrina, you have to listen to the 'oohs'and the 'aahs' for Ranbir in the lobby during the intervals. Cocktail was the turning point in Deepika's career graph and the two ladies are now running neck to neck."

Ad-man, writer, lyricist Prasoon Joshi takes a more objective view of the developments, saying, "People tend to go for what is in. At the moment, it is Ranbir-Deepika."
