Prasoon Joshi to direct another film on Milkha Singh

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 30 Juni 2013 | 21.44

National award-winning lyricist Prasoon Joshi, who has written the script of the upcoming biopic on legendary athlete Milkha Singh, is not done with his subject.

Joshi has started working on a script based on the athlete's life post retirement. He plans to direct the film too.

"I got interested in how Milkhaji shares such a beautiful relationship with his wife and son. In 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' we have only documented his career, but I felt there was so much more to the man than just his professional endeavour," Joshi said.

Joshi is also keen to capture Milkha's relationship with his son Jeev, a successful golfer, on celluloid. This would not be an extended biopic or a sequel of 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' as he would be incorporating some fictional elements, but Joshi does not rule out the possibility of casting Farhan Akhtar again in the lead.

"Farhan has stunned everybody, including Milkhaji. If things work out, he should be a part of the film I write," the lyricist-writer said.

'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' is directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and releases on July 12.

Sonam Kapoor earns a 'new' tag

In her six years in Hindi cinema, Sonam Kapoor has had a superhit (I Hate Luv Storys) and flops (Saawariya, Delhi-6, Thank You and Players). But her see-sawing graph didn't stop Bollywood's big daddys like Aditya Chopra and Karan Johar from giving this star-daughter further opportunities.

The reason is simple: they know Sonam is pedigree and she has potential. Of course, like it is with most actors, Sonam has only just come into her own.

Currently she is riding high on the success of Raanjhanaa. Always dismissed as a 'poster girl for fashion', she is happy that her latest film has earned her the 'thinking-actress' tag.

Sonam's portrayal of Zoya, her character in the musical romance, has been equally appreciated by the critics and the audience. Says director Aanand L Rai, "She is an underutilised actor. There is much more to her than what meets the eye. It's a pleasure working with actors who have the hunger to perform. She has evolved as an actor in my film."

"Sonam is a perfect blend of beauty and brains and her portrayal of Zoya has proved it beyond doubt," says a trade source, adding, "She is talented, but it took a film like Raanjhanaa to extract a spectacular performance from her."

"Sonam is very precious not only to me, but also the industry and modern-day cinema and that makes me very proud. To have a strong female protagonist has been a tradition in Indian cinema. Sonam combines beauty and talent like no one else. Having worked with her in Delhi-6 (2009) and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, I've observed her closely. Now the butterfly is coming out of the cocoon.. it's the most beautiful thing to watch; when the butterfly emerges out of the cocoon." says Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra.

Farhan Akhtar's 'milky' break!

And when the man in question is none other than the versatile Farhan Akhtar, one has to expect surprises galore! This was apparent when he made a stopover on the sets of Sony Entertainment Television's popular singing reality show Indian Idol Junior to promote his upcoming flick Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and gave everyone a 'milky' break!

Farhan Akhtar made an appearance along with director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra on the show and was seen at his funny best. Be it pulling Judge Shekhar, Shreya or Vishal's leg or tickling show host Karan Wahi's funny bone, he did it all! But the icing on the cake was his spontaneous milky jig, in store for Indian Idol Junior singing sensations, judges and hosts - Karan and Mandira.

Director Omprakash Mehra let know all contestants about Milkha Singh's life struggle and the fact that he loved drinking milk. And that was it! To everyone's surprise, Farhan called for a doodhwala bhaiyya with a huge milk container in order to feed milk to all.

The connect was Milkha Singh's intense fondness for milk. Show judge Shreya however turned him down by declining to guzzle it. She was heard saying "I hate drinking milk. I have only drunk milk once in my childhood."

That's not all, show host Karan Wahi couldn't help but taking the entire container to where Farhan was seated and requesting the spot boys for a straw so that Farhan can drink it all.

And if you thought the fun ended here, Farhan captivated all by putting his dancing shoes on and tapping on the song Zinda from one of his flicks only to be joined by a contestant Eman Choudhury who danced with him on another song.

Overwhelmed by the talent of Indian Idol Junior Farhan, in fact, tweeted about his experience with the kids and said "What a treat the Indian Idol juniors are...Pure talent. So lucky to have heard them live. Best wishes to them all."

Looks like after Salman Khan Idol Juniors have found another fan in Farhan Akhtar.

Catch the fun with Farhan Akhtar only on Indian Idol Junior on Sunday June 30, 8.30pm only on Sony Entertainment Television

Housing society drags Preity Zinta into dispute with Amrohis

They say Zinta must represent deceased Shandar Amrohi; actress to file affidavit to distance herself from the family

The ongoing property dispute between the Amrohis and Cozy Home society at Pali Hill has taken a new turn, with the residents asking the court to declare actress Preity Zinta as legal heir of Shandar Amrohi, son of legendary film maker Kamal Amrohi. They want Zinta to represent Shandar, who died in 2011. Kamal, who had filed the case against the society, had died two decades ago.

Meanwhile, fed up with her name being linked to the Amrohis, Zinta has decided to file an affidavit in the court saying she has nothing to do with the family. Around two years ago, Shandar had declared that he would be leaving his property to Zinta, who was like a 'daughter' to him, before he had a fall out with the actress.

The dispute over the Cozy Home goes back by 25 years, when Kamal had filed a case saying the structure stood on the land belonging to his wife, actress Meena Kumari. At present, the society comprising five buildings houses nearly35 families.

According to Kamal's second son Tazdar Amrohi, his father decided to go to the court after residents did not pay the lease rent for years. After Meena Kumari and Kamal died, his sons Tazdar and Shandar continued the battle.

In some time, Shandar gave away his rights to Tazdar, who alone pursued the case. The society however, claimed that the land belonged to Meena Kumari, and after her death no one owned the land as Tazdar and Shandar were not her real sons. "We continued to pay rent out of respect, even after Meena Kumari's death. Tazdar, meanwhile, sold the plot to a someone, but the court refused to accept him as owner. Now Tazdar is claiming to be the owner himself," said a resident of Cozy Home.

On Friday, representatives of the society told the court that as Shandar was a party to the case, someone must represent him. They then asked the court to accept Zinta as his legal heir and call her for hearings. According to some reports, Shandar had adopted Zinta at a time when he and his brother were engaged in a legal battle against sister Rukhsar and her son Waseem.

Ravi Poplai, chairman of the Cozy Home society, said, "The matter is sub-judice. I cannot comment on it at the moment." Shandar's widow, however, said they never adopted Zinta and has also filed an affidavit in the Bandra court. Tazdar said, "There is no provision of adoption in Muslim law. Preity is a sweet girl and helped my brother in times of need, but she being legal heir is out of question."

The Bandra court has fixed July 5 as next date of hearing.

Alia Bhatt wants to paint Hrithik Roshan

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 29 Juni 2013 | 21.44

Yes, she can act, but Alia Bhatt can also paint! The young actress says if she could, she would love to draw a portrait of Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan some day as she considers him a "Greek god".

Present at the inauguration of an art gallery Splassh here, Alia said: "I think I would love to paint Hrithik Roshan. He looks like a Greek god. I would love to paint him, but I don't think I would be able to as I can't do portraits."

Otherwise, she loves to pick up the paintbrush and use it creatively. The 20-year-old, in fact, made a charcoal painting and has hung it up in her room.

Alia's choice is clear when it comes to a special favourite in paintings - she loves lions.

"I am very obsessed with lions. I had once tried making one, but it turned out to be small and kind of abstract. I am not very good but I will try again to paint a lion. I have two months off, so I will paint," she said.

Alia is currently back from a schedule of 2 States with Arjun Kapoor. The film is directed by Abhishek Varman.

She has wrapped up shooting for Imtiaz Ali's Highway, which stars Randeep Hooda opposite her.

Sonakshi Sinha is miffed with rumours of her lovemaking scene

Sonakshi Sinha is seething with anger over recent reports that she shot her first-ever lovemaking scene under the watchful eyes of her mother, Poonam.

According to sources close to her, she has taken offence over such rumours being spread by the PR team of the film. She has gone ahead and told the producers and PR teams of her upcoming films, to make sure such cheap tactics are not deployed to promote her projects.

However, when TOI sent a text message to the actress asking her reactions on the reports, she chose not to reply. However, a friend of the actress called up to explain, "Sonakshi is a thorough professional. Every filmmaker she has worked with so far can vouch for this. These baseless reports have peeved her."

The reports had claimed that Sonakshi's mother had landed at the sets of Vikramaditya Motwane's upcoming film to ensure that the sequence was shot in an artistic way and did not look raunchy.

The friend added, "Sonakshi is a director's actor and doesn't interfere with his vision. She signs a film only when she has complete faith in the filmmaker and the story. At the same time, she makes it clear beforehand what she is comfortable doing and what she is not. She doesn't require her mother or anyone else to supervise her on the sets."

When Big B got a surprise visit from Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson was always surrounded by fans wherever he went. They would do anything to get a glimpse of the 'King of Pop'. However, what is interesting is the fact that Michael came knocking on our very own superstar Amitabh Bachchan's door, though by mistake.

This incident happened many years ago when Big B was in New York to attend Michael's concert and as fate would have it both he and the pop king were staying in the same hotel. Michael came to Big B's room and knocked the door thinking it was his and hence was greeted by a pleasantly surprised Indian superstar. As a result Big B he got a gratis visit from Michael too.

Big B chose to disclose this accidental meet on Michael's fourth death anniversary. "Its 4 years since the death of Michael Jackson ... a true phenomena, if ever there was one .. I had met him in New York once, when he had knocked on my Hotel room door by mistake, thinking it was his ... we were staying in the same Hotel .. earlier I had been to a concert of his in Jacksonville .. had no tickets, no room bookings, nothing ... but managed to get a place right on the last tier of the stadium he was performing in .. such fantastic memories," Big B posted on his Facebook night on June 25.

A baby in Shah Rukh Khan's house

The mystery around Shah Rukh Khan's rumoured surrogate baby has taken yet another turn.

According to reports in a certain section of the media — reports over which Shah Rukh has assiduously maintained a silence - the baby is due to be born in July. But according to information available with this newspaper there seems to be another baby in Shah Rukh's and Gauri's life these days.

This child, a male, was delivered by Gauri Khan's sister-in-law NamitaChibber. She was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital on June 4 under the care of Dr IndiraHinduja.

Dr Hinduja is a pioneering doctor in assisted reproductive health who had delivered India's first test-tube baby in 1986; she was approached by Shah Rukh Khan a few months ago to discuss the possibility of assisted delivery, sources say.

The baby delivered by Namita Chibber was born premature at seven months and has since been kept at the hospital's neo-natal intensive care unit. The baby is in the care of paediatrician Dr Cyrus Contractor, who is closely monitoring its health.

According to several family members of patients we spoke to, Gauri Khan has been routinely visiting the hospital and Shah Rukh was spotted there earlier on Tuesday when he went for a follow up visit for his shoulder injury; he also visited the NICU that day.

While the baby — unconfirmed reports suggest he is called Abram, a variant of Abraham which means father of multitudes (nations) — continues to remain in the NICU, sources say he might be kept there until he attains healthy weight, Namita Chibber was discharged on Friday. The discharge form carries not Chibber's or her husband's telephone number but Shah Rukh Khan's private number. Though of course that's not proof that the baby is SRK and Gauri's, it does suggest that there is a new child in their larger family.

Shah Rukh has been dodging all talk of a surrogate baby, neither denying nor confirming anything each time he has been specifically asked about an addition to his family. The star would instead prefer to focus attention on his upcoming film Chennai Express that releases this Eid amid great expectations.

I am not in love with Uday: Nargis Fakhri

Nargis Fakhri talks about men, movies and how she does not believe in the institution of marriage

"I don't think I'd jeopardise my career by getting into a relationship at this stage," says Nargis Fakhri when we meet her at a suburban cafe, adding, "Moreover, I don't find the need. I'm surrounded by a bunch of friends. Boyfriends are troublesome and unnecessary."

Surprising, considering the Rockstar actress has been more in the news for her various liaisons than her film roles. Her link-up with Uday Chopra has been a big talking point after he tweeted his love for her recently.

Says Nargis dismissively, "Uday's only teasing. I have known him, but I am most definitely not in love with him. I am here to be the best that I can be, make money, and take off." Not that she hasn't been in love but "the guy went to Brazil and got married," she says.

Career-wise, apart from Madras Cafe and the Shaukeen remake, she is also excited about her special song and dance number in Rajkumar Santoshi's Phata Poster Nikla Hero. "I want to do that number so when I'm 70, holding a walking stick and wearing fake teeth, I can tell my grandchildren, 'look kids, that's your granny gyrating her oomph'."

Talking about becoming a grandmother, is marriage on the cards? "I don't believe in the institution of marriage. It's a challenge to spend all your life with one person. Emotional dependency weakens you," she quips.

Akshay is the strongest person I have met in my life: Imran Khan

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 28 Juni 2013 | 21.44

We are meeting Imran Khan at his jazzed up bungalow, home to memorabilia and anecdotes from the past and present. His new Ferrari stands next to his first Zen, knickknacks from each of his films find pride of place as does an old transistor radio which his grandfather used. The place looks charmingly old-fashioned and refreshingly young - much like the man who has put it together.
Excerpts from the conversation:

Where have you been?
I am here to create awareness about the film. But once it's done, I have no responsibility towards anyone. It feels so banal for me to pick my phone and tell my PR about my new haircut. I can't think of sharing all this.

While your peers Ranbir, Arjun, Ranveer, Varun appear to be in a hurry to achieve a lot of things, you seem to be doing things at your own pace...
Last night, I was at Arjun's party and all these names were there. I saw them and realised how different every guy is and how everyone wants something different from life. (Pauses) I told the birthday boy that I am working 25 days a month and we get to spend just a few days with close people. I don't want to wake up and feel miserable about going to a set where I hate my co-stars, or don't believe in the film I am working in. I want to be happy about who I am working with. It's a calling, and each one of us looks at it differently.

You certainly don't seem to have the urgency to grab more roles, endorsements, being in the spotlight.
See, the urgency is there when you like your work. Some people work for the wrong reason, the motivations are incorrect. I am not the kind of person who reads about an actor signing up with a certain director and feels bad about it. That is not how you should be motivated. So yes, I choose to be like this.

With Matru... not living up to expectations, were you disappointed?
Yes, it's the film I put my most into, the toughest role I have done so far. So naturally it was upsetting. But as an actor, you have to be prepared for such things.

In Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai, we hear you had a tough time coping with Akshay's fitness regime while shooting in Oman.
(Smiles) Four in the morning doesn't work for me! I would join him in the evening after pack-up. But physically, he is the strongest person I have met in my life. Just think about it. He can do 100 pull-ups at one go. I can barely do three or four. It was very painful.

Your character,Aslam, is very different from your image of a lover boy. How difficult was it to delve into this space?
When I went to meet Milan and Ekta for the first time, I was very sceptical. When I eventually sat down to read the script, every page after page blew me off. The stakes are high and the level of drama here is something I haven't had in my earlier films. Besides, I underplay my performance so that the audience sits up and pays attention. I realised this when I saw the work of Aaron Sorkin - you don't always need to pander to expectations. And that is why I picked up this project.

With both you and Aamir busy, how does the family manage to meet often?
We randomly bump into each other at events and we are like 'arre you are in town?' On birthdays and special events, we go to a ground and play soccer. We are a close-knit family but we don't meet as often as we should.

Sonam and Ranbir Kapoor patch up at Arjun's birthday bash

The new generation of Bollywood A-listers like to work hard and party harder. And Wednesday saw all the nouveau stars letting their hair down at Anil Kapoor's Juhu residence with Sonam Kapoor playing the perfect host.

The occasion was Arjun Kapoor's 28th birthday and the guest list included Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra, Ranveer Singh, Parineeti Chopra, Katrina Kaif, Imran Khan with wife Avantika, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Siddharth Malhotra and Dhanush. But the man who made heads turn was Ranbir Kapoor. Sonam and her Saawariya co-star have not been on the best of terms post their debut film.

Often in the past, both Sonam and Ranbir have lashed out against each other in sections of the media. However, it seems six years is long enough time to heal the wounds. A source said, "Sonam is riding high on the success of Raanjhanaa. And when you're happy, you tend to let bygones be bygones. She has moved on, so has Ranbir. Post Saawariya, Sonam was dating Punit Malhotra and Ranbir was in a relationship with Deepika. Over the years, both have matured. Sonam had even invited Punit for the party, who also dropped by."

Ranbir and Sonam are said to be childhood friends, who got closer on the sets of Saawariya. But slowly, things soured. It all took an ugly turn in 2010, when Ranbir tagged Sonam as 'not sexy' and the latter retaliated by airing some equally strong views on Karan Johar's chat show. As and when she was asked if she would apologise to Ranbir for her remarks, she had refused outright.

In an interview given to TOI in 2011, she had said, "Well, it was Ranbir who started it all by saying 'Sonam is not sexy'. I just shot back and said 'Ranbir is not sexy'. If a man says it, chalta hai. But when a woman says the same thing, nahi chalta hai? That's sexist! Why should I say 'sorry' to him? Just because his father made a hue and cry about it? If Ranbir apologises to me, I shall too." To which, Ranbir had said, "She is a bit of a drama queen but I like her." And Sonam shot back, "I am an actress, darling. If I don't do drama, who else will?" The war of words continued for a while and the 'friendship' went down the drain. So much so that Ranbir's friend, Vicky Singh, had to shelve a film in 2011 which he had planned with the duo during their Saawariya days.

The source added, "People were a bit surprised to see Ranbir at the party but he got along with Sonam famously—their interaction was very warm with no references of the bitter past." The party went on till the wee hours of the morning.

Madhuri Dixit refuses to use cuss words in Dedh Ishqiya

While Abhishek Chaubey's 2010 film 'Ishqiya' was generously peppered with expletives, the sequel 'Dedh Ishqiya' steers clear of the use of profanity. Reason being Madhuri Dixit, who plays the lead role in the film, wasn't comfortable using foul language unlike Vidya Balan, who had no qualms spouting the choicest of cuss words in the original.

Apparently, Madhuri expressed her reservations to Chaubey, who agreed, also because he thought the actress' character (a Begum) didn't quite demand the use of offensive language as opposed to that played by Vidya in Ishqiya.

Dedh Ishqiya sees the return of Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi as the crooks they played in the original. The film has been shot against the backdrop of Lucknow city and Chaubey is busy working on its post-production. It now remains to be seen whether the makers' decision to do away with the gaalis ensures a U/A rating for the film.

If I stop taking risks, I will eventually crumble: Emraan Hashmi

Emraan Hashmi has gradually established himself as a leading Bollywood star and he says it was taking big risks and sticking with them that has brought him success.

In his decade-long career, the 34-year-old actor moved on from doing repetitive roles in the initial years of his career to eventually garnering critical acclaim for his performances in "Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai", "The Dirty Picture" and "Shanghai".

"Somewhere after you have few successful films, there is a fear of losing what you have got. It is very easy in the beginning as you are a risk taker, have nothing to lose and there is no perception about you.

"Things slowly build up and then you have this fear that what if tomorrow I don't have this. But I have realised that what has given me successful films is risk itself. So if I stop taking risks, I will eventually crumble. I will continue to take risks," Hashmi told in an interview.

The actor will be seen playing a suave thief in his upcoming film "Ghanchakkar" directed by Rajkumar Gupta. The film is a comic-thriller and will hit theatres this Friday.

"I was convinced about the role after I read the script. It is a thriller suspense and not just a comedy film. The story is great, interesting characters and it will change the way we see comedies. It is one of those films where there is an edge of the seat moment and suddenly a funny moment," Hashmi said.

"Ghanchakkar" also stars Vidya Balan, who is playing Hashmi's loud, over-the-top wife. This is their second collaboration. They have previously worked together in hit 2011 film "The Dirty Picture".

"'Dirty Picture' was a different kind of kinkiness, here we have upped the quotient. The equation between me and Vidya has been built as an unconventional, odd couple. In the film, we have been married for 5 years and ours is a very dysfunctional household. I hope that people will like this zone in the film," he said.

Hashmi has a very interesting lined up of films. He will be seen in Rensil D'Silva's "Ungli", which will hit theatres this September. He is also part of Oscar-winning filmmaker Danis Tanovic's "White Lies".

Besides that the actor has signed Karan Johar and Ekta Kapoor's co-production "Badtameez Dil", "Shatir" directed by Kunal Deshmukh and Vikram Bhatt's supernatural 3D film "Invisible".

I burst into tears after watching 'Bhaag Milkha': Milkha Singh

Legendary athlete Milkha Singh said that some scenes of soon-to-release "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag", his biopic by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, made him emotional as they reminded him of his days of hardship and struggle.

"I became very emotional after watching certain scenes as they reminded me of my days of struggle. The film brought alive memories of the Partition when I did not have a job or enough food. I burst into tears to see my initial days unfold on the big screen," the 82-year-old sportsman told over phone.

The Chandigarh-based 'Flying Sikh' charged just Rs 1 to let Mehra make his biopic. Milkha was all praise for actor Farhan Akhtar, who plays the sportsman in the film. Milkha said a special screening was arranged for him recently and he was impressed by the work of Mehra and Akhtar. "Farhan looks like my duplicate in the film. He has done a great job. Rakeysh and also the dialogues and the lyrics by Prasoon Joshi have impressed me a lot," he said, adding that entire Milkha family is looking forward to the release of the movie and its success.

Singh is currently attending to his ailing wife in Gurgaon, who recently suffered a fracture after she slipped in the bathroom. Though his life has got a big screen treatment, Singh is not a movie buff in real life unlike his golfer son Jeev Milkha Singh. "Honestly speaking, I haven't watched a single Hindi film since 1960 and my knowledge about Bollywood is poor. The last films, I remember seeing are those of Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand and Ashok Kumar including Shri 420, Awara and Mahal, but Jeev is a movie buff. Even on tours, he makes it a point to watch Hindi movies regularly. "In fact, it was Jeev's decision to chose the director, who was impressed after watching 'Rang De Basanti'," he said.

Recalling his days as a sportsman, Milkha said he still regrets missing Rome Olympic medal. "Until my last breath, I will remember that and before I die I want someone else to win that medal for India. The present-day youth gives me hope. I want them to get get inspired by watching the movie, which is the main idea behind the film," he added.

Also, starring Sonam Kapoor, the film is slated to release on July 12.

Entertainment doesn't only come from songs and dances: Prakash Jha

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 27 Juni 2013 | 21.44

Audiences derive pleasure from all kinds of films, ace director Prakash Jha feels, pointing out that entertainment does not mean just "songs, dances and comedy".

"People enjoy all kinds of things. Films like 'Kahaani' and 'Raajneeti' provide tremendous entertainment value. Entertainment value does not necessarily come from songs, dances and comedy. It comes from seriously entertaining subjects as well," Jha told IANS in an exclusive interview.

If films that entertain are important, so are films on core topics, said Jha who started his feature film making journey with the 1984 "Hip Hip Hurray". The film was about a computer engineer who takes up a temporary job of a football coach, moulds a bunch of hooligans into good players and leads them to victory.

Often described as a serious filmmaker delving into eclectic issues in his offerings, the director says apart from the topic, a strong storyline is equally vital for him.

"Topics are social...I don't pick up topics and make films on them. I have a story...a great emotional story," said Jha who has proved his point with films like "Daamul", "GangaaJal", "Aarakshan" and "Chakravyuh".

His forthcoming film "Satyagraha" too deals with corruption, told through a businessman and a grieving father.

Talking about "Satyagraha", Jha said: "This is the story of a father and son. I found the story and set it in today's world of protest. How someone who is absolutely capitalist and has greed on his mind all the time meets this old man who has lost his son. These two people come together and realise that even though their values don't meet, yet there's a bond. That prospers and both of them change."

Just like his earlier films, "Satyagraha", which has a host of actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgn, Arjun Rampal and Kareena Kapoor, involved a lot of pre-production work.

"We shot it exactly within the schedule which we had planned...not one day extra. We had fun while shooting. We do a lot of pre-production and a lot of preparation goes into it," he said.

For a filmmaker, the biggest challenge is to strike a balance between the audience's reaction and critics' ratings.

"That is the challenge...you have to tell a good story and while telling it, if there are things that touch you...that is the whole idea," he said.

Shah Rukh Khan's secret visit to a local clinic

In a surprise visit that brought South Bombay nearly to a standstill, actor Shah Rukh Khan visited a clinic in the Navsari building at Fort around 5 pm yesterday.

Wife Gauri Khan, who we were made to be believe was in London all this while, was present with her husband. Amidst reports of the couple planning a third child through surrogacy, this unscheduled visit to the doc was enough to get us curious.

When TOI investigated further, we were rather surprised to find the real cause.

SRK was only visiting eye-specialist Dr Burjor P Banaji for a regular eye check-up. Incidentally, Banaji also happens to be the doctor who treated the late Balasaheb Thackeray. SRK's appointment lasted for nearly 45 minutes, and the superstar, quite graciously clicked pictures with the clinic staff.

From what we could gather, SRK complained of burning sensation in the eye. "A mild concern which inevitably strikes when you get closer to 50," said the good doctor.

I don't consider myself a playback singer: Farhan Akhtar

Farhan Akhtar is not only a successful filmmaker and actor, but he can also sing. He has crooned songs like "Rock On!!" and "Tum ho toh" but says he doesn't consider himself a playback singer, though he feels that singing enhances his performance in a movie.

"I sing (in a film) only when I feel that any enhancement can happen in my performance in the film. I don't consider myself a playback singer," Farhan said on the set of singing reality show "Indian Idol Junior".

"For me, singing is one more aspect of enhancing my performance and I approach singing that way only," said Farhan, who was on the set to promote his forthcoming film " Bhaag Milkha Bhaag".

Farhan made his singing debut with 2008 musical "Rock On!!". He sang five tracks in the movie. Later, in the 2011 film "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara", he lent voice to two tracks -"Senorita" and "Toh Zinda Ho Tum".

His next acting project, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag", based on the life of former athlete Milkha Singh, releases July 12.

Manisha comes home with Deepti Naval by her side

Last evening, ManishaKoirala landed in Mumbai and drove straight to her house in Versova, officially putting a seven-month battle with cancer behind her. The actress had been diagnosed with the disease in November last year and was briefly treated at the Jaslok Hospital before moving to the US.

The 42-year-old actress maintained a vibrant and cheerful demeanour as she stepped out of the airport, say eye-witnesses, a picture of confidence as she went up to her house that she had left to undergo treatment in Manhattan, New York. But Manisha was not alone. Her close friend and compatriot Deepti Naval was with her.

"We were in the same flight," Deepti told TOI soon after they had landed. "Manisha is looking great and healthy. I had gone to the US for my nephew's wedding. We coordinated with each other so that we could return on the same flight. She'll have to go to the US for a few checkups though, but you can't imagine my happiness today. Manisha is now ready to resume her normal life in Mumbai," said the veteran actress, one of the few to have been in constant touch with Manisha during her long battle with the ailment. She was also by Manisha's side when she had been admitted to a New York hospital for surgery and subsequent treatment.

A few days ago, Manisha had posted on her social networking page, 'Got to know (about) lovely rains in Mumbai. Can't wait to be on my terrace!'

"I have special memories of that terrace," Jackie Shroff, Manisha's other friend told us last evening. "My Manu (as he fondly calls her) used to sit there, enjoy good food and chat for long hours. I am looking forward to going over to her place very soon and revisit those moments. Manisha was determined to beat cancer- and she has. I used to chat with her on the phone when she was being treated in America. Trust me, she never for a moment sounded despondent or depressed.

Manisha's other friend in the film industry, Gulshan Grover, told TOI, "I will go over to Manisha's place on Thursday. In the past she has had low phases, but bounced back every time. This time was no exception. We believe that the next extraordinary performance in Bollywood will come from Manisha. She is raring to go. I think she should be given the same nickname as Rahul Dravid: The Wall. She is so very tough."

According to Grover, the actress had recently started going for long walks in Manhattan. "As and when things don't go right for her, she has this knack of taking to some activity, mostly painting or reading, and she pursues it so diligently that she stops worrying. This mental strength is her biggest asset. I am so glad that she is my friend," he said. That Manisha is raring to face her familiar world again has been evident from her tweets. Besides expressing a desire to be back on her beautiful terrace, she also posted pictures of herself in her new avatar - tonsured head and her sparkling eyes looking straight into the camera. Recently, she also attended her first public event organised by a Nepalese TV channel, where she looked resplendent in a summer hat.

Why Kiran Rao is excited about husband Aamir Khan's 'Dhoom 3'

Aamir Khan has two releases lined up - 'P.K.' and 'Dhoom3' - and the talented actor's wife Kiran Rao says she is more excited about the latter as she is clueless about the film's plot.

Aamir is playing an antagonist for the first time in 'Dhoom 3', the third instalment of the 'Dhoom' franchise that started in 2004. In the first two films, John Abraham and Hrithik Roshan played villains respectively.

Talking about 'Dhoom 3', Rao said she knows "nothing" about the film other than "a little bit about the character that Aamir is playing, so I am excited because this is the first time in seven-eight years I don't know anything about a film that Aamir is doing."

She was talking at a press conference of Anand Gandhi's film "The Ship of Theseus", which she is releasing in association with UTV Motion Pictures.

"I have always been one of the few people to hear the narrations (of Aamir's films) very early and I was like, 'At least for once let me come in as an audience and watch your film'. I want to go there, not knowing anything, be able to react as an audience, so 'Dhoom 3' is that film," Rao told reporters.

Aamir is paired with Katrina Kaif in 'Dhoom 3' that is directed by Vijay Acharya, while 'P.K.' is Raj Kumar Hirani's directorial venture, in which Aamir will be seen sharing screen space with Anushka Sharma.

The release dates of both the films are not yet confirmed.

While many of these films may not name Dawood, the characters' thick-set hairstyle, the drooping moustache and flamboyant body language make it easy to identify the stylish Mumbai don on screen.

Actors who've played Dawood earlier
Ajay Devgn in Company
Randeep Hooda in D
Emraan Hashmi in Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai

Others who've inspired multiple films

When Ranveer Singh spat on Sonakshi's face!

Bollwyood actress Sonakshi Sinha had walked out of the sets of the film 'Lootera' when her co-actor Ranveer Singh accidentally spat on her face while delivering a dialogue.

"She got so angry with me that she stormed out of the sets of the film. It has never happened to me before," Ranveer said.

Recalling the incident while shooting the film, he said, "There is a scene where I hold Sonakshi tightly and yell 'You called the police?' I was in the skin of the character at that time and so the intensity was such that spit came out each time I said the dialogue".

When the incident happened even after warnings during rehearsals, the 'Dabangg' actress walked out of the sets in a fit of rage.

The 27-year-old Ranveer admitted he had a tough time afterwards in pacifying his co-actress so that the shooting could resume.

Releasing June 5, 'Lootera' is the story of a conman played by Ranveer. Set in the 1950s in rural Bengal, the romantic drama directed by Vikramaditya Motwane is loosely based on O' Henry's short story 'The Last Leaf'.

Risks have paid off in my career: Emraan Hashmi

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 22 Juni 2013 | 21.44

Actor Emraan Hashmi who drew plaudits for his role in "Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai", says that the risks he took in his career have paid off.

"I always wanted to play versatile characters, it's just that I got slotted. I was only taking up films that were offered to me," Emraan said on the sidelines of a promotional event for the forthcoming film " Ghanchakkar".

"But when filmmakers start taking risks seeing the versatility... after seeing the turning point... the turning point in my career being 'Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai', people started thinking beyond the image... that I can do other films beyond the typical noir cinema of 2009... things really changed," said Emraan.

After a spate of films like "Murder" and "Gangster" that earned him the title of Bollywood's 'serial kisser', Hashmi received critical acclaim for portraying a variety of characters in movies like "Awarapan" (2007), "Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai" (2010), "The Dirty Picture" (2011) and "Shanghai" (2012).

Foraying into comedy with the forthcoming movie "Ghanchakkar", which releases June 28, Emraan was last seen in the unconventional flick "Ek Thi Daayan".

Calling it a "rebirth" in his career post-2009, the actor admitted that breaking through stereotypes in films like "The Dirty Picture" and "Ek Thi Daayan" have brought him success.

"There was almost a rebirth of kind in my career after 2009 and I got to do the work work I really wanted to do. In any decision, you have to be slightly cautious but but you have to take risks. Because in my career, risks have already paid off," he added.

Hema Malini's younger daughter Ahana Deol engaged

Sister Esha Deol tied the knot with businessman Bharat Takhtani in June last year, and last evening, Hema Malini and Dharmendra's youngest daughter, Ahana, got engaged to Vaibhav Vora, a Delhi businessman. The private ceremony took place at Hema Malini's residence at Juhu Scheme.

Ahana and Vaibhav, who met last year at Esha's wedding, have been in a relationship for a few months now. However, only close friends and relatives were aware about their liaison. A friend of Ahana told TOI, "After Esha's wedding last year, Ahana and Vaibhav instantly hit it off. The two were very serious about each other and sensing their commitment, both the families gave their consent within no time."

When TOI contacted the family, an elated Hema Malini said, "This is another big day in my life. Last year around the same time, Esha got married. And now, Ahana is getting ready to tie the knot. Once again, it's celebration time for us. Vaibhav is a very nice guy. We are very happy with the arrangement."

I'll be seen as a boy rather than man, says Arjun Kapoor

In his first two films, Arjun Kapoor played gun-toting characters but the actor is happy to finally get to be a regular, romantic guy on-screen in his upcoming film " 2 States".

Based on the 2009 novel of the same name by Chetan Bhagat, the film is produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions and directed by Abhishek Varman.

It is a story about two people from different states of India, who fall in love and how they convince their parents to accept them.

"I relate to the character a lot. He is a lot like me in that sense. The characters I played in 'Ishaqzaade' and 'Aurangzeb' were not regular. Guns were always around my characters. This time I have cakes and flowers around. Living the college life, working in a bank, travelling across India to woo my girl in love," Arjun told in an interview.

The actor, who plays Krish Malhotra, has cropped his hair short and will also sport light stubble to complete his look for the film.

"I am excited about the look. I will be seen as a boy rather than the man that I am perceived in front of the camera. I am wearing jeans and T-shirt, glasses, which I have not worn in my last two films. I am goofy in front of the camera. It is a lot like what I am in real life," he said.

Since the 27-year-old actor plays a Delhi boy, he was recently in the capital to shoot the third schedule of the film alongwith co-star Alia Bhatt, who plays his south Indian lady love Ananya Swaminathan. "I like shooting for '2 States' primarily because it is a Dharma film. It is all 'chakachak', clean, young but it is not a frothy rom-com. It is more realistic and that is why we came to Delhi as the book brings the story here.

"We wanted to show the whole vibe of the city through in the film. We didn't want to compromise by shifting the film to Bombay," said Arjun, who has previously shot in Gurgaon for "Aurangzeb".

When asked if he read the popular book in order to understand his character better, Arjun said, "I read the script and then I asked Abhishek if I should read the book. He asked me to avoid it as he thought I could get caught up in it. He has his point of view through the book and wanted me to bring something fresh."

'2 States' is slated to release on April 18 next year.

The actor is also busy shooting Yash Raj Films' "Gunday", which will see him opposite Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra.

Besides that, Arjun will be seen in father Boney Kapoor's production, which is the Hindi remake of hit Telegu film "Okkadu" and Homi Adajania's "Finding Fanny Fernandes". "We have finished the Kolkata schedule. We have still got some action sequences to be shot in Mumbai but we will finish 'Gunday' by July. As far as 'Finding Fanny' is concerned, we will be shooting in Goa. I will finish that and then begin dad's film opposite Sonakshi (Sinha) by the end of the year as I want to give my undivided attention to it. I am pretty much sorted till end of year," Arjun said.

Ranbir Kapoor stars in family drama

Ranbir Kapoor has been busy shooting Abhinav Kashyap's 'Besharam' with his parents in a defunct mill compound in the city. TOI spent three hours with the actor and his parents, as they went through a gamut of expressions for a crucial sequence that involved a bunch of kids as well.

Rishi and Neetu play cops in the film, and we managed to capture them in police uniform for the very first time. Ranbir was sporting a look inspired by Amitabh Bachchan in Lawaaris (including the unbuttoned shirt and a shock of chest hair).

In between the shots, Ranbir would park himself on any dusty chair and ruminate. At times, he would just pick up his phone and go for a walk. But there were also times when he would crack jokes with the team and share pictures and messages with his mother.

Interestingly, despite Ranbir's superstar status, it is his dad Rishi who calls the shots and keeps everyone on their toes. In an earlier interview to this newspaper, Ranbir had said that at home, Rishi pretty much has the last word on everything... but only because he and his mother let him do so!

The scenes had Ranbir engage with his parents in an emotional conversation and at times, fool around with the kids - almost 15 to 20 of them all aged seven to eight years or so.

With the children involved in several shots, we found Ranbir helping them whenever they looked lost or didn't know what exactly to do. As for the scenes between Rishi and Neetu, Abhinav would ask Rishi if they had got the perfect shot, sometimes walking across to Kapoor Sr and telling him what he thought was amiss.

Coming to Ranbir, after every shot, he would pull a hood over his head and look into the camera in his unmistakable style. In his final shot, Ranbir delivered a moist-eyed dialogue. It was a perfect take that had Abhinav grinning quietly.

And then the climax was filmed - a hard core action sequence choreographed by action director Shyam Kaushal. Apparently, Abhinav is very happy to be able to work with the Kapoor clan in his first ever production. The film has Javed Jaffrey in a negative role and the music has been scored by Lalit Pandit. Most of the songs have already been shot with Pallavi Sharda and Ranbir Kapoor.

Nawazuddin's family caught in Uttarakhand weather havoc

Nawazuddin Siddiqui has been lately worried sick. His extended family is caught in the devastating deluge of Uttarakhand, and the Bollywood actor has been struggling hard to stay connected with them.

"I have three brothers and a sister in Dehradun. It's hard get in touch. But so far they are safe. This kind of natural fury and devastation are unknown in our parts," says Nawaz who spent all his growing up years in Uttarakhand.

The Uttarakhand capital Dehradun is some 340 km from the national capital Delhi.

"My family being there is one thing. So many locals, pilgrims, tourists and travellers being stranded is very disturbing," says the actor who is deeply pained by the devastation, destruction and deaths caused by nature's fury, and thinking of ways to help the people of the state.

"There wasn't even a cinema hall where I grew up. Our entire family lived in a state of uncomplicated simplicity. Although we were a poor family, the place holds wonderful memories for me. It pains me to hear and see so much havoc being created by nature in my beautiful homeland. I think we're paying for our sins of economical devastation," says Nawaz.

The actor is currently trying to finish the dubbing for Buddhadeb Dasgupta's "Anwar Ka Ajab Kissa".

Nearly 600 people have been killed, while thousands remain stranded in Uttarakhand. The state saw over 60 hours of continuous and heavy rains coupled with few incidents of cloudbursts at various locations June 14-17, which led to the flooding in Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers and triggered landslides at many places.

Rishi Kapoor likes to intimidate people: Nikhil Advani

Veteran actor Rishi Kapoor, who would be seen in yet another negative role in Nikhil Advani's 'D-DAY', likes to challenge himself and intimidate people, says the filmmaker.

Kapoor, who ruled hearts in 80s as a romantic hero, has of late played a variety of roles including that of a strict family head in 'Patiala House', a villain in 'Agneepath', a college dean in 'Student of the Year' and an ageing bachelor sporting tattoos in 'Chashme Buddoor'.

The 60-year-old is taking his second inning in films, as a challenge. "He is like put me in a situation or take me out of situations and challenge me," Advani said.

Kapoor took everyone by surprise and won acclaim for playing a baddie Rauf Lala in 'Agneepath'. This helped Advani to convince him for yet another role with grey shades, modelled on underworld don - Dawood Ibrahim.

"When I met Rishiji first and discussed the role, he was like are you mad, I am not doing it. We did a look test, not to convince me, but him. He got convinced and decided to play this role," Advani said.

The trailer of D-Day shows Kapoor with a wig in suits, silk kurtas, sporting aviators and a moustache.

Advani insists that his film is not inspired by any real-life incident or person.

"Our film is fictional. One might feel it is based or inspired from someone or the other but it is not. The film does draw inspiration from our history," Advani said. Advani previously directed Kapoor in 'Patiala House' and the director says he shares a good relation with him.

"It was not intimidating for me to work with him but it was for others. He likes to intimidate people. I share a wonderful relation with him. I did two films with him. He knows what I am doing. We enjoy each other's company," Advani said.

'D Day' features Rishi Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Irrfan Khan, Shruti Haasan and Huma Qureshi in lead roles. The action-thriller releases on July 19.

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 21 Juni 2013 | 21.44

The song, in English and Tamil, is from Dhanush's south movie '3' and talks about the heartbreak of a boy. It became an instant rage online and inspired many parodies soon after its release.

Dhanush, 29, however, finds it hard to move beyond the song.

"It is just annoying after a point. I don't want to sing that song anymore. It has started haunting me and I just want to stay away from it. Everywhere I go people associate me with it, I want to get away from it," he told .

The actor is all set to make his Bollywood debut with Hindi film 'Raanjhanaa' where he plays a Banarasi boy opposite Sonam Kapoor. Directed by Anand L Rai, the movie also stars Abhay Deol.

Kareena oblivious to a snake on her film set

While it's obvious of a film's cast and crew to be aware of a reptile on the set, Kareena Kapoor remained oblivious to a snake that slithered into the studio where she was shooting Gori Tere Pyaar Mein.

So much so that she didn't even care to know what the commotion was about, preferring to sit in a corner with her feet resting on another chair. Strange, since there were a few hundred people at the shoot and they were running all over the place for fear of being attacked by the snake.

It was only when her hairstylist Pompi showed her a picture of the snake on his mobile that Bebo freaked out and screamed. Only to be told, that there was no point in her screaming so late because the snake had been driven out.

After that, throughout the day, director Punit Malhotra was trying to scare everyone at the location, telling them that the snake was under their chair. But Kareena wasn't amused by his sense of humour.

I can never compete with Aamir: Kiran Rao

Having a star actor-filmmaker like Aamir Khan as her husband doesn't give Kiran Rao reason enough to either cast him in a movie or compete with him at the box office. The 'Dhobi Ghat' director will be content if "different kinds" of movies can co-exist with the "changing" star system in filmdom.

"I don't think I will ever be able to give competition to Aamir. Different kinds of films don't need to compete," Kiran, who had teamed up with Aamir in her directorial debut, told IANS.

Aamir is known as one of the biggest commercial stars in tinsel town, with blockbusters like Taare Zameen Par, Ghajini and 3 Idiots to his credit. He is popular as the man with a Midas touch and this was evident when he presented non-commercial comic satire Peepli Live, which emerged as a major commercial hit of 2010.

Kiran, who has Aamir's constant support, isn't too much into calculating the box-office figures, but believes that when "some films earn Rs.100 crore, it's good for small films like ours (mine), because it strengthens the industry and more money comes in."

She doesn't feel her movies and Aamir's films are "necessarily competitive".

"I only hope that everybody continues to make different kinds of films," added the filmmaker, who is inclined towards non-commercial and offbeat scripts.

She is glad the star system in the Hindi film industry is changing.

She feels that it will still take time, but "(now) people don't necessarily go (to cinemas) because there is a star in the film. I don't think the star system, which existed 15 to 20 years ago, still exists."

After working with Aamir, one of Bollywood's top four Khans - the others being Shah Rukh, Salman and Saif - in Dhobi Ghat, does she plan to cast him in a commercial project in the near future?

"I don't," she replied promptly, adding: "Because I do cinema that excites me. I don't even watch many huge films. I don't go to the cinema every weekend. I watch selective cinema and want to make my kind of films. I don't judge cinema on its box-office success.

"I would never make a film because I think it's going to be a box-office success. I don't know if I have it in me to make a Dhoom or Dabangg. But never say never, I can't say no, but it's unlikely."

Incidentally, Aamir stars as the antagonist in Dhoom 3!

Kiran and Aamir married in 2005. Together they raise a son named Azad, born through a surrogate mother.

These days, Kiran is busy promoting Anand Gandhi's Ship Of Theseus, which she is presenting. A critically acclaimed film at international film festivals, Ship of Theseus is releasing on July 19.

The movie is about human values and features three characters - an experimental photographer, an ailing intellectual monk and a stock broker.

She admitted a film like Ship of Theseus is not for the box office. "It's so small, such an unusual, challenging film to make. You would not be able to compare it with a commercial film."

"The box office in an arthouse film is always going to be small. We have to face this and overcome this. So, we overcome that by keeping the marketing cost low," she added.

Kiran didn't deny that movies which click at film festivals don't necessarily mint money well at the box office. She says "it's not a myth".

"Films that go to festivals are made with a different style and different cinematic language, which often the mainstream audience is not used to," she said.

Red Chillies office turns into a fortress, thanks to Hrithik

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 20 Juni 2013 | 21.44

Hrithik Roshan is honing his super powers in utmost secrecy. The VFX editing for his next ambitious venture 'Krrish 3' is underway at the Red Chillies office in Khar and the place has been converted into a fortress of sorts.

It is one of the most expensive films of the year and the details of the project have been a closely guarded secret. So much so, the gossip columns have not yet got a whiff of what is going on behind the closed door of the studios. Even in the post-production stage, every precaution is been taken to keep it that way until it is time to divulge more. To ensure this, an entire floor has been cordoned off for the project.

A source from the film unit told TOI, "If any one wants to access the floor in Hrithik's absence, he has to take permission from the actor. A call goes from the office to Hrithik and only when he gives a nod, the person is granted admission." Both Hrithik and RakeshRoshan frequent the office to supervise the goings-on.

The source added, " Only those people who are required for the editing are authorised to be in the premises. The floor is out-of-bounds for other members of the staff. SRK has given strict orders to everyone to follow Duggu's instructions regarding this."

Roshan Sr is also not leaving any stone unturned to ensure maximum security. "There is absolutely no way information can leak out from behind the iron curtains," the source said. When contacted, RakeshRoshan said: "Hrithik and I have made it mandatory that no outsider is allowed on that particular floor. Red Chillies has a very professional set-up and is a fantastic place to work."

Guru Dutt's family threatens legal action against his biopic makers

The other day, we reported how late Guru Dutt's family members had raised serious objection to the making of a biopic based on his life and times by National Award-winning filmmaker, Bhavna Talwar, and her husband and producer of 'Mausam' and 'Rann', Sheetal Talwar.

Guru Dutt's son Arun, and his niece and acclaimed filmmaker, Kalpana Lajmi, had come out in strong protest about the Talwars not informing them or taking due permission from them for the film.

This not with standing, Sheetal had justified the couple's going ahead with the script saying: "There is a clear law that a celebrity's life can be put on celluloid from whatever information is up on the public domain. We will adhere to that. We will definitely go to Guru Dutt's family members, but only once the script is ready."

An angry Arun had shot back, "Whatever is in the public domain about my father is not entirely correct. It will be a big mistake on Bhavna's part to blindly believe that material." Lajmi too had seconded Arun saying, "While I think Bhavna is a fine filmmaker, she will have to be extra careful in doing her research. We, the family members of Dutt, are still alive. It is always a sensitive issue when you are making a biopic on a person who is not around anymore to defend himself. Also, I am a bit apprehensive about Bhavna trusting material available in the public domain."

The latest is Arun and Lajmi have decided they will take legal action against Bhavna and Sheetal in the event they take the biopic on floors without showing them the complete script. When contacted, Lajmi confirmed the news. To this, Sheetal simply said, "India is a free country. I believe in the courts. I love the courts. If we get a court order saying that we have to show them (Arun and Lajmi) the script, we will."

I need stars to better sell my film: Vikramaditya Motwane

Ahead of the release of 'Lootera', director Vikramaditya Motwane explains how casting mainstream actors does not necessarily make him a commercial filmmaker:

You assisted Sanjay Leela Bhansali in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas. How much of his style of filmmaking has influenced your direction?
I owe everything that I have learnt about filmmaking to Sanjay Leela Bhansali. His style is unique and majestic and that idea of cinematic celebration has stayed with me throughout. But I don't try to emulate him. I'd like to carve a unique identity of myself, and tell a story in my own narrative style. No filmmaker can be a clone of someone else.

Lootera is an adaptation of O Henry's The Last Leaf. How different is adapting a piece of literature from writing your own script?
It's easy and difficult in equal measure. I read The Last Leaf on the recommendation of a friend. It's a four-page story, which I instantly knew could be adapted into a film. Novels are much more difficult to adapt. But here, we had to do a lot of rewriting and had to work on a strong structure so we didn't miss out on the finer nuances.

How did Ekta come on board as producer? Is she creatively involved as well?
Ekta was always in touch with the Phantom Productions' (Anurag Kashyap's production house) team. One day, she called to ask what we were up to, and Vikas (Bahl) told her we were planning to start our own production house. At the time, she said she wanted to be part of whatever we were doing. She's been very supportive; creatively and otherwise. I'm a director who takes everybody's inputs. So it has been a fairly collaborative attempt.

Have you changed as a filmmaker in the past two years?
After Udaan, there was a lot of pressure to deliver another great film. So when Lootera came about, it was a relief. I've grown up with Lootera. I've changed drastically in these two years, more than I ever did before.

You made Udaan with a TV actor Ronit Roy whereas Lootera has mainstream actors. Is that purely a commercial decision?
It is. Eventually, you want your film to be seen by the largest audience possible. Stars help in facilitating that. Stars work. But they are actors before they are stars. They'd do any script that excites them. Casting them doesn't make a commercial filmmaker as the content is to speak for that, not who is delivering it. However, I won't deny I need stars to better sell my film.

Are you scared that despite starting with a film that had an art-house appeal, you will get stuck with formulaic films?
Not at all. It didn't happen with Vishal Bhardwaj, Dibakar Banerjee or Anurag Kashyap. Neither with me. I haven't changed just because now, I am in a position to cast big stars in my film. Tomorrow if I have a script that doesn't need big names, I will still go ahead and make it. It is my vision, my decision.

There were similarities between the trailer of Udaan and Where the Wild Things are. And now, the music of Lootera's number, Shikayatein, is similar to the title song of One Day. Why does this keep happening?
With Udaan's trailer, I accept the goof-up. We were lazy and I take full responsibility. But the similarities between Lootera's music and One Day is purely coincidental. It happens all the time where art is concerned. I know it, and the music director, Amit Trivedi, knows it. He's not stupid to lift that track. As long as we both know this, I don't care what the world thinks.

A fortnight before the release of Lootera, what's your mental space like?
I'm nervous, but I can't do anything about it. I still have to finish the technical bits - sound mixing and all that. Also, we are trying to promote the film as extensively as possible. Rest is up to the audience.

Bollywood and its people have been kind: Ali Zafar

Pakistani actor-singer Ali Zafar, who has acted in Bollywood films like 'Chashme Buddoor', 'Mere Brother Ki Dulhan' and 'London Paris New York', says the industry has been very kind to him.

"Bollywood and its people have been very kind, loving and welcoming. I am happy that my work is getting appreciated. I am delighted to work with good directors and actors," Ali told .

He believes that an actor should be flexible and versatile and not remain stuck in groove.

"I want to do different kind of roles. For me the script of the film is very important, followed by who is backing it. Today, marketing the film in right way is also very important," Ali said, adding that he is devoted to his work.

Ali has been roped in for Yash Raj Films (YRF) latest venture 'Kill Dil', being directed by Shaad Ali of 'Saathiya' fame opposite actors Ranveer Singh and Parineeti Chopra in lead roles.

The actor says he will be seen in a rugged avatar in the upcoming movie. After 'Mere Brother Ki Dulhan', this is his second film YRF.

Ali's other project is 'Aman Ki Asha' also starring Yami Gautam of 'Vicky Donor' fame. He is all praise for his co-star.

"Yami is a delight to work with. She is a fabulous actress. In reality, she is a simple girl," the 33-year-old added.

I don't like being compared with Rajnikanth: Dhanush

Tamil actor Dhanush, who is awaiting the release of his first Hindi film "Raanjhanaa", says even though superstar Rajnikanth has a lot of influence on him, he doesn't like being compared with his father-in-law because he considers him a "legend".

"I grew up watching his films and therefore there might be his influence on me, but I don't like to be compared with him," Dhanush told IANS in an interview.

"He is a legend and I'm only 26 films old. How can you possibly compare me with him," he asked.

Director Anand L. Rai has transformed the southern star into a typical desi guy from Benaras for "Raanjhanaa". But for Dhanush, character was no different from playing a lover boy in a Tamil film.

"It was just another film for me. After hearing the script, I realised that the character was very similar to the lover boy I have played in several Tamil films. I knew I had to play a lover boy again, but in a different place and language and, therefore, I had nothing to worry about," said the actor, who has teamed up with Sonam Kapoor in the love story.

"Anand wouldn't have offered me the project in the first place had he not believed in me. The faith factor touched me and I was convinced that I had to do the project," he added.

"Raanjhanaa" is the love story of a Muslim girl and a Hindu boy and this is Dhanush's first full-length romantic film.

Does he think his fans will accept him in a romantic hero's role?

"I'm not a judge of my films and I don't know how my fans in Tamil Nadu will react to 'Raanjhanaa'. We have dubbed the film in Tamil hoping it will impress my fans, but I don't know if I can assure you they will like it. I hope they do and I'm waiting to see how they will receive it," said the 30-year old actor.

Produced by Eros International, "Raanjhanaa" is coming out Friday, while its Tamil version "Ambikapathy" will hit the screens a week later.

For Dhanush, working in Bollywood is almost similar to doing movies in the Tamil film industry. The only difference he can point out is the exhausting promos.

"In the south, we usually give a bunch of interviews and we are done, but in Bollywood, promotions are really exhausting. We travelled to nearly 15 cities to promote 'Raanjhanaa', but down south, seldom do we go to other cities to promote our films. This is the only difference I find between the two industries," he said.

He however admitted language was his biggest barrier while doing "Raanjhanaa".

"I almost gave up dubbing because learning Hindi was a Herculean task. But Anand and Sonam never gave up on me and I'm thankful to them. I still haven't mastered the language and I think I will take more time," the actor added.

How did a Tamil actor end up in Bollywood?

"Anand watched my National Award winning Tamil film 'Aadukalam' and decided to cast me. Even though I was sceptical initially, the faith that Anand had in me eventually led me to sign the project," he said.

Dhanush has also signed another film with Anand and says it was out of mutual respect for each other.

"You can't always expect to work with a director who guarantees success. Anand and I have developed mutual respect for each other. Precisely this is why I have teamed up with him even before the release of my Hindi debut," he explained.

Aamir could have harmed 'Ship of Theseus': Kiran Rao

Filmmaker Kiran Rao took marketing tips from Aamir Khan for Anand Gandhi's 'Ship of Theseus' but she feels bringing her husband on board officially would have harmed the film's prospects.

Impressed by its unusual content and storyline, Kiran decided to lend her name to the upcoming film and will be presenting it.

"His (Aamir) coming on board would have harmed the film because Aamir comes with a huge audience and expectations. So when Aamir says watch this film, lot of people will turn up. But this is a different film. So they may feel disappointed," Kiran told in an interview.

The film will have an initial 30 screens release in five cities. If the response is good then Kiran says they will increase distribution.

'Ship of Theseus', which has travelled to international festivals like Toronto and Dubai, explores life's complexities through the stories of a blind photographer, an ailing monk fighting for justice and an enterprising stockbroker.

"I was not intending to present a film. Anand and I got along well I asked him if I could be of any help to him. It is a small film he is a first time filmmaker. I feel it is important to support each other when we make different kind of films," said Kiran, who debuted as a director with her off-beat film 'Dhobi Ghat' in 2010.

Kiran feels it is important to have a known name attached to the film.

"I think when you make something that is non-mainstream and people don't have automatic way of consuming, like you don't have a big star, or a hit song or marketing money then you need to find some way to make audience aware of your film."

Kiran has come up with a unique strategy to promote the film as she would be promoting it online and not on TV.
"I don't think we are taking a risk by promoting it this way. This film is for a very niche audience. Digital platform suit these kind of films. Traditional audience for this film would be festival going people, who watch world cinema, people who love art house and new kind of cinema and we are tapping them," she said.

Mahesh Bhatt contemplated casting Suraj Pancholi for 'Aashiqui 2'

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 19 Juni 2013 | 21.44

Not many know that before Aditya Roy Kapur was roped in for 'Aashiqui 2', Mahesh Bhatt had met Suraj Pancholi, and he was among the few names considered for the main lead for this love story. But then, the filmmaker was looking for a soft face.

Says Bhatt, "Suraj was there on our radar. He definitely has a strong presence. He has a lot of his father in him. But I needed some one vulnerable and endearing, hence I opted for Aditya." So will Bhatt consider casting Suraj in the future? "As of now I don't have anything in mind, but we keep launching new faces," he said.

Sana Khan gets anticipatory bail, starts shooting

Sana Khan has finally got a breather. Her anticipatory bail application has been accepted. The actress, set to make her Hindi film debut in the Salman Khan starrer 'Mental', is charged with attempted abduction' of a 15-year-old girl. Talking to TOI on Tuesday, an evidently shaken Sana said, "I don't want to revisit the nightmare that was the last month. I had done no wrong and I was being implicated."

Sana has been accused of plotting the abduction of a teenage girl who had spurned a marriage proposal from her cousin Naved. But the actress vehemently rejects the charge levelled against her saying, "Am I mad to try and abduct somebody? Getting a 15-year-old married could give me life imprisonment. Nobody in my family has had a love marriage till date, forget eloping. I have got such a great opportunity to kick-start my career in Bollywood with a film starring Salman Khan. Am I stupid to throw it all for such a thing? "

So what exactly happened that pushed the girl's family to lodge an FIR against her? Regaining her composure, Sana says, "Since you insist, I will tell you exactly how it all started. But before that I want to clarify that I am not on the run. But yes, I had disconnected my phone for few days around that time. Too many people were calling up and had no intention to talk about this to every Tom, Dick and Harry. If I wanted to speak, I knew whom to call."

Sana says, "I am not someone who interferes in the love life of others. I am not a matchmaker running a marriage bureau. I met Naved's 'friend' at Sion. She told me that her mom wanted to meet me. Which is why I went to her Navi Mumbai residence. The next thing I knew, they had filed a police complaint against me!"

According to Sana, the girl's family is implicating her to get media attention at her expense. "What else could be the reason? Why are people so harsh on actors? I have been going through this since my modelling days, but now I don't care. I just want to stay away from such needless controversies," says Sana, who has had her fair share of them: In March 2007, Sana's TV commercial for a men's underwear brand had created an uproar and consequently it was banned on grounds of obscenity. However, the company re-hired Sana, shot another commercial for the same brand in February 2008. Then came her linkup with Salman—rumours were doing the rounds that she was Salman's favourite in the Bigg Boss house in the 6th edition of the reality show. And the latest was she being a much-married woman, which she denies.

Meanwhile, Naved has been given clear instructions by Sana to cut off all ties with the girl in question. "Tomorrow they might accuse us of much graver sins," she says.

Ranbir’s a detached guy

Ranbir Kapoor likes to live life in a bit of isolation. The actor says he has always been a little detached as far as emotions are concerned. "That is my personality. A film's success or failure doesn't affect me. Once the film is done, it's out of my system. I don't feel attached to it. So I've never felt success or failure. My first film was a disaster, but nobody saw me depressed about it. I am happy in my space," he says.

He further adds, "I keep quiet on sets for hours together and people assume I am in deep thought. I have this constant white noise in my head. I'm not thinking anything, my mind is just blank. This keeps me calm and focused. This is just how I am."

Ranbir's mom Neetu further confirmed saying, "Emotions such as anger and happiness are missing from my son; at times this bothers me."

Shraddha to work with 'younger' Siddharth not 'veteran' Bachchan Jr

She may have been labelled fickle at the beginning of her career but Shraddha Kapoor is displaying wisdom beyond her years post 'Aashiqui 2'.

It was the other day that the actress turned down an old contract for a music video saying she was now a star and too big a brand to honour such commitments. And now, we hear, she has chosen Villain directed by Mohit Suri over Umesh Shukla's next starring Abhishek Bachchan.

Sources close to the actress claim she prefers to be paired with relative newcomers like Siddharth Malhotra in Mohit's film over a 'senior' actor like Abhishek Bachchan in Umesh's project.

A source told TOI: "She selected two scripts from the many she had been reading. She went through both Mohit and Umesh's scripts and felt the former's held better scope for her to flex her acting muscles."

But it wasn't just the script that proved to be the clincher. Shraddha told her close friends that she was not too keen to be seen with 'veteran' actors who have been around for ages.

Said the source: "She doesn't want to tread the same path as other actresses. Even when she was lying low, she had decided she wanted to do meatier, performance-oriented roles. With Abhishek, there was very little scope to perform. Her aim is to work with the Varun Dhawans, Ayushmann Khurranas and Ranbir Kapoors of the film industry."

While Shraddha remained unavailable for comment, a friend of the actress rubbished any such implications saying, "She has no problems working with anyone." Really?

After 28 years, a 3D avatar for Sholay

The 3D version of the 1975 superhit 'Sholay' is all set to hit the theatres. A source revealed that over 150 technicians had painstakingly worked for over a year for the new avatar and there were plans to hold screening for the veterans Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra.

"The poster design is unique too, showing Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan on their favourite bike wearing 3D specs. There are other innovative ideas being worked upon the publicity design too.

The purpose of converting Sholay in 3D is to let the current generation know what a classic it was and why its success could never be matched," said the source.

Scared to approach Delhi girls: Pulkit Samrat

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 18 Juni 2013 | 21.44

The four boys of Fukrey - Pulkit Samrat, Ali Fazal, Manjot Singh and Varun Sharma - share their Dilli gyaan with Times of India.

Delhi foodies' tales
During the shooting of the movie, the four guys took a lot of time out and hung around different places in the city. "It was basically all about exploring some cool places every day and trying to trump the masti of the previous day," says Varun. They especially remember their momo outings, where they had the trademark tandoori momos of North Campus. We ask them to pick out their one favourite place to eat out at. Ali says, "Paranthe Wali Gali at 6am in the morning - best breakfast ever and probably the heaviest too." Pulkit says, "Darshan at Bangla Saheb Gurudwara, especially for the kadha prasad offered there. Main toh baar-baar line mein laga hoon prasad khaane ke liye and I am sure aisa sab karte hain." Varun says, "Pandara Road pe bahut hi heavy khaana and uske baad wahin ki kulfi." Manjot adds, "Mere liye toh CP ka khana. Wahaan khade hoke rajma chawal, kadhi chawal khana. They're out of this world."

Getting the Delhi accent right is not easy
Manjot and Pulkit proudly call themselves Delhi boys. Varun belongs to Jalandhar, and is well versed with the Delhi lingo, thanks to his frequent weekend trips to the city. But even then, the boys maintain, getting the Delhi accent right wasn't as easy as they assumed. Pulkit says, "It seems like bahut easy tha kyunki film Delhi ki hai, ladke yahaan ke hain, toh language koi zyada difficult nahi hai. But we have specifically targeted east Delhi ki language which is very different. So for us, it was still difficult because even the way people greet each other there is very different. We managed simply by following Mrigh (the director) completely." But for Ali, it was the other way round. He had to unlearn the fukra lingo because of his character. "Mrigh actually wanted me to sound neutral. I am the eldest in the group and I am already in college in the movie. But because I was with the three of them all the time, meri language full Dilli ki ho gayi thi, kyunki yeh teeno bilkul kattar Dilli wale hain.

Har ladke ka sapna hota hai Miranda mein ghusna
The introduction song and most of the college sequences of the film were shot in Miranda House, and the boys just couldn't get over being 'legally allowed inside Miranda'. Varun says, "I think the Miranda experience was the most fun. It was right in the beginning of the shooting schedule and it was just so exciting for us to be there." Manjot adds, "I haven't really attended a college. My education was through correspondence. So all my regret about not attending college ended after this shoot because har ladke ka sapna hota hai Miranda mein ghusna. Log sadak ke baahar baithte hain, deewaron se jhankte hain, but hum toh legally andar allowed thay." Ali says, "When we were at Miranda, we knew exactly how big a deal that was for us and for every guy."

Scared to approach Delhi girls
In the movie, Pulkit sends a 'fraandship request' to Priya (Anand) on a kite. While there he does it like a pro, the guys admit that this attitude is only for the movies and that they are too scared to approach a Delhi girl on their own. Having grown up in the city, Pulkit says, "I am toh very scared about approaching a Delhi girl. Unka khauff hi alag hota hai. Even if maybe I know the girl, main darr se approach nahi karta because agar woh known na ho toh seedha thapad hi pad jaayega yahaan. Baad mein woh jaan pehchaan ki nikle aur main unse naa milun toh alag sunne ko milta hai ki itna attitude wagerah wagerah." Ali adds, "The thapad is too much for me. I am a shy guy and I'm not good at approaching girls. If you approach someone, they give you the look which says, 'How could you look at me?'"

Pampering the bholi princess
A part from all their wacky Delhi experiences, the four are more than willing to talk about working with Richa Chadda in this movie. Varun says, "Every scene that we shot with her was so much fun. Woh pura Bholi Punjaban wala keher har scene mein daalti thi woh and mazza aata tha har shot mein. But off screen, she is extremely sweet." Pulkit adds, "We called her the Bholi Princess off screen. All of us really enjoyed pampering her and we actually treated her like a princess." Richa says, "I had the most fun with these guys. Itni pampering mili mujhe. Koi mere liye gaa raha hota tha, koi kuch aur. We had a blast throughout the shoot and even during the promotions."

Is Jiah Khan's suicide letter fake?

Ever since Jiah Khan committed suicide, and Suraj Pancholi landed in the eye of a storm, a bitter battle has erupted between the two aggrieved mothers. On one hand, Rabia Khan has been gathering evidence to build a strong case against the Pancholi family, on the other, Suraj's mother, Zarina Wahab, has been fighting tooth and nail to insulate her son from surging public outrage.

And now, TOI has obtained copies of Jiah's 'last letter' and a set of five love letters that she wrote to Suraj during their ill-fated affair. The findings seem to suggest that the handwritings do not match.

Check out: What Jiah Khan wrote to Suraj Pancholi

A senior police officer (on request of anonymity) from Juhu Police Station said, "If you look at the letters which were at Jiah and Suraj's house, you get a feeling that something is definitely not all right. However, it will be wrong to say anything emphatically until we get a confirmation from forensic experts."

To solve the mystery of the mismatched handwriting, cops have now asked for answer sheets and bank forms filled by the late actor.

When contacted, Zarina said, "Yes, I am aware that the handwritings look different in the two sets. I think Rabia did not account for the fact that her daughter wrote love letters to my son. She was living under the impression that she only called and texted him. The truth will be out very soon."

Also see: Jiah Khan's life in pics

Added Zarina, "I have faith in God. Once forensic experts say emphatically that the letter, which Rabia handed over to the police, was not written by Jiah, I shall take legal action against that woman. But let me add that I shall consult my lawyers in detail before taking any step. I shall not do anything undignified and unjustified."

On the other hand, when TOI contacted Rabia, she did not take the call. Jiah's sister Kavita responded, saying, "My sister is unwell. She can't talk. The cops who claim that the handwritings have not matched, have not notified us. We maintain that none other than Jiah wrote the letter, which they have collected from our house. Nobody knows Jiah's handwriting better than us. It would be silly to imagine that we would stoop so low so as to fix something like to deal with our angst."

Priyanka gets emotional on the set

Exactly a week after her father's demise, Priyanka Chopra started filming her next, at a studio in Goregaon (West).

The actress placed a picture of the late Dr Ashok Chopra, in his army uniform, at the mahurat puja. She was accompanied by her mother, Dr Madhu Chopra, and a few close family members.

Priyanka got emotional, but regained composure when her mother comforted her. Incidentally, June 17 was also her mother's birthday. After the puja, the actress, clad in a blue jersey and red shorts, began shooting the film with a boxing ring scene, fighting a US boxer.

Initially, PC was to train under Lucia Rijker, who had trained Hilary Swank in the Hollywood film, Million Dollar Baby. But as she was unwell, Christy Halbert, Team USA's assistant coach, was roped in.

Meera to promote 'Bhadaas', keen to clear court mess

Pakistani actress Meera wants to sort out issues with "Bhadaas" producer-director Ajay Yadav who had reportedly filed a case of non-cooperation against her when she refused to dub for the psychological thriller. Keen to kiss and make up, she is here for the film's promotion.

"There was some misunderstanding and I had informed the director earlier that I can't be here in May as I had other commitments. I want to solve the court issues and want to stay away from it," Meera, who made her Bollywood debut with Soni Razdan's 2005 movie "Nazar", told IANS.

Produced under the banner of Serene Films, "Bhadaas" has Meera in the lead role and it also features Aryeman Ramse, Ahsutosh Kaushik, Shree Rajput, Ananth Mahadevan, Rudra Kaushish, Mohini Neelkanth and Mushtaq Khan.

"It was only date issues and nothing more than that. I spoke to him over phone and said let's sort this out and I am here for the promotions," she informed.

She says she was "a bit sad" when "I got to know that in my absence, the dubbing was done by someone else. I respect the Indian law and order and I have requested Ajay to take the case back," she added.

Reportedly, Yadav has agreed to take the case back. The film is coming out June 28.

Randeep Hooda buys a Polo team

Randeep Hooda's love for horses is well known and the busy actor currently owns five of them. But now the actor is adding a whole team of studs to his stable.

"I have bought a polo team and we will be playing when the Indian Polo season begins later this year. We'll be playing post October in Jaipur, Delhi and other places in India," says Randeep.

"I am planning to name the team Royal Roosters, as it has a royal and naughty touch and the sport can do with some fun," he says. Asked about this unusual purchase, the actor says, "Some people buy properties, others precious jewellery, but I have put my money in things I love."

Randeep will need 20-24 horses for the team and will bring in professional players from India and abroad. "They will be stationed in Jaipur. When I get time off from my movie commitments, I can practise and might then be able to play in the team too. I am clear that I won't go on the field without practice or else I will make a fool of myself," he says.

The actor is not new to the sport though. "I had given polo a back seat and taken up show jumping. This probably is the first time that Bollywood and polo have come together in real life. I hope that helps to take the sport to the next level," he says.

While other sports are almost like religion in India, Randeep hopes to popularize polo. "Contrary to the royal and uptight image of polo, I want to bring it to a younger generation. This is a great sport that can have a larger audience and appeal to more people. Sportsmanship is lacking in many other sports that I don't want to name. I am teaming up with the Royal India Polo Company and they are helping me in taking calls for the team. I will be looking at major corporate and private individuals for sponsorship too," he says.

I’m blessed with an expressive face: Sonakshi Sinha

Sonakshi Sinha is in two minds if she likes being labelled a lucky mascot. "It's a tag that has been given to me by the media and it's temporary," she says, adding, "Luckily however, my efforts have not been undermined. Also, at the end of the day, I don't think being called a lucky mascot is a negative thing. No one is saying, 'Sona can't act,' are they?"

She may have a point there. But she is also making heads turn with her subtle '50s look in her upcoming film Lootera, which the 26-year-old credits to the film's research unit headed by director Vikramaditya Motwane. "A lot of research has gone into the film, not just the yesteryear look but the entire set, locations, costumes - attention was paid to the smallest detail," she says. A lot work has also been put into her expressions, she says.

"There are several scenes in Lootera, especially romantic ones, where a lot had to be said through my eyes," says the actress, who proudly credits her good genes for what she says is the blessing of an 'expressive face'.

Sonakshi claims there were enough and more people who tried to dissuade her from taking up the role in which she plays a Bengal zamindar's daughter deeply in love with a man who has his secrets.

"Usually when I read a script, I imagine someone else playing the character, but not in this one," says the actress. "When Vikramaditya narrated the story to me, I could only imagine myself playing Pakhi (the female lead). I fell in love with the character and when more and more people started doubting my decision, I took it as a challenge, ab toh karke rahungi."

What has also been a talking point in Lootera is her simmering chemistry with Ranveer Singh. The usually rambunctious actor is seen indulging his quieter side and according to reports, Sona's calm presence did act like a perfect foil to his uninhibited exuberance. Ask Sonakshi about their 'yin-yang' energies and she laughs. "Opposite energies not withstanding, it has come out rather well on screen," she says before sounding serious again. "Ranveer had to calm down a lot during the film in keeping with the demands of his character. Initially, I did have some doubts about how we would look on the screen but I think it looks magical now.

What helped Sonakshi retain her composure during the demanding shooting schedule that stretched from the interiors of Bengal to the Himalayas, was a disciplined unit. "It was the most sorted set I know, where people avoided talking as the shoot was sync sound, proper timings for breakfast and lunch, and so on. Usually, you have an hour after one shot is over and the next is getting readied. But it was different on the sets of Lootera and this helps you to concentrate on your work," she says.
